What a day! i didnt even get into the ground until near half time, had to be escorted round the pitch as the first half was being played, we were then seated in the home end.

Re: 25 years ago - We went to York in our thousands
Casper was a coach, Mullen a Manager. Jimmy's problem, as i witnessed first hand a couple of years after this game was the bottle. That was why he lost a lot of respect from players. Pre kick off i smashed a half bottle of whisky at the entrance to the players tunnel. I got loads of stick from Parky, Marlon and Steve Davis as they were stood there. Main comments were that Jimmy would be out with a straw if i didn't get it cleared up. Also Clive Middlesmass asked me not to put whisky in the ref's room as it ends up in the same place, pointing at Jimmy's room.
All that aside, i dealt with him nearly every home game and i can't say a bad word about him.

feels more than 25 years for me
As someone said earlier the parking was a nightmare.
Not sure if it's my favorite away game though. Top 5 for sure, but Stockport Wembley, and Derby with the long chant beat it for me

Special mention for John Deary almost throttling Dean Kieley after our equaliser!
Bet he instantly regretted kicking Robbie Painter whilst Deary was in the vicinity

What actually was the away attendance?
We're the ones in the home areas counted, because I'm sure
There must have been quite a few.

I don't think you ever got away attendances recorded then but you wouldn't need to knock too many off the full attendanceElectroClaret wrote:What actually was the away attendance?

What a night. As an impressionable ten year old, like others have said, I will never forget that night. The sights, the sounds, the smell. It seemed like the fence buckled at full time as everyone clambered to get on to the pitch. Grown men crying and kissing the ground. Residents peering out of their windows at the thousands celebrating as we left the ground and the procession of cars, with folk hanging out of the windows, beeping all the way home.
I really enjoyed Charlton last year and Stockport at Wembley ( I felt sick with nerves vs Sheff Utd) but this remains my favourite away game.

We sat in their home stand and believe me we were not on our own amongst Burnley fans.

Re: 25 years ago - We went to York in our thousands
Arguably the best season I've had as a Claret.
Every week wondering how many goals we would win by.
The trip to the premier league in 09 was beyond my wildest dreams but it came as a last minute surprise. 25 years ago it always felt like it would happen so you could enjoy every game.
What an amazing journey our club had been on.

Cant believe that.ClaretTony wrote:It's an interesting one - the fans loved him at the time but it was Frank Casper the players had great respect for, not Jimmy Mullen.

Re: 25 years ago - We went to York in our thousands
It was an amazing night. I was there about 6.30 I think and parked up after driving from Oxford. I ambled to the ground and spoke to a bobby, asking him how many Clarets they were expecting. I think he said 3,000. His jaw dropped when I told him what had just happened a few days earlier at Carlisle and got straight on his radio. Not many minutes later, outside the ground, another bobby told me I'd best go in as it was full. Some fantastic away days & nights following the Clarets in them days but I wouldn't swap them for where we are now.

Re: 25 years ago - We went to York in our thousands
I had travelled on my own that night from Holmfirth.
The rest of the family had not travelled from Accrington.
So 'Billy no mates' was on his own.
I can see myself on the video on my own on the pitch at the end, just crying!
I was crying because I was remembering the Orient Game 5 years earlier, and in
disbelief at how far we had come in those 5-years. Wembley the year after, then the
play-offs and the aeroplane and now we had something to be really proud of.
Little did I know what the next 20-years would bring.
As for the crowd, wasn't the official attendance around 9,500, of which
say 7,500 from Burnley? It seemed to be pretty much 3 sides of the ground anyhow.
Well done to the Police that night. Yes the ladder incident was like watching a pre-match
entertainment sketch, just like the silent movies.

When people moan that we get beat by Man U etc, take a look at where York are today.
Hoping results go their way to avoid dropping to Div 6.
