Can it still be called a hurricane if it can't blow a crisp packet down the street.
As far as i can tell from the reports it's flooding that is the bigger threat to life and property, not the winds.

The categories only apply to wind velocity. This thing carries a tremendous amount of moisture. The whole east coast has been setting records for latent water moisture in the air. The places you have to worry about are the Appalachians, because they will wring the moisture out of the air when they cause the air mass to rise. Plus, being in the mountains means that the rain gets concentrated into the river valleys, rather than spread out on the flood plains. Places like Ashevile, North Carolina might see the largest flood surge ever.

Sad to hear about the casualties.
On a lighter note this is how outside reporters try to make things look worse: https://www.indy100.com/article/hurrica ... ll-8538841

Amazing graphics on the news this morning showing a reporter stood on a street that will get the storm surge with the water cut round her. Truely frightening.

I have a colleague who lives near Asheville in western North Carolina. He thinks they'll be ok and the worst they'll get is a bit of rain.

Asheville already noted in field reports. Lumberton, which isn't that far away, expecting record floods. It will eventually start moving north. Where, exactly, impossible to say. These things have minds of their own.

Hurricane parties are huge in the States. People barricade the windows, and drink all night
long with their friends. Hopefully, there's still a house in the morning.

Florence is about done. Lots of rain, but little wind damage. Still, more than 20 killed, including the idiotic woman who drove around a highway barricade into a flooded stream, and lost her 1-year-old baby. Beyond stupid.

Bit of an update
- 35 people now confirmed as having lost their lives
- 10,000 people still in emergency shelters as a time of writing (1.30am Wednesday UK time)
- The Fear River still not done rising. Evacuation zone now 1 mile to both of its banks
- Wilmington still cut off - they can’t get relief trucks in
- and one for the comedians amongst you - 1.7 million chickens drowned in a factory that flooded - yep, 1.7 million!

Factory chicken growing is huge in the States. We have one about 2 miles south of where I live. You don't want to be downwind.

Sounds like something a very stable genius would say.
