It's this type of narrow minded ignorance in football that is all too common amongst English fans. That league is not **** poor for a start, secondly how did Leicester fare a few years ago while picking up talent in that so called **** poor league? Their best player even came from a league below! There were some people on here telling us how shite la liga was too. Unbelievable

He looks a real player on that link, scored all kinds of goals.
Last 20 minutes of a game he could be instrumental.

So they are terrible leagues? Wow. I suppose a major reason Chelsea won the title last season then wasn't down to kante. They are far from terrible leagues. I think you need to stop swallowing the sky PR propaganda about our league.

Ligue 1 isn't a poor league.
I was in Lorient today and the people I spoke to really didn't want him to go.
Incidentally, the pitch at Lorient is an absolute disgrace.

If this comes off it looks like we'll need special dispensation for a work permit as he hasn't played the required number of competitive internationals over the past two years.

I'd be hoping if we're chucking bids in we are pretty sure the permit will just follow?

There are a few English clubs watching him. This might start a bidding war.
West Ham, West Brom, Brighton, Celtic and Fulham.

I'd be staggered if we hadnt scoped this out before making a bid, and there are various reasons why we might be confident of securing a permit.

Would his previous spell in England count for anything? He must have qualified for something then, so maybe that also applies now.

Personally wouldnt bother at that price for him. Would rather if we were spending that much on someone from abroad its someone a bit more proven. Teams in those leagues (generally speaking) arent as wealthy as most clubs in England. So should be able to get much better for that money.
One player I posted that would be worth watching (also Ghanaian) Richmond Boakye is on absolute fire. Ex Juve. Averaging a goal a game and has already scored 7 Europa league qualifier goals in 6 games this summer. Not saying he is cut out for the prem but would be worth a gamble. Zvezda signed him on a free!

If Waris has a work permit in France, couldn't it follow that he gets one in England too? A bit like the Kolpak South African cricketers, who can play in England because of a German agreement with South Africa?

Pace isn`t EVERYTHING, as some people have pointed out. More importantly, does he have the ability to sit on the bench for 80 minutes?

Pace is massive for us especially in away games, the fact we have none makes us 1 dimensional. We had it last year with Gray and we saw at Palace how effective it can be - it's up to us to be more effective with it. It's essential we get someone in that is very quick

We was 1-0, had a goal disallowed and had dominated the game playing Vokes and Barnes up top at palace

But then again, with the right delivery, both against Chelsea and West Brom we are creating far more chances than we did last season, despite not having any pace in the side.

It's good to have it as an option though, isn't it. Either to start the game or as an impact sub. Such as when we were chasing a goal against West Brom.

Aboslutely not - the work permit system for footballers in this country is clearly in place. If a player requires a work permit he will have to have played a set percentage of his country's full internationals over the past two years and they will also need to be in the top section of the Fifa rankings.
No idea what the rules are in France but those in the UK are determined by the Home Office.

This is on the FA website
Required % of international matches over previous 24 months is determined by the player’s National Association’s official FIFA ranking:
FIFA 1-10: 30% and above
FIFA 11-20: 45% and above
FIFA 21-30: 60% and above
FIFA 31-50: 75% and above
Reference period reduced to 12 months for those players aged 21 or under at time of application

I've just read that Man City wanted to sign Waris when he was at Hartpury, but couldn't get a work permit.
I assume he was on a student visa previously, and going to City would have required a full work permit.
He's a lot further down the line of being a pro footballer now though, playing in a World Cup etc, so we should stand a much better chance. Not certain to be granted one though.

Ghana are ranked 50th so if he was to sign and if he did need a work permit he would have had to have played in 75% of their full internationals in the last two years.

So 22 in that period. Wonder how close he is to the 75%
Then again the 22 might not all be in the qualifying period

Ghana are ranked 50th.
He's been called up for 11 of their games in the last 2 years, and not called up for 10, including the ACN.
He's appeared in 9 of those 11 games called up for.
Based on the requirements on ClaretTony's post, he wouldn't get a work permit.

Those 22 caps have come since 2012. No idea how many in last two years or how many games they've played. It may well be that he doesn't require a work permit, I obviously don't know his circumstances.

The work permit rules are the automatic levels at which you will get one. If you fall short, you can appeal to a tribunal with the special circumstances why you should get one anyway.

I think you are looking at the old rules, not the ones brought in two years ago to tighten up the whole thing.
