Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Arfield would make my 18 if I was picking a ‘best matchday squad’ of my lifetime, Marney May sneak in too.
Two superb pro’s who have given the very best portions of their footballing careers to us, two promotion campaigns and both crucial to us solidifying at this level last season.
Someone somewhere will get a great player in Marney if he can stay fit, he may be 34 but he could still see a team to promotion in the Championship - he absolutely bosses that level.
Arfield if he is to go to SPL will be one of the very best in that league, comfortably, and I could see him being part of a Renaissance for Rangers if they were to get two or three more of his calibre.
A sad day, but one that more than most truly reflects how far we have come that this (sadly) makes sense for all parties. With Burnley on the cusp of European football and a 7th placed finish, it’s worth remembering the lads who got us - these two are right up there with Dyche, Heaton, Mee and Vokes as modern day Burnley Legends.

That’s what I get from sitting next to a statto on the Turf. I’d never checked it but assumed it to be correct. I’ve just checked it and it is.NottsClaret wrote:That's a good stat. Great moment against Chelsea though, even if it did lead to a bit of a masterclass from them.

Great post. And something even more remarkable about how far we have come is that moves to Rangers and Forest are a significant backward step!jedi_master wrote:Arfield would make my 18 if I was picking a ‘best matchday squad’ of my lifetime, Marney May sneak in too.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Love these two players. I didn’t like Marney much in his first couple of seasons to be honest, I thought he over complicated things and played a lot of over-ambitious passes which weren’t in his skill set. Dyche transformed him in my book - and his partnership with Jones - was perfect for where we were. He’s gone on to be a very consistent player.
Arfield has been a pleasure to watch and has always come across as a terrific lad with a great personality. What a journey from out-of-contract close season signing to establishing himself a Premier League player. Loads of goals stand out, Blackburn obviously but that late equaliser at Watford in the run-in (1st Dyche promotion) and his last minute winner against Everton were special (the Everton goal in particular as that was the last team I hadn’t seen us beat in the flesh).
Best Wishes boys, you’ll always be Clarets!! Bournemouth will be emotional.

That's what I thought, I assume Dyche is correct and Arfield is indeed a boyhood Rangers fan with his brother being a Celtic fan.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Obviously not that big a fan!

Arfield was a superb technical player, he could always look after the ball in tight spaces and that's one of the reasons why he played so well for us in a wide position.
His strike at Brentford was an absolute peach, you could tell he was really popular with his team mates as well. He'll be missed.
As for Deano, a cult hero and rightly so. One of the fittest players i've seen when at his peak and his long passes to Trippier showed the ability he had.
It's been a privilege to watch the pair of them perform for our club.

I have a feeling we are coming to the end of an era, the next era I hope will be as good.
Both fantastic Burnley players, I personally prefer Marney and was always a fan even when he got some unwarranted abuse.
Wish them both the best.

Both been brilliant players for us and its a sad day for sure.
I am sure that both of them would say that they have loved their time at Burnley and it has been easily the best part of their playing careers. We have been great for them and they have been great for us.
Hopefully the fans will get a chance to show their appreciation in the last game of the season. Perfect scenario would be to winning the last game by a couple of goals and we get to bring on both players for the last 10 minutes. Not sure SD is the sentimental type though !!
Makes it even more vital that we keep the likes of Ben Mee, Ward and Tom Heaton, Barnes etc at the club next season. We need that core of players who understand the culture of the club and what SD expects.

Both of them are what I have come to recognise as Dyche type players. Both hard workers, bags of energy, stick to the rigid framework with no little skill. Two reliable players we would normally miss but maybe we are moving forward with a different type of player.
Big thanks from Cirrus Minor and all the very best for the future for Dean and Scott.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Will always remember Scott's interview after Wigan on the 1st promotion, 11 month before with no club and now about to play in the Premiership. The humility in that interview was terrific, always been a big fan of the man..always offered 100% but unfortunately found wanting at times. Best moment for me, our 2nd goal against Everton last season.
All the best Scott, and thank you.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
I'm not convinced it's a good idea letting Scott leave. Deano is well down the pecking order these days and he'll want to play regularly so i understand that one. Both of them have given everything to the cause over the last few years. Personally it's Arfield who I'll look back on with greater fondness. Some of his goals have been crucial and memorable. He deserves all the plaudits he receives and i really hope they do something to mark both their departures Vs Bournemouth.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Very, very sad news, and in the case of Arfield, not good news in a football sense either.
Marney has been a terrific servant, particularly once he found himself working with a manager will to commit to a single style of football which suited Marney down to the ground. His work with Laws, who never quite worked out what he wanted his Burnley team to be, and Howe, whose clear style was singularly unsuited to Marney, was less successful, but even in those days there was no one who had a bad word to say about his commitment and attitude. As someone said above, his fitness and his pace were hugely underrated assets, particularly in the first Dyche promotion season. He's leaving at the right time because he's at an age where he needs to move on for a final first team stint that just isn't going to come here.
Arfield, though, leaves the more immediately gaping hole. A bit like James Milner, his technical ability, ball retention, intelligence and willingness to follow instructions to the letter probably haven't been appreciated enough - which is some statement given he's been something of a fans favourite throughout. I still think that, especially in a 4-5-1, he'd probably be the ideal man to play off Wood - good with his back to goal, sure first touch, good at "recycling" the ball and reading the bounce. I reckon he'd have had a lot to offer next season had we kept him. Replacing him as a footballer will cost us a small fortune and I doubt anyone good enough to replace him off the pitch will be half as good a character off it.
It makes it even more important, in my opinion, that we retain Mee (even at the risk of him going out of contract) and Heaton this summer. To lose too many of the players who established the culture of this squad in one go would be an absolute disaster, irrespective of whether we have other good pros in the squad.
But in the meantime, we've got the memories, That image of Arfield and Duff running towards the away end at Ewood arm in arm is one of the defining images of the Dyche era, and will be whatever we achieve now Arfield has gone.

