Hassys cinema was the Empire, at the top of Deardengate. It used to be a laundry before it became a cinema. There also used to be a Palace cinema in Beaconsfield St., but that was before my time although my Dad used to tell me about it.minnieclaret wrote:Was the former bingo hall opposite Rockys new fire stn previously a cinema?
Hassys became a bingo hall before a store.

Rosegrove cabaret club had some fine acts in their time and then had gambling upstairs. Roulette I think.
It later converted to a two screen cinema.

The two in Padiham-
The Grand Theatre has become flats, knocked down and rebuilt.
The former Globe works is now a kick boxing club I think after having a brief spell as a Chinese restaurant in the 'All quiet on the Preston front' series.

Re: Cinemas that no longer exist.
When it was announced that the Empire was closing, me and my mate who were schoolkids, were interviewed by the local paper (Rossendale Free Press??) about what we thought about the closure. "It's a poor do" was my profound and eloquent reply, quoted in the paperminnieclaret wrote:The Empire I couldn't remember, went often enough and me old man lived there when it went to bingo.

Re: Cinemas that no longer exist.
I found this info from a 2014 Bly Express article. It refers to the number of cinemas in Burnley in 1941 being 15, and lists their locations.
Interestingly the Royal on Robinson St became a Munitions Factory in 1941, and did not re-open as a theatre unti l1950.
"The cinemas were divided between those located in the town centre and those that served local communities. In 1941 the split was seven in the town centre (the Empire, Grand Super, Odeon, Palace, Savoy, Temperance Hall and Victoria) and eight elsewhere. These latter were, the Alhambra (Trafalgar Street), the Coliseum (Gannow Lane), the Empress (Sandygate), the Imperial (Redruth Street), the Kings (Thorn Street, off Hebrew Road), the Pentridge (Holmes Street), the Royal (Robinson Street) and the Tivoli (Colne Road)."

Re: Cinemas that no longer exist.
I could not believe these two shots I found of the Empire, which still exists and were taken only last year. It took me a little longer to work out where the Empire is. I know now
