dsr wrote:Surely the point of obsession is that you can't be "a bit obsessed"? Think about football - Dave Burnley could be said to be obsessed with BFC, and fair play to him if that's what he wants - no criticism from me. But I only go to home games, perhaps one away per year, and listen on the radio when I'm in Lancashire - I exhibit some of the signs that Dave shows, but that doesn't make me slightly obsessed, because it isn't possible to be slightly obsessed. Like being a little bit unique.
Hmmmm, interesting but I disagree. I think you can be a little bit obsessed. Dave Burnley is clearly massively obsessed.

I'd say I'm obsessed with Burnley FC but only a little bit. I've always been a bit obsessive. My hobbies and passions tend to take over all my thoughts and time. That's always been the case.

I'd say that you could put me -on a sliding scale- at the lower end of behaviour which could be classified as obsessive.

Nearly all of my friends support football teams and they're all (more or less) "proper" fans. There isn't anyone who never attends a game, for example. However, only ONE of my friends matches me for obsessiveness in his devotion to being a football fan.

Yeah, you can definitely be a "little bit obsessed". :)

I made sure every one was facing the same way.
Ah, you see if you're counting notes then that's a very, very sensible thing to do.

I think the strip on the right hand side might actually be designed to help "finger" them along, so to speak.

I demand that all the notes in the till in the pub I work in face the right way. Anyone caught putting one in the wrong way gets a rollicking.

It actually has a name. it's called "Volume OCD". It's minor but it's still definitely, 100% a form of OCD.
If course it has a name. Anyone can make up a name for something. I'm wasting my time trying to change the mind of someone who can't tell the difference between a real, medically-defined disorder and a non-medical name for a quirk which, if it's not part of something larger, is just a quirk. It's called ColonelCoolOCD. See. It's got a name now. It's real.

“Rowlocking”

You missed a golden opportunity there.

Good job I spotted it for you

I have another thing regarding items that are locked. For example I normally get a pang of horror that I’ve left the car open. Normally as the car is just out of range of the remote key fob.

The car is always locked when I go back.

Knowing someone who is diagnosed with ocd the little obsessions a lot of people have, volume on even numbers, or pens lined up etc, is nothing compared to how debilitating ocd is. It has a massive effect on a person's life, and is for the most part completely illogical.

What will happen if you don't have them set to even numbers or have cans etc facing the same way?

The thing about Craig in Corrie I bet is actually making people become OCD when before they weren't.

It could make things worse.

Wexford touched on this one earlier- I'm into "threes" (not in a mucky sort of way).
Stir my tea; has to be 3 or 6 times.
I eat a mixed bowl of fruit for breakfast, has to be 6 grapes, 3 strawberries, 6 blueberries, apple cut into 12 pieces etc etc. I even end up throwing one or two odd items away if they cant be "threed".
It's not the same with bigger items, I'm quite happy with one pie, one piece of battered fish etc. I'm happy to indulge my little quirk but dont wish to become huge.

It's when you get the anxiety before hand, when you think something will happen to you if you don't do xyz, when you think someone will die if you don't do xyz, when you have suicidal thoughts if you can't do xyz, when it stops you living like someone without ocd can.

I like to do things in even numbers (but only 2, 4, or 8), and line things up evenly, but having seen someone mentally ill with ocd, and having sat with them through therapy sessions, what I do is nothing.

I’ve had OCD for 35 plus years. Only ‘came out’ about 6 years ago, and everyone acknowledged it by saying “we knew some years ago’. It’s serious stuff that’s on a sliding scale. My employer has told me I can’t work because of my OCD, and I’ve been off work for 5 years or more. One side of your brain says “do it, do it now” and the other side says “don’t do it, tit, never do it”. Then the mental battle commences. 24 hours a day. It’s not a funny subject, but contradictionally you do have to poke fun at yourself and accept it. As most posters have said - we all have it in degrees. There’s some fantastic books, treatment and therapy that I’m happy to point anyone towards if they wish.

Vacuuming is where I get weird, I love doing it.

If I see one little bit of fluff in the living room, then all the downstairs has to be vacced.

Is this thing about worrying if everything was left OK in the house part of this?
I have a bit of a routine when I leave the house for a few hours out- have a quick whizz round, make sure the windows are closed/tv off/got my keys and wallet etc but not too fussy. I have a mate who I go to races with- half the time we're out drinking & betting on the nags, he's worrying about if he turned the gas off or maybe he left the door unlocked or his downstairs window open etc. It seems to pretty much interfere with his enjoyment of the day out & I sometimes think he'd be better off staying home so he can keep checking up on things.

There’s lots of deep reasons behind it LeadBelly. I’m not ashamed to say I did 12 weeks at the Priory. Supposedly there’s a reason behind it all. I’m not so sure. Girl next to me had to take her hair dryer, straighteners, microwave, toaster, and kettle in the car to work in fear she’s not switched em off. Next along was a guy who went through toasting a full loaf each morning till he’d buttered one slice correctly. Last one to give you an indication was a guy who had to get out of bed repeatedly until he’d done it ‘right’. It could be 20 goes. Comical stuff, but sad. when you’re living it. We’ve all got our demons....

One has to adopt a male attitude to cleaning (i.e.creative experimentation.) I tried the top six bars and it took ages and damaged them. Then I thought I'd make a work of art out of it and just did a space invaders attack. Literally squirting HG degreaser in lines down the slats to form a pattern and then a bit of water with a garden plant atomizer and a quick wipe with a cloth. The cleaning is now an art project.

Jasper Johns did the American flag with molten wax and a bit of house paint and earned millions. The Happy Mondays just threw paint at their album covers. Still. One has to have class in the act of weathering and creating a patina. it probably would look better tip top but it depends...

Happy Mondays 'Pills and Thrills' cover and 'Tokoloshe Man' I think was just them messing about. If you prefer UTB, put in 'Stones Roses' where I put in 'Happy Mondays' and then you'll feel a bit better.

I've got a memory of them messing about with paints on the South Bank Show or something similar. It may have been the Stone Roses, they are equally as obnoxious as the other to me, but there was a correlation regarding drugs and messing about, where creative experimentation comes to the fore. I don't need drugs to do that personally as I'm an artist by nature, not just somebody on drugs who can see more in a painting pallet than what's on the canvas.

I think the time to worry is when you get it out at the same time as making sure the Queen's head is facing the right way.

Surely if you just forced someone not to do it they would eventually accept there's no need for it. For example if they book into therapy for a week and the guy who likes a whole loaf is only allowed one slice. He would have to accept the way it's buttered if there's no choice.

I am Mr OCD.

How far does it go?

I printed my own CD spines with the artist, album name and even my postcode (in case of theft) on over 600 CDs. I also colour coded the spines, blue for Classical, red for pop music. This enabled me to put all the CDs in order of artist.

Every cup, bowl and plate have their own place in the kitchen cupboards. If my wife puts them away wrongly, I have to redo the whole cupboard.

I think with OCD, you would have to redo the cupboard even when everything was in the right place - just to make it even righter.

The test is, if you discover that everything is in the wrong place just at the last minute as you're about to go to the Turf. Do you miss the match to put the cupboard straight? Or if you go to the match, do you fail to enjoy it because you're concerned about the cupboard? If the answers are both No,. then you aren't OCD - just (possibly) eccentric.

The CD thing is perfectly normal. If you kept reprinting all the labels every few weeks because you wanted different colours, or because the spacing was wrong, or you didn't like the font - that might be different.

LCP that is not OCD, that's just practicality. Not much practical use in the holocaust of Armageddon, though.
