I don't know what was uglier, our performance or the weather, but what wasn't in doubt was the resilience to put it all on the line, and that got us 3 points.

I thought Palace were brilliant, Mr Ajax resorted to hoofball and it worked with Benteke winning everything in the air against Tarkowski first half, who otherwise would have scored a 9 just like the excellent Mee. Palace have some fantastic attacking players and when they throw caution to the winds can seem unstoppable. What a game Townsend had.

We suffered from the usual curse of the window closing, but at least Pope did well and got a miracle save. He will be delighted with Tom's injury in a funny way, number 2 keepers know it will usually be injury that gets them their chance, now he has the chance and let's see if he can take it. Heartbreak for Tom though with Russia looming and Southgate only just having said he is close to deposing Hart.

Our 4-4-2 looked like it didn't work with this personnel, though better when Barnes came on. I think Hendrick for Vokes is the change I think could make us our best side. I thought Dyche made an error by deciding to target Palace's wobbly defence, with their attackers I thought we would have been better putting 5 across and starving them of the ball, they are hardly the type to go looking for it and frustration would have set it, instead we hoofed it up and handed them the ball back to attack us again. It worked for us but 9 out of 10 times I bet it wouldn't. The formation for Huddersfield will be interesting.

Heaton 6-He'll be a big loss. Not sure how this one will pan out.
Lowton 8.Very good at both ends of the field.
Tarkowski 8-Outstanding and immense with exception of one fault.
Mee 7
Ward 7
Gudmundsson 6-He had some good moments and given time he'll becomea key player.
Cork 9*-Brilliant
Defour 7- I'd like him to play a bit further forward in a 5 man midfield
Brady 4- Absolutely awful IMO
Vokes 4-Very ineffective today, should have been subbed before h/t and reverted to a 4-5-1
Wood 7-Did very well for a home debut and took his goal well.

Pope 7-He did well and our hopes are pinned on him for the next 3 months or so. I hope and trust he does well.
Barnes 7-If SD favours a 4-4-2 at home, I'd definitely pair Ash with Wood. We did improve in the final third after his introduction and I think he'd work well with CW.

Thought it was just me and I'd get accused of being anti-Ben Mee again. Tark did have time to clear after but should never have had it in the first place.

It was the perfect example of the kind of pass you're taught to not play when you first start kicking a ball. He had far better options down the line as well.

Heaton 6

Lowton 8

Tarkowski 9 - Really commanding 2nd half

Mee 7 - Stick to heading everything, never try and pass again.

Ward 7

Cork 9 - Swansea must have a hell of a side.

Defour 7

JBG 8 Thought it was his best game in ages after a fairly mediocre return

Brady 5 - I'm a fan of Brady but he was toss today

Wood 7 - Scores, always offside, disappears occasionally. In that sense, the perfect replacement for Gray.

Vokes - 5

Pope 8 - Did well in awful conditions. Needs to kick it further. Still gutted about Tom.

Barnes 6 - It's a unique skill set he has but you can't deny he's good at what he does.

Reminded me very much of the game v Leeds in the Championship title season run-in when we scored the only goal in the 1st minute through Arfield then spent the next 90 on the back foot.

Heaton 7 (Pope 8)
Lowton 8
Ward 7
Tarkowski 8
Mee 7
Cork 9* (our talisman is now a defensive midfielder:)
Defour 6
Gudmundsson 7
Brady 5
Wood 7
Vokes 6 (barnes 7)

It's a funny old game. We were under the cosh for long periods today but won the points. I can live with that

Heaton 7 Hope he makes a full recovery soon.
Lowton 8 Growing in confidence. Great goal line clearance 1st half.
Tarkowski 9 MOM One lapse in 1st half but he had a great battle against one of the leagues toughest forwards. Well done Tarks.
Mee 9 Arise Sir Benjamin. Battling display.
Ward 8 Another battling display in a rearguard action.
Gudmundsson 6 Did well when he was given the ball on the deck which wasn't very often.
Defour 6 Not sure if he can play in a 442.
Cork 8 Very good game.
Brady 5 Blows hot and cold. Today he was close to freezing at times.
Vokes 6 We didn't have the ball much today so it's difficult to rate Big Sam.
Wood 7 Well taken home debut goal. Plays without fear.

Pope 8 Accomplished PL debut. Great save from Benteke when one on one.

Heaton 6 - not much to do
Lowton 7 - did well
Tarkowski 7 as above
Mee 6 - did ok but struggled a little with Benteke's height imo
Ward 6
Gudmundsson 7 - beat his man a few times which we've been missing
Defour 6 - quite quiet but defensively good
Cork 9 - gelled us together today
Brady 4 - I'm a fan of Brady but he was awful today
Vokes 5 - struggled
Wood 6 - did what he could do with minimal service

Pope 7 - aside from that punch/save, he did well
Barnes 6

Dire game, and one where I thought SD would have put an extra man in midfield to stop their attacks in the 2nd half, but hey ho, 3 points is 3 points. Onwards and upwards

Agree with this, although I thought Tarks had the time to leather it rather than take a touch if I'm honest. I didn't think Mee put a foot wrong other than that either. Sure, Benteke beat him the air occasionally - you'd expect him to - but Mee is pretty good these days at making sure that even when his relatively small stature is exploited by a bigger opponent, he puts enough physical pressure on that the attacker rarely gets his own way.

I'm a big Ben Mee fan, but I thought he was poor today. Defensively fine, although Tarks was awesome, but his distribution and use of the ball was shocking.
I wouldn't normally comment, as it's all a matter of opinions, but some of the marking on here is weird.

I wouldn't go off Spice's analysis, stats on Twitter say Mee made the most errors on the Burnley team. Lawton and then Tarks were our most effective players according to the stats. Thought Cork had a very good game too.

