The Beatles "she's leaving home" by Billy Bragg is an all out annihilation of a truelly classic ballad.

He should have been shot for crimes to music.

If you can watch that till the end, you deserve a medal.

Heart- Stairway To Heaven. In front of Led Zep. Now that takes balls.
It does. But when you have a voice like Ann Wilson.....

Plant had a tear running down his cheek.

The latter resolves so nicely.

Dan Valerys version of You don't know where your interests lie beats 5 and a penny's version hands down. It is also miles better than Paul Simons original.

The Jam's version of David Watts too, is my preference.
Same answer every time this comes round. Two Cheshire Clarets in agreement; The Slits - Heard it through the grapevine. "I heard it through the bass line"

As for bad covers, anything that UB40 murdered from the Trojan catalogue and other reggae classics they ruined. Cod reggae as per The Poluce. Yeuch.

If you're going to do reggae covers, put your own spin on the covers as per great cover versions by The Clash;

Armagideon Time - Willie Williams
Revolution Rock - Danny Ray
Police and Thieves - Junior Murvin
Pressure Drop - Toots & Maytals
Wrong em boyo - The Rulers

And their version of Bobby Fuller Fours' "I fought the law"

If you're going to do ANY covers put your own spin on them, but not like Tori Amos who has slowed down and emo-pianised everything. No one is ever, ever going to say Jackson's original is better than this, Nico took it and made a legend out of this song. https://youtu.be/0_z_UEuEMAo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Been waiting for post 58.

Best cover ever, "I fought the law" by the clash. Sonny Curtis wrote and first performed it, Bobby fuller four covered it also.

Honourable mentions to cash for hurt, nirvana for man who sold the world, Kirsty for New England, David gray for say hello, wave goodbye, SLF for johnny was (only live mind you) Springsteen and tom morellos cover of springsteens own ghost of tom joad, ferry for jealous guy (sacrilege you cry, but ur wrong. It's just better) disturbed for sound of silence. Great covers all, and nearly all even better than originals imho.

Worst cover is a bigger ask. Some proper dross spewed out over the years.

The 4ad folks always seem to do very sensitive covers. Brendan Perry's I must have been blind and TMCs Kangaroo stand out, and then of course there's this https://youtu.be/4mUmdR69nbM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Agree 100%, although from the same album ("Sgt Pepper knew my father") there were some very good covers:

The Wedding Present - Getting Better
Hue and Cry - Fixing a Hole
Sonic Youth - Within You, Without You

These 2 tracks are arguably the most favoured and probably receive more airplay than any other versions of either song.
