Imagine the finale this would have been had we won at Old Trafford.

New ball or not new ball?

I think he'll wait until Woakes is done then take it with Jimmy and Broad.

If he leaves it too long and they have a partnership the fear that they score quicker with a new ball kicks in.

Just goes to show why scoring 380 plus in the final innings to win a Test Match is very rarely achieved.

Whatever happens now, this series has still got us all gripped in the final session of the final day.

It really feels like a draw would be the right result for the series. It’s been nip and tuck all the way. Great series.

Definitely a fair result but I reckon we'll be thinking what might have been more than the Aussies.

In years gone by you'd be confident Jimmy would be brought on to finish the Aussies off. Not any more unfortunately as the runs to win are uncomfortably reducing quickly

What better ending to a career can you have than taking the final wicket to win a test and draw the ashes. Really hope it happens for Broad, he deserves it.

Sorry but it is relevant for a few reasons
A day 4 pitch is way better than day 5. The time available means the batters don’t have to take risks to get the runs. England are a bowler short ( 2 if you count Stokes). Australia have 4 of the top batters in the World. I am not seeing what will change to make things easier for England. 104-0 as I type
They still only need to plod on at 2 per over.

Last ball faced in test cricket hit for 6 , last bowl in test cricket a wicket. That will never be repeated. Better script than Botham

Brilliant. Such a shame that an over generous declaration, an unsporting run out and the weather robbed England of winning the ashes.

What an unbelievable series…. Test cricket still the best. You can stick all the franchise stuff, only test matches get the emotions going to that level.

Only other player to hit his last ball in Test cricket for 6 was Wayne Daniel.

Incidentally Glenn McGrath took wickets with his last ball in Tests, ODIs & T20s!

With how wet July has been, I'm surprised we managed to complete 4 out of the 5 tests! Always a mountain to climb after losing the first 2 but fitting for Broad in this test to shine for one last time. He'll be sorely missed. Silver lining that they still haven't "lost" The Ashes on English soil since 2001.

Good knock by the Aussie's to get close to that total.

Very poetic way to end, first with Broad but then with it being Bairstow catching Carey.

England had a bit of luck with the weather this Test. The rain yesterday when Kwahja and Warner looked well set and England looked flat definitely helped us.

Woakes well deserved player of the series for us

19 wickets in three tests at 18.15 is bloody brilliant - only 4 behind Starc who took 23 in all 5!

Glad to see him finally recognised like this

Good effort having only played 2.5 games.

And don't forget his runs, seeing us home at Headingley and the first innings in this game.

An incredible Ashes series, after which both teams can be proud of their amazing performances. That really was test match cricket at its best with both teams giving their absolute all. I do think that the controversial stumping of Bairstow by Carey was a changing point in the game: until that point Australia were in the box seat, but the incident seemed to galvanise the English team to spur them for the remainder of the series.

Funnily some posters have said that this incident cost us the second test. We'll never know but my feeling is that Stokes' rampage was a result of this and I'm with you in thinking it kicked us into life more than it cost us that game.
