At least French has proper grammar, something Danish lacks.

"Has anyone considered France moving to England?"

"Yes... Burnley voted Brexit!"

SammyBoy wrote:Not France as such but I've always thought the idea of moving to somewhere in Europe sounds appealing, even if only temporarily just to experience it for a few years. The main problem I can foresee is that I can only speak English (and some very rudimentary German), whilst this isn't usually an issue on holiday I could imagine it being a hindrance when it comes to finding decent paying employment. I'd be interested to know how anybody who has actually moved has fared in this regard.
Hi Sammy, you should take a look at Holland if you are, like me, limited to English plus a few phrases in other languages. I lived there for a period many years ago. Great place to live. In the cities almost everyone speaks English. In many places the language in the work place is also English.

Switzerland would also fit your language skills. Again, English is very often the language at work and, if you find somewhere in the German speaking part of Switzerland, your rudimentary German might give you a start - though I understand "Swiss German" is not quite the same.

Don't forget Belgium. Everyone speaks English there, since the French and Flemish refuse to speak to each other in their own languages.

Q: What language do a Swede and a Dane use when they speak to each other? A: English.

Lived in lausanne, Switzerland and Paris region for a while years ago. Live France, and would live there tomorrow, if I could. The only thing I find frustrating is the bureaucracy alluded to here by some... The French love a lorry load of red tape! That said, the way of life, woke life balance, weather, etc, are just great. France has everything you need: countryside, mountains, beaches. Fortunately for me, I'm more or less fluent and have been for 25 years, and it's definitely a major factor... People will always treat yiu better if you can converse with them:less likely to stitch you up, too!

Beautiful country is France. It is one place where you have to make a lot of effort with the locals (I imagine thats even more the case as a resident) but IMO that can only be a very good thing.

I can't believe how cheap property is there. Always imagined it to be as expensive as everything else is. I have been looking at property in Eastern Europe. But what would this cost in England for example? http://www.rightmove.co.uk/overseas-pro ... 03663.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Exactly the website that I've been looking at. Some incredible properties for half the price of your average Barcelona apartment. I've already told the wife that we're moving to France, haha. Somehow I don't think I'll get my way but one can dream.

Just the three cottages, haha. Need a bit of work but can't complain at the price.

I found this place yesterday: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/overseas-pro ... 37940.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You'd maybe get a very, very average apartment (about 60m2) in Barcelona for that...in the suburbs.

Edit - I also found a place for less than €200k...a big house with some land and 2 (2!) lakes.

Looks like working from home has some perks after all...

By the way, (ref. your previous reply to me), I wouldn't worry too much about the Socialists, it's the Communists and Fascists that should concern you more. :D.
I have a friend whose French residence is about an hour from Montpellier, so we may seek out your bar at some point.
It's the Anarchists who cause the most trouble.

I say "Anarchists" - they're just unemployed youngsters.

Anyway, be sure to introduce yourself (or at least wear a Burnley shirt) when you visit! :)

If you want cheap property, you should check out Northern Ontario. You can buy an entire lake for the price of a single condo in Europe.

There's a very interesting story about a crazy Scotsman, who, back around 1900, tried to build a huge house on the shores of an isolated lake about 50 miles from the next human being. It was his "castle", being multi stories high. He did all of the work by himself, and he was found dead eventually of a suspected heart attack. They suspect that he had an unfulfilled love affair which drove him to his madness.

My mistake. He drowned, not a heart attack. Look up the facts by googling "White Otter Castle".

Seperate note. Just watched a place in the sun in brittany. Its unbelievable what you can get for the price of a new build up Burnley wood!
