Not a penalty at all. Barely any contact, not enough to go down and if still unsure, check to see if the diving players are are splayed out as far in front of him as physically possible!
I, personally try to put my arms out to protect myself when I fall down, not to add effect to sailing through the air!!

What Iceland have achieved in recent years is off the scale.
Population: 334,000. Not much more than Leicester or Coventry.
Staggering.
I'm proud that one of their team is a Claret.

All the laws of the game say is "If, in the opinion of the referee".Tall Paul wrote:All of those things are defined in the Laws of the Game.
For example, what is deliberate handball?
No-one can say exactly what it is. That's the problem, likewise a foul. And when is a player interfering with play with regards to offside?
That's why there is nothing in the laws of the game which can define what they are.

Re: World cup thread
var and the fuss surrounding it is already a distraction.
technology should be used only in absolute incidents like whether a ball crossed a line or off side.
using it for contentious issues like fouls or handballs is ridiculous, especially when the replays are in slow motion.
another example of fifa justifying their massive wages by implementing terrible ideas.

Seems like it's defined to me.HANDLING THE BALL
Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm.
The following must be considered:
the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence
The offside law also clearly defines when a player becomes involved in active play:
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

Re: World cup thread
VAR is only used for goals, red cards, penalty decisions and cases of mistaken identity.
I think that's pretty limited. Do people think that it's being used for all tight offside decisions or all possible handballs, or something?

they are clearly different.Tall Paul wrote:Seems like it's defined to me.
The offside law also clearly defines when a player becomes involved in active play:
the word 'deliberate' is open to a subjective interpretation by a fallible human referee whereas you are either offside or you aren't.
and charlie, a penalty can result from a contentious 'handball'.
Re: World cup thread
Tall Paul wrote:Seems like it's defined to me.
"the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand) "
Can you tell me if it's a penalty if the player slips on the floor but his hand goes towards the ball, like in today's game - Argentina v Iceland first half?
"the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)"
So can you tell me at what distance a referee should give a penalty?
Where is the definition in that, other than in the opinion of the referee?

I'd hope so. I've not been overly impressed with Uruguay, France or Argentina so far. It's probably a case of them still warming up but maybe they're not as strong as we think. I don't think we'll be as organised as Iceland but we could certainly take a leaf out of their book.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Absolutely. May give england a bit of confidence too after seeing that.
