I doubt you watch much football as regardless of being 2 years older he is a much better player than Boyd. Also he allows the framework to change more due being able play anywhere across the midfield or up frontablueclaret wrote:The framework looking even more rigid, and before long rusty.

The chances get greater the older you are, for me the money could have been spent more wisely finding a long -term solution rather than a quick fix.
Stoke have twice done us, hopefully it will be third time lucky.

I'm also noticing other posters assuming we will stick with 4-4-2 this coming season, even though Dyche didn't for the whole of last season.

Look at Marney, the older you get the harder to recover from injury.

Yes, we know you'd rather sign a Scottish lad who's done very little for a couple of years over in Portugal.ablueclaret wrote:The chances get greater the older you are, for me the money could have been spent more wisely finding a long -term solution rather than a quick fix.

£2-3 million for a player who fits in our wage structure and has spent the last 7yrs in the PL making nearly 230 league appearances is a small gamble.
You could at least do what a lot of us are willing to do and give him a decent chance.
He could well help us see games out where we are only a goal in front.

Yes Jay Rod is back, McCann played again after injury, Ings may well do, the younger you are the easier to recover.
I don't buy into Walters signing. because it reeks of that stolid framework.
We need some exciting players with pace and skill and a future, Taylor gives us. that, and that is the template that we should be working from.
I hope Walters is successful, but for me it doesn't cut the mustard.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
I'm sure he will be deployed wide most of the time and that allows Dyche to be more flexible in his substitutions as instead of a like for like replacement in attack he can stick a wide man on and put Walters up top if he sees fit.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
I'm not saying he shouldn't be supported as a player, just that for me it's the wrong option.
I realise people see him as a short term fix who can keep us up for another season, perhaps they will be proved right, but for me we should have bigger aims, we should be looking for players to take us to the next level, for me Walters is a defensive signing, and that isn't the direction I want to see this club head.
As a club survival has become the mantra, for me it is a recipe for failure.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
Quite a shrewd signing I think, and I hope he'll allow us to play 4-5-1 more often as he'd really suit one of those wide positions. Hitting diagonals up to him could be a useful tactic when we're under pressure.
He looks like a very fit lad too, pretty much a standard ready-made Dyche player.

Ings - has stated this week he doesn't know when he will be fit.
Jay Rod - still has to recover his pre injury form but he was out a long time.
Why doesn't Walters cut the mustard for you?
Masses of experience, fits in the wage structure, has proven he's a fighter, helped a team establish itself in the PL, passed the medical, he's cheap.
So come on, lets hear your list of reasons why you don't rate him.
Or is it you'll struggle to complain about him compared to a kid who's done little in Portugal?
We all know you'd be the first to nail the Scottish lad and the club to a cross if we signed him and he was gash.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
I have never nailed the club for signing young players.
I have said we are pretty inept when it comes to signing from the continent, the evidence proves my point.
When it comes to Walters who is a decent player no doubt I just see it as a negative move by a club looking at survival rather than kicking on.
I appreciate you and others think differently but for me it's bright young players we need with something to prove.
Yes Walters is an SD sort of player and I'm sure he'll get the best out of him, but for me at least I was hoping SD might just see the need to progress.
This signing makes me realise we are in for more of the same, fine by you I know, but I'm looking for something better.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
So you don't want experienced players to sign for us?
You'd rather we signed inexperienced players who could ultimately end up costing us survival if they made an error?
Ok, glad we cleared that up.
Yet the main reason we survived was down to a nice mix of experienced PL players and younger less experienced ones...
Barton, Marney, Lowton, Heaton, Mee, Boyd.
Mixed in with Keane, Gray, Hendrick, Vokes etc.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
We have enough experience already in this squad what we need is dynamism, Taylor provides that, Walters to my eyes does not.
As a rule of thumb I'd make 28 the maximum age for signing a player, unless that player was to become the fulcrum of the side, was a free transfer, was an exceptional player or allowed you to play a wholly different game plan.
The only one of those Walters might fit is the last but I fancy he has been bought to keep the fame work just as it is.
About this signing we will have to disagree. I hope he does well despite my misgivings.

Ahhhhh we got him , sorry so far behind today it's only now that i can sit down and read the this thread .
Jon will do a very good job , he is such a great pro and the thing that he wanted to come to Burnley speaks for its'self .
Trust me we will all fall in love him , he is a grafter and will prove his doubters wrong .
See him in Dublin next week .

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
Nice bit of flair for his opening goal vs the Clarets at Stoke last season. A few of those will do well.
For me Walters big asset win be holding on to the ball deep in the opposition half to bring us up the field more. Something we do not really have at the moment.

Great idea to pluck an arbitrary figure out of the air and use it as a maximum age limit for any potential signing. Rather than look at it with "misgivings", why can't you just for once in your
miserable, negative life-view, see that it might, just MIGHT be what the
squad/ team needs? As I say, rather than automatically pouring cold water
on proceedings, just embrace it. Once. Just once.

Unfortunately for Ablueclaret the last 50 years in football seem to have passed him by. The days when you could bring in teenagers like Taffy and Dave Thomas with "flair" straight into the first team from the youth system are long gone. Sad but true.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets sign Stoke favourite Walters
Ablue, We need to be in this league a couple more years begore we start spending big on flair players. You say we've signed Walters for a quick fix. Could it also not be said we've signed him to consolidate another season in this league. You might recall our youth and training facilities have only just been upgraded. We've moved up a catogory and now playing competitive games at that level. It's going to take a couple of years for that to produce the "conveyer belt" you crave. So a player like Walters in my opinion is here to help keep our status.

A few people gave some good answers to this then Ablue took the thread away on his own tangent but I'm really interested to see where people enthused by this signing see him slotting in and where they think this leaves Vokes and BarnesDevils_Advocate wrote:Seen an awful lot of enthusiasm for what seems a very meh signing to me so with that in mind what do people see as the role Walters will fulfil?
Will he replace Boyd in a 4-4-2' do you expect him to be starting ahead of Vokes and Barnes, will he partner one of them or is he just a squad man and third or fourth choice striker?
I think in Barnes and Vokes we have two very hard working players with fantastic attitudes and team ethic but who are not quite up to being a first choice premier league striker. My concern is that Walters is exactly the same and we end up with three great third choice strikers good for the bench but lacking in real quality up top if Dyche perseveres with his favoured 4-4-2

Presumably they did a similar medical on Defour. It would be interesting to know the outcome of that.