Does anyone think as a one off, for a special and to and extent sad day at Turf Moor, that perhaps before the game, at HT or prior to "lap of honour" there could be a montage on the big screen of the highlights of their careers at Burnley? There's so many great moments in the transformation I think it be a fitting tribute to two greats, and a classy way to say farewell, so they both know how much we appreciate what they have done for us.
The roof will come off with the goal at Ewood!?!?!

Great players for us and I'm both sad and happy that they're leaving. We're moving on up and those two have played a huge part.

We will follow their journey as we do with all good clarets that wore the badge with pride the very best of luck to Scotty north of the border and I would love to see Deano at Wigan I think he would be a great fit there guile they are going to need.

Just to add balance here: They were both on the football scrap heap before they signed for us and therefore should be eternally grateful for everything our great Club has done for them.

That is the opposite of the trajectory his career was going. He hadn't made the grade at Huddersfield who were a step behind us back then. He hadn't even featured regularly for them in League One.claretspice wrote:Maybe Arfield was, although I'd say a player of his ability and attitude was always likely to rise to the top eventually.
Somebody else will know the other offers he had when he was released that summer but I believe they were for lower league clubs.

two good things come out of this for me. firstly, announcing it now gives the fans a chance to say thanks rather than just him disappearing after the season finishes. secondly, i think the way both departures are being dealt with, by both club and players, shows the high level of respect between them.
not often you have a manager who says that the club wants to do what they can help a player departing for free to make a success of their next move.
these are two players who have been vital to our recent period of success under this manager - arfield in particular must rate as one of his best signings.
sad to see them go but its the right time and they're doing it the right way.
very best of luck to them both.

Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
Yeah, I'm not saying that if we hadn't picked him up that summer, he'd have been picked up by another Championship club. He might well have dropped down a bit further. But he'd have got a deal in the football league or Scottish Prem i'm sure, and I reckon given his combination of talent or ability he'd have eventually been noticed and moved through the leagues. Whether he'd have made it to the Premier League I don't know, but I doubt he'd have ended up on scrap heap back in 2013 and I certainly don't think he'd have stayed there.Rowls wrote:That is the opposite of the trajectory his career was going. He hadn't made the grade at Huddersfield who were a step behind us back then. He hadn't even featured regularly for them in League One.
Somebody else will know the other offers he had when he was released that summer but I believe they were for lower league clubs.

Didn't Arfield have the choice of Burnley or Southend?

Arfield got more grief than plaudits from the crowd, let's not forget that.claretspice wrote:Yeah, I'm not saying that if we hadn't picked him up that summer, he'd have been picked up by another Championship club. Re: Dean Marney & Scott Arfield confirmed to leave
complete admiration from them both, played a huge part in our history. I wish them both well and hopefully Marney can stick one or two in the Bastards next next season !

I'm sorry but I do seem to have forgot that.Diesel wrote:Arfield got more grief than plaudits from the crowd, let's not forget that.
When exactly are you referring to ?
If you are on about the odd idiot who does not understand football then we have had that with lots of players. Dave Jones was a perfect example where a minority of fans did not understand the importance of having a player who kept the ball and started many moves by keeping it simple. Those minority would much have preferred him go for a wembley pass or put his head down and set off running into a brick wall (like Chris McCann had done for the previous 2 years before Jones arrived).
We have a guy next to us in the JML who hated Danny Ings and thought he was rubbish and years ago I had someone sit near me who blamed Robbie Blake for everything !
99.9% of our fans appreciated Scotty for what he did for us. He has been a massive part of our success.

I don't recall any verbal bother for Arfield away at York but I DO remember lots and lots of mutterings. I think I can recall somebody saying he "wasn't good enough" but it's a long time ago now. Let's also put this into perspective and remember that Scotty was a relatively unknown lad who had been a bit-part player who was then cast off by a side who had only recently made it into the Championship.TVC15 wrote:I'm sorry but I do seem to have forgot that.

Scepticism is always a healthy stand point but we need to guard between the fine line between healthy scepticism and downright cynicism. More than anything in the away stands I remember reading a lot of negative comments about Arfield on the old CM site well before he'd kicked a ball for us. Many said he wasn't good enough without ever seeing him kick a ball.
As it is, he entered into a squad which we now know had a fantastic professional and committed attitude and Scotty became a key part of that. It must have helped him grow in confidence and improve as a player but as much as he benefited from that environment he also contributed to it. I suspect he is one of the players who contributed more than most. Perhaps if he'd entered into a squad with a toxic attitude he'd have failed? That's hypothetical and it doesn't matter. What matters is that the Scott Arfield story at Burnley is one of success after success after success.
But yeah, there was a lot of negativity towards Scotty when he first signed, even though I don't recall much more than mutterings on the actual terraces.
