In Rammy we had the choice of three Saturday night sports papers. The Sports Pink, The Football Pink (Manchester) & The Buff (Bolton)
An interesting think about the Buff. If you went to Gigg Lane to watch Bury back in the 70's & early 80's, they use to always kick off at 3:15 on Saturdays. The Bolton Evening News had an old coach with a printing machine in the back. This was parked just outside the exits at the Cemetery end of the ground. So when the game finished the paper was ready for sale with the results hastily printed in the "stop press" on the back page.
I was also scorer for Rammy cc in the 70's and 80's and spent many an afternoon with Jimmy Mac in the score box. Happy days.

Memories. Reading the reports of the games, when a goal was scored the name of the scorer was printed in CAPITAL LETTERS.
McIlroy crossed the ball for POINTER to head Burnley's third goal.

In 1958 i was a paper boy and had to be at the shop for 5pm,the van would just be delivering the Last Sports, but they came out that fast, if there was a late goal, on the back page there was a blank space, and they called it the Stop Press, and the last minute goal was put there with the Goal scorer. Perhaps the papers were being delivered while the players were still in the bath..Mayoclaret wrote:As a child it intrigued me just how quickly it was printed - in fact it still does!!??

Interesting that about the Bolton Evening News's mobile stop press printing machine. In Burnley this was housed in Dugdale Street, the back street that runs parallel with Manchester Road, between Red Lion Street and Grimshaw Street. The Manny Road frontage used to house the old 'Lancashire Daily Telegraph' office. Many of the Sports Pink pages were prepared and 'pre-printed' during the week previous, with only front and back and certain other pages printed on the day. the almost-completed paper would be printed in Blackburn and then vanned to Dugdale Street, where the small stop press machine, on which the last-minute type could be set up by the guys there, quite laboriously complete that day's paper. Incidentally, the Lancashire Telegraph building in Blackburn, purpose-built in the early 80s, is up for sale and the few remaining staff are moving/have moved into the former Rovers club shop in the town centre!!

Hells bells, I didn't know that. Still it won't make much difference to the current staff. Most of them have only been there five minutes (in relative terms). The long standing ones have all been eased out and crapped on by the current owners to save on costs.
