Barnes, most wasteful?
Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
Me and my Dad joke that if the ball is in the air and Barnes is under it then it will end in a free kick to them or us.
I have an annoying habit of wanting Barnes to be on if Vokes is, and wanting Vokes to be on if Barnes is.

We have more chance of winning at Swansea with Vokes in the side.
Even if just to take advantage of Bradys corner kicks.

Barnes and Gray up top for me every week
Don't write Vokes off FFS, he does hold play up well and scores very good goals with his head. All our forwards are good and useful in their own ways. Keep the faith; in all the lads.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
I think Barnes has been terrific this season for us, and he's probably a better foil for Gray than Vokes. For a player in his come back from a cruciate, he's had a phenomenal season.
But I do think his method has begun to be less effective in the last 3-4 games. To some extent, he's a marked man now, and his strategies for winning free kicks (which are a little dubious, it must be said) have been ignored by an increasing number of referees, whilst his clumsiness and propensity to try and engage his opposite number in a wrestle has resulted in a greater number of free kicks against him.
Ideally, we will upgrade in the second striker position in the summer to someone who is a little bit more subtle and, in particular, is far more able to play the sort of slide-rule passes that Gray thrives upon (one element of Vokes' game where he's a far better foil for Gray than Barnes). That will help us get the best out of Gray, who remains by far our most potent weapon. But it will also avoid the very real risk that teams and referees really get the better of Barnes next season, dramatically reduce his effectiveness, and thereby make us very one dimensional.
That isn't to say Barnes' days are numbered - they absolutely aren't, and he'll be a crucial alternative to that new, more sophisticated second striker or indeed for Gray - as will Vokes.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
barnes just seems really thick. his first three contributions to the game on saturday were three of the most obvious fouls you'll ever see so its no wonder his card gets marked.
he serves a purpose and i think he's actually a decent enough player when he concentrates on playing.

Amazing goal.
But 1 goal v 5 games of previous stats doesn't change anything.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
He just cannot help fouling opponents which stops so many attacks it's getting beyond a joke.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
After the high of scoring a goal he took on quite a few chances himself and spunked them all. Which is why his stats look like they do.

Scored a brilliant goal and caused havoc.

Ref was absolutely desperate to penalise Barnes whenever he could. He caused them some problems today and that's why he's favoured ahead of Vokes. Decent goal as well

Played a key role today, even excluding his goal he was the focal point of our attack.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
We're far better with him rather than Vokes alongside Gray. Especially away. he was close with the shot that skimmed over though. Shame the final chance didn't fall to him

BBC Sport gave him man of the match.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
Played well yesterday, puts himself about a bit, grabs the odd goal and must be a nightmare to play against. Has some skill though and is a fitter, faster foil for Gray than Vokes. Not sure that his constant moaning at refs gets him anywhere but is an important member of our side.

Is this the same Barnes that is our second highest Premier League scorer and before the end of the season will become our number one scorer...I love Barnes he tries!

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
I bumped this thread because I feel Barnes has taken a bit of unfair criticism lately. I think he's vital to how we play and we look a lot better with him up front than Vokes. It's true, Barnes get himself into trouble at times but I feel this is outweighed by his positive contributions. He puts himself about which causes no end of problems for the opposition. He's also shown to have some quality with some good link-up play and some good goals too. He won't ever be a huge goalscorer for us but we don't need him to be when the goals are shared out across the team. I felt he was unfairly treated by the ref yesterday who was desperate to penalise him for anything and everything. Sport is physical and football is a contact sport but while we were being punished, Liverpool weren't.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
I was never previously a Barnes ahead of Vokes fan in the time they've both been here. However, he's clearly more effective than Vokes in occupying oppos defenders, and that takes them out of the game leaving our midfield/defensive units less to think about. in our current system he's a starter for me over Vokes.
The issue with our forwards is
- we don't play to Vokes' strength of heading the ball from crossed balls
- we don't play to Gray's strength of pace by playing accurate balls through channels
- so it''s left to Barnes to rough-house it to provide some level of percentage-based outcomes

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
I like Barnes, I always feel more confident that when he's starting the centre backs will be in for a tough time. He's not the quickest but even at his age (27) its still not too late for him to learn from the past masters of how to win those aerial balls without constantly fouling. Referees are getting wise to his antics. He has to be smarter.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
Typical Barnes game.
Two official OPTA 'Big chances missed'
One shot from outside the box, saved.
2/12 forward passes successful.
More arials duels lost than won.
Whilst rolling round looking for a foul Sunderland break and get a chance their best chance.
But he'll score one after 3 more games like this so it's ok...
If you want to defend his effort bring some stats not platitudes eg: 'he get's about', 'looks a handful'.

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
Fair point about chances misses today because he should have scored at least 1. However I think we struggled for a bit after he went off.
Regardless of whether you th8nk he is wasteful or not we look far more of a threat with him in the side rathrr than Vokes

Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
whereas gray and vokes are clearly setting the team alight with all their goals ?????
Re: Barnes, most wasteful?
Vokes typically wastes plenty of chances. Simple tap ins and headers from a few yards out.