Not convinced by the Wood &I Vokes partnership. Not enough mobility, link up or movement for the midfielders to look for. Just didn't stick. Thought Cork and Defour worked extremely hard and did their best but either the all was flying over their heads or they didn't have any real options. Swings and roundabouts from the West Brom game where we were miles the better team.

Heaton 7
Lowton 7.5 highly underrated player
Ward 7 steady
Tarkowski 7.5 getting better had Benteke
Mee 7 brave as ever but wayward passing today
Defour 7 works well and always looking to create
Cork 8 MOM great buy and aclass act
Gudmunsson 6 works hard but rare end product
Brady 5 bad day bar theodd one two with Brady
Vokes 5 poor game from the big man
Wood 7 one for the goal

Pope 7 great leg save bit nervy
Barnes 6

Thought we were generally poor /mediocre and shouldn't have sat back quite as much as we did .They had high quality players but a patchy unit. Were still growing but we have options .

The lowest mark should be given to Dyche for his tactics
Crazy playing 442
And even more crazy not changing as the game progressed
All out offensive players suffered because we were over run in midfield
As for our two forwards .... no service because we were on the back foot for 90 minutes

Heaton 7 hope he make a quick recovery
Lowton 7 improved attacking wise 2nd half
Ward 7 did well against a tough opponent
Tarkowski 8 seems to be growing game by game :)
Mee 7 Made some important blocks again
Defour 6 didn't see enough of the ball
Cork 8 pick of our midfield
Gudmunsson 6 game passed him by too often
Brady 5 worked hard though
Vokes 5 feeding on scraps
Wood 7 caught offside too often but took his one good chance what top strikers do

Pope 7 produced a crucial save when it mattered, had surprisingly little to do given Palace's possession
Barnes 7 managed to get us further up the pitch and won some useful free-kicks to relieve the pressure

Strange game almost felt like we scored too early, and then seemed unsure whether to stick or twist, important 3 points though sometimes you have to win ugly.

We played this match like their attack versus our defence for around 80 minutes, would have been a 1-4 loss to a team that could finish its chances.

Really worrying signs of stubbornness from last seasons poor performances raised their head here, almost like we learned nothing from our horrible away run in 4-4-2

We learned Wood and Vokes does not work up front at all. Hope we don't try that again!

Heaton 7

Mee 8
Tark 9
Ward 7

Heaton 6 - difficult to mark as he wasn't on the pitch long. hope he's not out for too long.
Lowton 8 - very good performance. he gets better and better this lad.
Tarkowski 9 - immense. just immense. one little moment but other than that he handled everything with ease.
Mee 6 - distribution was poor and looked to struggle physically against benteke in my opinion.
Ward 6 - given a hard time by townsend but dealt with him ok overall.
Gudmundsson 4 - did he play the second 45? he's lucky to be in the team at the moment. he's offered very little in the first 4 games and certainly doesn't work in a 442.
Defour 6 - a fairly quiet day but got his foot in a few times and used the ball as well as anyone else.
Cork 9 - brilliant again. what a signing. he's a level up from what we've had in this league previously.
Brady 4 - so hot and cold it's infuriating. gave the ball away cheaply time and time again. similar to JBG in as much as he eventually just disappeared.
Vokes 5 - struggled to know what his position was with Wood.
Wood 6 - see Vokes comments, but an extra point for a very confidently taken goal.

Pope 7 - very commanding, confident performance.
Barnes 6 - hurried and hassled etc... but we just weren't getting the ball into areas where he could really influence the game.

We were poor, but I don't think that was any one player's fault. It all came down to Dyche maintaining a formation which put us under pressure time and time again. It could have been so much easier than we made it.

Heaton 6
Lowton 6
Ward 6
Mee 7 (passing remains awful, and it's what will stop him from playing for England, but he gets the blocks in)
Tarkowski 7 (great defensively, but stop pretending you're anything but a defender. Get ******* rid of the ball)
Cork 8* (on course to win player of the year at a canter)
Gudmundsson 7 (a winger taking his man on!)
Defour 7
Vokes 5
Wood 6 (good goal, but offered little else)
Brady 6 (come on mate, you're better than that. Wasn't terrible though)

Pope 7 (kicking lets him down so much)
Barnes 7 (more effective than usual)

Heaton - 6
Lowton - 8
Tarkowski - 8*
Mee - 7
Ward - 7
Gudmundsson - 7
Defour - 7
Cork - 8
Brady - 4
Vokes - 5
Wood - 6

Pope - 7
Barnes - 6

Tarkowski MOM narrowly ahead of Lowton and Cork, great defensive effort and the clearance off the line when running towards his own goal was a particularly good bit of defending. Lowton has been very good so far this season, carrying on from where he left off. Cork is a brilliant addition, uses the ball well and helps defensively.

Brady was woeful today, he was pretty much excellent throughout August, today was not a good day for him.
A win when we deserved to lose is always a positive, needed a five man midfield, which was apparent early on but that never happened. Poor from Dyche

I'm usually a big fan of Mee but his early passing and distribution were shocking. I know he was under pressure, as were most of the side, from being hopelessly over-run by a very powerful Palace midfield but even so, he was having a mare. He did calm down as the game progressed thankfully.

Having watched a full re run I think I've been too harsh and will add one to Lowton, Tarkowski, Cork and JBG. This game could very easily have gone the other way and I doubt we would have seen scores anywhere near the levels we are seeing. We did defend well as a unit though.

An awful performance but at least we won. Really didn't understand the team selection with that formation. Playing 2 number 9s up front had predictable results. Also not convinced Defour and Cork can play as a 2. The sooner Hendrick is back the better.
