This was the one that sprung to mind for me.BFCmaj wrote:Manuel Negrete Mexico v Bulgaria (Mexico ‘86). Was down in Southampton at my uncle’s house watching it with my brother who decided to go to the toilet just as the goal was scored. As an 11 year old, that was possibly the best goal I’d ever seen up to that point.

My favourite England one was Lineker’s equaliser against the Germans in 1990.

Roberto Baggio vs Czechoslovakia in 1990. The first WC I remember and this goal is as good now as it was then. Brilliant stuff.

Platt, Owen and Lineker's equaliser against West Germany spring to mind.

Archie Gemmil for Scotland when he skipped past 3 defenders to score a cracker, can’t remember which WC or who it was against any ideas?

Billy Hamilton v Austria.
I was 11 at the time and to see your hero score in a world cup was magical.
(The one and only time I ever bunked off school to watch the match too!)

As controversial as it is, take the 3 lions glasses off, and Maridonna dribble through what has to be 1 of the best England 11 we have had since 66, has surely got to be admired from a football perspective, but often over overshadowed by the cheating bastards hand ball

I love that Negrete goal. There were some sensational goals in ‘86. Vasily Rats and igor Belanov scored awesome goals for Russia. And Denmark’s dismantling of Uruguay had some super team goals, Elkjaer, Laudrup and that Hummel kit.

Dont think he could have if he tried. Watch the clips of Maradona dribbles from the early and mid eighties and players booted him, grabbed him and fully assaulted him and still couldn't knock him off the ballDCWat wrote:Every time I watch that goal, I still will Peter Reid to haul the little two hat down!

Re: what's your favourite world cup goal ever?
Way too many to mention. But will have to plump for a top 5.
Owen vs Argentina 1998. Unreal goal and so exciting to see someone so young burst onto the scene like that. Probably the peak of his career at 18!
Owen vs Brazil 2002. Honestly thought we were going to win the world cup when that went in.
Roger Milla vs Colombia 1990. All 4 of his goals were special in their own way. But the one vs Colombia where he disposseses Higuita followed by his corner flag dance is probably the most iconic of all.
Bergkamp vs Argentina 1998. Probably the best goal in the best quality world cup of my lifetime. Outstanding skill from one of my favourite ever players.
Beckham vs Argentina 2002. Even though its a penalty. The passion with which he struck that and celebrated it after the last Argentina game was exactly what we all felt. He had just made the World cup after injury too. Probably my favourite England player ever. Goal was made even better after Owen had bought the penalty.

Has to be Bryan Robson`s against France (?), 1982 in the 26th or 27th second(?). Pretty much my first memory of watching England, if not football!! What a brilliant player he was.
After that it has to be the `86 World Cup were they were flying in from all distances - my vague memory is the commentator screaming "Rats beats Bats!!!" I think it was a Russian player beating an Eastern European keeper.

1986 was a really good World Cup you are right. Loads of great goals and the likes of Russia, Belgium, France and Argentina were playing very exciting football. Even England were pretty exciting with Bobby Robson changing the team after a poor first game and bringing in the likes of Trevor Steven and Steve Hodge and Lineker started scoring with that thing on his arm !!

best footballer on the planet.
I agree he was the best player ever though. In the 1982 World Cup he got the absolute living sh-it kicked out of him against Brazil and then against Italy Claudio Gentile man marked him with one of the most brutal displays you are ever likely to see. Maradona was a young kid but even then they knew that was the only way to stop him - I assume Peter Reid and the rest of the England team never watched the footage !
Best goal for me is still Carlos Alberto’s in 1970 though
