So you think that people should allow the illnesses to get into their bodies so that their immune systems can build up an immunity to getting the same strain of that illness in the future?
Good idea. When will science learn!!!
Re: Flu jab
Since 2003 with my health issues I have had a flu jab every year.
It seems to work for me but I still get 'Man Flu' which this year over the last four or five days has been pretty bad with feeling sick bad headache sweating sneezing coughing etc etc

Re: Flu jab
By the way i was being sarcastic. The flu jab gives people's immune systems the ability to fight off the most common strains of the virus. And because the flu virus evolves quickly you need a flu jab every year to be able to fight off the most common strains each year.
This isn't a case of over-sanitization.

Are you among an at risk group? You can't think your immune system into being strong enough to fight the the flu virus. Just get the ******* jab. Or maybe die with your lungs full of fluid. I don't care.LoveCurryPies wrote:No, I’m not bothering. I work from home and don’t see many people most days. Like to think my body is stronger with natural defences.

Re: Flu jab
I got a letter inviting me for mine but it said U18s in brackets, as I've turned 50 this year, I just assumed it was a misprint and you were entitled to a free jab once over 50. When I got there the nurse looked a little bemused and asked me questions about asthma and the like,
all of which I don'tsuffer from and then said to me why do you get a free flu jab?
I said I don't, I've never had one but thought it was cos I'm over 50, she said that wasn't the case.
She then started examining my file and found a code that answered the question it stated I was a Coeliac, I told her I wasn't but was suspected of having wheat intolerance.
She said that wouldn't qualify me for a free jab.
I said ok
She said do you want one (a jab)
I said no
She said then why are you here
I said cos you sent me a letter
She said you can get it at Boots for a tenner
I said ok but I don't want one and if I did I'd have the free one you just offered me
She said do you want it ( a jab)
I said no
She said ok well look after yourself and don't get diabetes
I looked at her quizzically
She just smiled
I returned her smile but a little unconvincingly I think
I left
As I walked along the the corridor, I thought the cheeky mares calling me a fatty
Truth hurts

Re: Flu jab
If you have an overactive immune system, ask your doctor before having it. It can cause a flare up. I won't be having it. I'm not aware of ever having it.

Re: Flu jab
I've not had the flu but it sounds almost as bad as when my illness started. So I know exactly what you're describing. But the flu jab isn't for everybody. For some people it's not worth the risk as it can kick off a massive flare with people with ongoing illnesses.mkmel wrote:When you have real flu someone can drop a £50 note on the floor in front of you and say for you to pick it up and it is yours to keep. Re: Flu jab
This years flu jab seemed to sting a lot more than usual. If your eligible for the jab, get it, it’s protecting you and potentially those around you.
For the people that always say they get a cold or flu after the jab, it’s just a coincidence. Innoculations contain deactivated beasties and cannot bring on an infection, be it flu, measles or whatever. But that’s another urban myth that will never go away I suppose.

Re: Flu jab
Got my free flu jab at Uni for our winter (Australia) Had sore arm etc for few days after but main issue is I have had Flu/Cold symptoms twice since. Same happened to me ten years earlier when previously had it.
Would not do it again.
Reports in Oz media have also said it was only 30 to 50% effective.
A couple of nursing home lost 5 or more patients with the flu and they to had the immunisation.

That'll be because the jab only protects against the most common strains of the virus.ebby wrote:Got my free flu jab at Uni for our winter (Australia) Had sore arm etc for few days after but main issue is I have had Flu/Cold symptoms twice since. Re: Flu jab
As we are coming up to the centenary, I think it worth mentioning that the flu pandemic of 1918 / 19 killed far more people than the 5 years ofconflict of The Great War which had just ended. It's impossible to give an exact figure, but the bottom estimate is that it killed 20 million, and the top estimate over 40 million.
I'm one of those whose had it free for many years since a serious bout of pneumonia, but I no longer seem to be on the list to be contacted automatically. Both last year and this I've had to ring up and argue my case with the dreaded receptionist before she was "medically qualified" to authorise it.!

