I think Darlington's the ultimate case. "The Madness of King George" Reynolds, convicted fraudster. I guess money buys respect, or so they say. But how somebody like that became chairman of the club beggars belief. Well, at least he wasn't a pornographer (speaking of West Ham). 25,000 seater stadium, for a club that seldom drew 5,000. Inlaid marble floors. It was totally beyond belief. The biggest white elephant of all time.

Darlington top of the list
When dodgily run sides like Cardiff.Leeds.Derby .QPR and Leicester were all avoiding penalties for finacial shenanigans Darlington had the book thrown at them by the Football league suffering points deductions and relegations to footballing obscurity.
But then they werent a media darling team.

The thing about Hereford, they kept their fan base, even when they were in the ninth tier.

Woodley, George Reynolds was spending money that he didn't have. A bigger stadium than Turf Moor? All if the trimmings, just like the Emirates? In a town like Darlington? Give your head a shake.

Scarborough... Whatever happened to them.

In the last 10 years Stockport have (in net terms) gone down 2 divisions (from bottom tier of the league to second level of non-league).nil_desperandum wrote:With respect, I think Stockport's fall was in the previous 2 decades, and Torquay -as you say - were always 4th tier strugglers. Their relegation to the Conference twice can't have been that unexpected.
Now, Rovers fans being 2 divisions below us and their club being 130 million in debt over a decade: that's impressive.
The previous 20 years encompassed some of the greatest successes of their history - albeit they finished up back where they started in the bottom tier of the league.

Ok. I was thinking more of the disintegration from gobby Premier league hopefuls in the mid-90s, (just missing out on the play-offs in 96 to the bottom of the 2nd division and administration in about 2009.)keith1879 wrote:In the last 10 years Stockport have (in net terms) gone down 2 divisions (from bottom tier of the league to second level of non-league).

Admittedly they didn't sink into the conference until midway through the last decade but I would think that the most painful decade for their supporters would have been that from about 97 to 2009, since that year their "big local rivals" - Burnley - were promoted to the PL whilst they entered administration.

I think Scarborough are in the hands of a supporters trust now. Their old stadium is now a Sainsbury's, but they're on their way back. I actually know a Scarborough supporter over here.

Us,
It's hard for 90% of our fans to adapt to whats happened and refuse to believe that we should be beating teams like Huddersfield, or at least scoring against them.

Actually, the old ground isn't a Sainsbury's, it's a Lidl.

It's a Lidl bit funny,
This old football ground,
It's just one of those,
That can no longer be found.
