So the chief execs of failing trusts shouldn't be held responsible for people dying needlessly in their hospitals?joey13 wrote:It's run by the government, the name of the thread is a give away .

I felt the same when my (now ex) wife spent 7-8 months being shunted around various hospitals whilst they tried to work out what was wrong with her.
We even went to Sheffield from Burnley to see one specialist.
Watching her in crippled over in pain whilst the doctors struggled to work it out.
One doctor nearly got a twatting from me when he tried to make out she was lying about then pain.
Looked very sodding sheepish when he was doing the rounds on a ward and found out she'd ended up having a hysterectomy at 29 yrs old.
Couldn't even look us in the face...
That was during the end of labours time in charge and the start of the Tories.

Re: Jeremy Hunt
Sid, you mention being ok with an insurance based model, personally I'm not mate.
Healthcare is different to motoring or your house. Bad drivers are usually punished with higher premiums, and if you get burgled your house insurance goes up. What if you are unfortunate to have a lifelong illness - with an insurance model you'd be punished for being ill, and it is that what I find unacceptable.
I also believe that we already pay a premium in the form of National Insurance payments and income tax - the problem is that not enough is ringfenced for the NHS, and that is combined with mismanagement too.
I used to work for the NHS and the waste of budgets is extreme because of the budgetary restraints placed on the trusts. The waste comes when money is allocated for projects and not spent, and in order not to lose the money or future budgets the money was wasted on tech etc - one year I was instructed to buy over 100 laptops because we had Orders spend the cash. 4 years later we disposed of over 100 laptops without them being taken out of the boxes - it is this that is criminal.

I'm vaguely recalling the NHS wasting billions on a computing system that didn't work properly and was then binned off without being fixed?Rick_Muller wrote:Sid, you mention being ok with an insurance based model, personally I'm not mate.

You can only ring fence so much money before someone has to start thinking its the management that's at fault.
As for long term illnesses, I don't know what the answer would be there personally.

Re: Jeremy Hunt
I've checked and a project started by labour cost £10 billion or so and was scrapped in 2010/11 as a failure and never worked....

Re: Jeremy Hunt
thats part of the issue Sid - it is criminal that so much has been wasted through poor management. The argument that one party is better than the other doesn't really wash for me - both sides have been bad for different reasons. If only we could get the investment that Labour put in with the ruthless business approach of the Tories we would be onto a winner. Trouble is we have mismanagement with investment or lack of investment with better management no party seems to be able to get it right.Sidney1st wrote:I've checked and a project started by labour cost £10 billion or so and was scrapped in 2010/11 as a failure and never worked....

That's why it needs cross party control.Rick_Muller wrote:thats part of the issue Sid - it is criminal that so much has been wasted through poor management. Re: Jeremy Hunt
As a recent patient or Customer of the NHS, I can offer nothing but praise for those who work at the coalface and that includes the consultants. It's the senior management that is causing the over and underspends.
The answer clearly is huge reform of the NHS, including structure, funding systems and technology, but how do you re-create it, without causing serious issues to those who need it at the present time? The only option would to recreate it as a skeleton next to the current shambles and move people in as it is built. No politician will allow that as it may not be completed until they aren't in government anymore.
It's all politiks, innit.

That's one of the main issues, they'd rather play political football with it instead of joining up to fix it together.

"American health system". No such thing. The number of morbidly obese people in America is truly incredible. They even have a TV series about it. The doctor in charge weighs a good 20 stone himself.

The American health system is really the "Doctor Get Rich System".
