Some sucker will take the majority of the blame, I'm guessing Bancroft and will not get picked for a year.
Smith and Warner will get little slaps on the wrist and within weeks we will have their smug faces on the telly pretending nothing ever happened.

A slim pill cost Warne a year. This must be worth 2 minimum...If there is a way back for a cheating captain. Makes you feel like you have dirt in your pocket!

The Aussies should have cleaned up their act. There were suspicions of cheating in the last Ashes series but not proven. They complain about sledging but are the worst offenders. Having strong competitive spirit is fine but some of their team are just nasty. Hope these particular ones get banned so the world of sport doesn't have to bear their rude behaviour again

The ICC should be ashamed, well actually disbanded!
A 1 match test ban is nothing short of pathetic for Smith who was complicit in the cheating.

I think the umpires/ICC are bound by the rules/sanctions in place for such an event. Whether these need beefing up is clearly a good question going forward as this was as blatant and as serious as anything so far seen. However, as stated above, I suspect the Aussies themselves will not leave it at that and a cull will be seen down the line.

The problem is that it is classed as a Level 2 offence by the ICC and their own rules state that:-
Level 2: Fine of 50% to 100% of match fee and/or ban for 1 Test or 2 ODIs.

Whether the Australian Cricket Board go further is open to conjecture because this is happening frequently these days but it isn't always caught on camera.

Interesting that this was picked up in an away match by South African cameramen. Were the cameramen on the ball in the recent home Ashes series or did they keep their shutters shut?

The rules/laws relating to sledging need tightening up.. not easy to police sledging I know.

A one match ban is a complete joke ( modernise the laws).

Aussies are pretty good cricketers generally.. any need to do this ?

In fairness they've just toughened up on sledging at all levels of the game and umpires can take immediate action against players. Some players in the local leagues might have to be careful!!!!

I remember saying this about Australians in another thread last year. When they aren't downright cheating, they are pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour as far as they can.
Mind you in this instance, if I was going to cheat in this way, I don't think I would have chosen to use hi-vis yellow tape to do it.

There’s been a huge backlash over here about it. I think the Aussie public are waking up to the fact that their beloved team who insist on playing ‘an aggressive brand of cricket that doesn’t cross the line’ have indeed been crossing the line in several ways for many years. Warner and Smith are certainly odious individuals and Lehmann should be sacked too. I think we’ll see huge changes over the next few months. Smith will lose his job, no doubt about that.

On the Sky Sports debate show, following on from the NZ v England highlights programme, Luke Wright stated that ball tampering was taking place in every County match that he played in last season. Before every game he suggested that a player was earmarked to go out and buy the Murray Mints. Whether you are artificially trying to put a shine on the ball or using a substance to rough up the surface it is still ball tampering. Because there is not the scrutiny of TV cameras at county matches players are able to get away with a lot more which is why umpires are continually inspecting and changing the ball during matches.

Good on South Africa for taking Aussie intimidation tactics, turning them up to 11 and forcing them back down Aussie throats.

Stuart Broad makes a good point. They were reverse swinging the ball successfully in the Ashes and in the first two tests in SA. So if it was going so well why would they change their approach now and start cheating?

They clearly cheated the Ashes; and all this 'we play aggressive cricket but don't overstep the mark' b*!*ocks they've been trotting out over the last two years now looks rather silly. Idiots.

I've never met an Australian I didn't like but on the sports field they are animals and I can't abide them. Pushing and overstepping the boundaries far too regularly for my liking.

Looks like Warner has been tampering with the ball for a while, did the bowlers not notice their sudden ability to get reverse swing with a relatively new ball (20 or 30 overs old) and on flat wickets, what did they put it down to? Newly developed skills?

I played a game back in the 1980's and Dean Jones was our sub pro.

He was the most aggressive cricketer I ever came across although Jeff Lawson wasn't far behind at Haslingden.

It must be inbred.

But both great guys as soon as the matches finished.

Never bought into this great guys off the field baloney, Prick on the field generally equals prick off it unless they are in your side of course. The Aussie Brad McNamara was the worse I came across when he was the pro at Haslingden I would label him as a prick on the field a coward off it.

It's beginning to look like the Aussies are now turning on each other as public opinion in Australia hardens against them. Smith looks like a rabbit in the headlights whereas Warner is trying everything to slime his way out of it. I believe that Warner's career is well and truly over. Good riddance.

A bit of a surprise about Lehmann but the Aussie administrators seem to getting this right.
Bancroft, Warner and Smith instigated the Bairstow head butt incident in the Ashes series, I bet young Jonny is laughing now!

I saw that too but can't remember where. An ex SA player was covering the game and wondered how it was possible for the Aussies suddenly to get reverse swing after 20 overs. He asked several camera operators to follow several Aussie players exclusively and, sure enough, the evidence was found.
Absolute bastards. Reputation in tatters, a bunch of gutless bullies, sponsorship being withdrawn left, right and centre. The sack must be on its way.
Lehman sent the 12th man on to tell Bancroft to get rid of the sandpaper/tape sharpish.

How many players were complicit is impossible to prove, but Lehman had to be in the know.
Perhaps he's threatening to reveal everything that has gone on historically, unless he is exonerated. Very hard to swallow.

Looking like Warner is essentially at the root of this one...he was plotting with Bancroft before one of the sessions..

Smith says to them..'hey what are you two up to..?...hang on a minute, I don't want to know..'

- apparently the squad/team have turned against him, and Aussie cricket experts on the radio reckon that Warner has played his last game for Australia.

Cricket fans throughout the world are dismayed at these developments.

I wonder how this will affect games now?

If, like many suspect, this kind of thing is commonplace surely it will now stop because tv cameras will be all over it.

Are we suddenly going to see sides scoring 800 every innings because the bowling sides have lost their opportunity to cheat?

I think going forward they might bring in a rule that the ball has to be held by the umpire between overs (like happens when a wicket falls). But that's obviously not practical after each ball. If it has been common place to mess with the ball at international level then it will probably stop now due to this incident as cameras will be hunting it out. The problem is it could still be rife at the lower levels and very difficult to stop.

Wow.
Great news actually - well deserved.

Absolutely no way that Lehmann could not have known about it. The whole team and coaches were clearly in on it - how could they not have been ? You are not telling me that Smith and Warner took only one bowler - Bancroft - to one side and cooked up the plan for this single game. The whole team are culpable and they have been doing it for who knows how long.

The Aussies are trying to deflect this by acting very quickly and handing out harsh punishments to a couple of sacrificial lambs.

What should have happened is a swift 3 or 4 week independent investigation by the ICC followed by Australia being banned from all cricket for at least 12 months if (when) they were found guilty.

I think they've moved very quickly with the bans because they've had to. Good to hear that Warner is singled out as the instigator, he's a distasteful character, but I can't believe Lehmann wasn't in on it. Surely he won't last much longer.

Yes I know there was massive political pressure on the Aussies to act quickly....which is good to see. But the downside is that effectively they get to try themselves and hand out their own verdict and sentences.

This is distilling how serious there cheating has been. It’s not really that different to the match fixing scandals and should be subject to ICC further investigations and sanctions / punishment.

I agree Lehmenn will go - probably today.

Little sympathy for Bancroft - he’s a grown man who knew what he was doing. The only bit of sympathy is he must have been under immense pressure to do this by the senior players and as said he is not the only bowler who was doing it - he’s just the one that got caught.