Re: Flu jab
There's certainly been more than a single study which shows this so you're not imagining it. The mind can effect the T cells (the lymphocyte fighter cells)If it be your will wrote:I'm going to annoy you here, but I came across a study in a proper peer reviewed journal once that suggested that very thing. Carefully controlled, patients with various infectious illnesses were split into 2 groups. One was given detailed information to read on how the immune system worked at the cellular level. Not only did they recover quicker subjectively, but blood markers of infection and inflammation recovered quicker, too. It appears, to a degree, you can genuinely think yourself better.
Re: Flu jab
I had flu once when I was younger, and it was so bad I tripped balls. I was laid on a sofa and could see a tidal wave coming at me from the opposite corner of the room.
I'd love to get it again.

You should have popped along to your local Asda - a fiver for the jab and no messing around with GP appointments.

You talk absolute ********. Go do some research. Also look up Spanish flu, that targeted the young and healthy and killed more people than WW1.Bin Ont Turf wrote:I was responding to the question of 'why wouldn't anyone have it (flu jab) if offered?'.
Well me for one, because there are fruit and veg (and other foods) that help to keep the immune system up.
I'll make it clear again, I'm only talking about the fit and healthy people, and not the young, the old or those who have breathing problems or other ailments that flu if caught could be very dangerous.
I'm a big believer in, you are what you eat. And if you eat a lot of shite, you'll feel shite a lot.

When the 1918 flu hit, doctors and scientists were unsure what caused it or how to treat it. Unlike today, there were no effective vaccines or antivirals, drugs that treat the flu. The first licensed flu vaccine appeared in America in the 1940s,

Re: Flu jab
How are we going with our flu jabs? Have we all had them?
NHS is paying for private sector care home workers to have flu jabs - as reported in The Times on Saturday - to help protect the care home residents and lessen the pressure on the NHS:
NHS to fund private sector flu jab drive
More than a million care home workers will be given the flu jab on the NHS after health chiefs identified an outbreak among the elderly as the biggest threat to hospitals this winter.
All NHS staff have been reminded of their duty to be vaccinated and those who opt out will be forced to explain themselves. The NHS decided for the first time that it would fund a £10 million vaccination of staff in private care homes to tackle the infection of residents, who often end up in hospital.
“In the past the independent sector has been overlooked and providers have had to foot the bill themselves, which in a climate of severe financial pressures has been difficult,” Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, the social care representative, said.
Sir Malcolm Grant, NHS England chairman, said that it was “more scared than we have ever been” about winter.
Last year’s flu jab failed to protect over-65s and a severe outbreak in Australia during the southern winter left the NHS nervous that the same strain would head to Britain. In total, 21 million people will be offered the flu jab.

Re: Flu jab
Aye, had mine a few days ago. As per last year, I got it at the local Co-op convenience store- much easier than making a docs appointment at the surgery c 2 miles away.
This is the 3rd time Ive had it and never previously noticed any side effects, Ive had slight cold symptoms this year though (maybe coincidental of course). Hopefully it'll cover whatever strain hits these shores in winter as having the flu is debilitating enough when you're young, never mind 65+

I think some people dont actually know what flu is! The amount of time people come into the office and say 'ive struggled in with flu', no you haven't you've got a cold you numpty! If you had flu you would struggle to even move!
I agree no point having one if you're fit and healthy but if you have a chronic long term health problem or are knocking on a bit you should.
They now offer flu inoculations to kids at primary school and im 50/50 on it.

What lol. So basically you're saying that you can't catch flu if you eat your 5 a day and live healthily. You know more than the government and professionals in the medical game. Maybe you should give them the wisdom of your knowledge regarding the flu virus instead of trolling forums as Nelstan and other aliases.Bin Ont Turf wrote:Stick that in your pipe.

Re: Flu jab
Depends on your circumstance. I work in the nhs, seeing many patients everyday. I'm exposed to a higher chance of catching it, on top of being short staffed, so I get one just to be sure and make it easier for the team. Don't get I'll much throughout the year as my immune system has had its battles, but the reason why the flu jab is provided is that it's far stronger than the other viral infections and it's more likely to spread.
