Re: Elise Christie..
I find some of the comments on this thread strange or Ill informed, Christie afterall is a current world champion.
Today's decision was incredible again. For whatever reason the officials seem to have taken a distinct dislike to Christie. The Korean female skater pulled the exact same manoeuvre in the quarter finals on Saturday morning in the final lap yet nothing was done to penalise her. I think it was an easy get out for the officials to give a subjective decision and disqualify Christie given she had to be carried from the arena after the race, perhaps thinking she wouldn't have been fit for the final anyway.

Re: Elise Christie..
No way would they of allowed a half fit athlete to potentially win a medal and kind of devalue the sport.
As for the relay race, the Korean team could have drove a tractor round and wouldnt be DQ. DQ in a home olympics? No chance

Wasn't a Korean disqualified in a final only a few days ago?Dyched wrote:No way would they of allowed a half fit athlete to potentially win a medal and kind of devalue the sport.

Yes - and to be fair from every camera angle it showed it should have been the Canadian who got disqualified not the Korean. When you see the judges none of them are Korean.Goobs wrote:Wasn't a Korean disqualified in a final only a few days ago?
I've come to the conclusion that essentially none of us have got a clue about the rules of these minority sports. Why would we ? We tune in every 4 years watching people we have never heard of hurtle down the ice on a tiny piece of plastic at 90 mph and all of a sudden think we are all experts !!
This country hardly has any of the facilities needed for training so these guys are mostly training and living abroad - paid for by lottery funding. Those bob sleighs are a minimum £50k it was saying on BBC - add up all the cost of trailing this gear and yourself abroad, all the coaches etc and I would not be surprised if the GB medal haul at this Olympics works out at £10 million per medal.
I know sport is bigger than just what medals you get but many of the sports at the Winter Olympics do not seem accessible to the poorer parts of society. The funding they get seems disproportionate to the benefits it brings in a country like GB where we don't have and never will have the facilities.

As far as I can make out, one of our athletes has fallen over in all three of her races.
Some true Eddie the Eagle spirit about her.
Eddie the Eagle spirit. Isn't she a world champion?
Re: Elise Christie..
Very brave today. Not seen the disqualification incident I still wouldn't understand!
I too thought it was the Canadian pushing folk about when the Korean was DQ. They must be prem league big 6 or something!
Christie is a World champ and brought interest to the games. 3 golds next time!

Re: Elise Christie..
I don't understand the rules of this sport but Christie did seem to be taking a different line to everybody else; whether trying to stay out of trouble or adjusting to her injury or just because that's what she does - I don't know. I wonder if that counted against her.
I think there is likely to be a cut in the funding for the winter games. Getting medals isn't the end in itself (and even then they're not generating loads of them). The theory is that funding > medals > participation; the last of these being the public good that justifies the public outlay of the first. If that's not happening, it will be quickly argued that it doesn't matter if we win every medal in the whole games so we should spend elsewhere.

Re: Elise Christie..
With the amount of time she spent face down in the ice maybe she should give the skeleton a go.
