English clubs (but not Welsh) were banned from Europe and there was quite a bit of countrywide interest in the game. Merthyr had a very decent Conference side then, won 2-1 but subsequently lost 2-0 away. I'd just started work in Merthyr and this was my first visit to Penydarren Park.
Atlanta had just been relegated to Serie B but I think went on to a fairly late round in this competition and got back to Serie A pretty soon. I still remember most of the Merthyr team who I subsequently watched a fair few times + I remember Stromberg, the blond Swede who played for Atalanta at that time- he was their best player on the night.
Yep. Good team that, Gary Wager, Dai Webley, Ceri Williams, Gilo, Logger, Andy Beattie........... Wasn't that keen on the thug at right back that I can't remember his name. Did you get to watch Colin Loss later on? My favourite Martyrs player, but always on the lash.

As it happens, I've business in Tunbridge Wells tomorrow, but think I can get out in time to make it to Havant away in the FA Cup.

Got it. He was Steve Williams. Animal.

At Burnley, Keane always played at CB alongside Mee in a back 4. Koeman has played him on the right side of a back 3 and he clearly does not fit that role. Keane at CB in a back 4 is as good as they come.
Saxoman is doing his best to denigrate Keane clearly from a place of pure jealousy. But I suppose when you are used to watching players like the mighty Grant Hanley and Shane Duffy then Keane looks average at best.

Keane is absolutely sh**e without Ben Mee and a defensive team of workers around him. Posters on here were saying Keane was better than Jones and Stones  Hilarious, another overrated English player.

Keane will come good. No doubt about that. But it does show how important the 'framework' is in getting the best out of Keane, Mee and Heaton, all of whom were very rarely exposed.

Keane may well get better in time, more likely next season now. The rest of your post is exactly the point I was making.

Keane has been excellent so far for Everton apart from Atlanta and Spurs.

From what I saw of the Everton - Spurs game Keane looked very poor. I agree that he looks to be missing the organisation he had at Burnley. He is a class act and will come good.

Couple of factors to consider re Keane and Everton.
He's at a new club, new team mates and manager etc.

Everton have signed a number of players who are all trying to get used to each other and a new style of play.
Some of the new signings are also trying to adjust to English football in general.

Is Keane over rated?
Not really, just needs time to settle in like he did when he turned up at Burnley.

I saw the entire game. To say that Michael looked that he was "at sea" would have been an understatement. Safe to say that Everton doesn't play with the same structure that we do.
