When I get up in a morning I Squeeze a full lemon and drink the juice with a pint of water. I have done this for the last 2 years and my health is much better.
I know longer get acid burn as the lemon neutralise the acid in my stomach.
I also suffer from colitis and have never had any symptoms since

You become dehydrated whilst you're drinking the alcohol - because you pee out more volume than you drink. It's in realtime, it's not 'later'.

Lemon in warm water is supposed to be a great cleanser.

I did - and I then read another which completely argued the case. Had you scrolled down Google a bit further, you'd have found it. I know that drinking water even when not thirsty is beneficial, so you're wasting your time. I also know that Milk Thistle lowers liver enzymes, but go to your GP and he won't prescribe you any.

Go ahead and link it and let's consider its merits then.

My source of information is up here - its the doctors from the BBC TV series "Trust Me I'm A Doctor". They say that the sources recommending drinking when you're not thirsty are dodgy and are funded by drinks companies.

So put up your source and we can examine it on its merits.

I might do. Then again, I might not. Either way, you are one hell of a strange person.

Now... back on topic. Starting from tomorrow, who's drinking 3 litres, whether you're thirsty or not?

I'm genuinely interested.

Let's be honest - neither you nor me are experts on hydration. We don't conduct full scientific studies on the matter. We can only look at studies others have conducted and draw our own conclusions.

What draws me out here is that there is a commonly held belief amongst many people that they somehow "need to drink 8 glasses of water a day" - but as the BBC article points out - very clearly - this is not the case at all. It recommends something much, much simpler:

Drink when you are thirsty, do not drink when you are not thirsty.

Undoubtedly, it is healthy to remain well hydrated but that is not the same as over-hydrated.

Why do I care?

Because I believe that drinking too much water can be very damaging to people's health (see BBC article) and it can also be very damaging to people's wallets too.

I've known loads of people who wasted hundreds of pounds on bottled drinks in the pursuit of non-existent benefits which -as the BBC article points out- are simply not there.

Drink when you are thirsty. Do not drink when you are not thirsty.

It's so obvious when you think about it.

You're wasting your time if you're trying to convince me to only drink water when I'm thirsty. Common sense should tell you to stop trying.

I know that when I was at Uni, I drank water even when I wasn't thirsty - my skin improved, I felt better in the mornings, I felt more alert, I felt better 'in myself' ... I felt ... better.

This was not only drinking when I was thirsty - it was drinking more than that.

Therefore, think about it - you telling me that I should only drink when thirsty, isn't going to work. You're completely wasting your time.

Now THAT is obvious.

What sort of malevolent God, allows us to drink 8 pints of beer, but allows it to dehydrate us ?

When his lad had only water, he turned it into wine .

I like water too!

It's the only thing I drink most meal times. I never drink fizzy drinks. I drink water all day at work to keep hydrated - but only when I'm thirsty.

I'll be damned if I drink a single drop when I'm not thirsty. That's just plain daft.

It's like eating when you're full up. Don't do it!

Lemon juice has a pH of around 2. How does an acid neutralise acid burn? You need something alkaline. You'd be better off taking a couple of Rennies.

Why drinking water ONLY when you are thirsty is bad for you... http://www.thehealthsite.com/diseases-c ... -you-d915/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The purpose of the above link isn't to make you drink more - it's to highlight what us intelligent folk already knew - don't always believe what you read on the Internet.

You see, when you do things in life and notice the results, you know from first hand experience what has happened. If you were to eat a food and it brought you out in a rash, you'd know not to eat it again.

I know from drinking a lot of water, what the benefits are. Sure. Somebody can try and tell me to only drink it when I'm thirsty, but they're wasting their time - I know that's not true. I know that drinking more is beneficial, within reason of course.

Its clearly doing me some good because the change in colour is drastic! (I wont go into detail).

My problem is pepsi max. Whilst everyone in my office has brews ill have 4 or 5 cans in a morning alone. I can easily drink three litres a day. If I try and stop I get caffeine headaches.

But as well as my pepsi habit I will try and do three litres water a day, I recon I have done three pints so far today
Sounds like you have a Pepsi addiction! I've known people who have. I'm partial to Diet Pepsi but only allow myself to drink a can in the evening with my meal.

I don't mind water and always have a bottle on my desk which I constantly fill throughout the day. Other than that it's just infusion tea peppermint or camomile. Only one coffee allowed lunchtimes. I am amazed by how little water some of my colleagues drink with just the odd expresso which is in no way dehydrating.

I also know people who have had kidney stones due to dehydration.
For those who don't take on board enough water definitely a good idea to up your intake.

Water is good for people but it is surprising how little is needed to kill you. 3 liters good, 6 liters dead !

One thing about urinating or sweating is that it helps rid the body of some toxins - which is obviously a good thing.

Whether drinking more water and so causing you to pee more removes more toxins I don't know.

If you take on board plenty of water your pee should be straw coloured.

To weight that particular article I would like to point out that it does have a very big disclaimer at the bottom which reads as follows:

In contrast, the BBC article I posted earlier in the thread is written by qualified clinicians and as a result it doesn't need to have a medical disclaimer.

Here's another article on the same site advocating the "drink when you are thirsty" method of, shall we call it "staying hydrated"?

No, let's just simply call it drinking to stop it sounding like some kind of medical miracle.

Anyway, here's the "drink when you are thirsty" article:

http://www.thehealthsite.com/news/do-yo ... th-ag1016/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One thing this article has which the other article did not is an endorsement from a qualified clinician. In this instance it is a chap called Michael Farrell, Associate Professor at Monash University.

You can google him easily and see his credentials, which I've already done for you:

https://www.monash.edu/medicine/spahc/r ... el-farrell" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The article quotes him as saying, "If we just do what our body demands us to we’ll probably get it right – just drink according to thirst rather than an elaborate schedule."

Which is an excellent summary of what the BBC article says too.

Sorry to hear that Frank because, unless you've been advised to by a clinician, you are wasting your time and you'll peeing more often than you need.

Either way, stay in good health and all the best! :)

I have a particular condition that means I have to see a consultant every couple of months. He is a senior man at the QE in Birmingham, a large teaching hospital, and he told me I need to drink two litres per day. He said tea was OK but not as good as pure water. I try to do it but I usually only manage 1.5, and I have to get up in the night. Anyway, I think that is pretty good authority for claims about the efficacy of water drinking.

I try to do it but I usually only manage 1.5, and I have to get up in the night. Anyway, I think that is pretty good authority for claims about the efficacy of water drinking.
Do you only drink when thirsty? Or do you drink even if you aren't thirsty?

...for your particular condition, at least.

Perhaps you could ask your consultant next time you see him what his advice would be for a healthy person without any condition?

Yes, it might be just for my condition, which is multiple myeloma. I try to drink as much as possible in the morning so I can get it through me before going to bed. I try to drink as a routine and not just when thirsty. Good thread this, it's made me up my drinking already today.
