If we score against Huddersfield I will look out for anyone just waving their hands in the air and being silent. I will know then they are a University of Manchester student ( or not all there ;) ). Imagine if we all adopted this at Turf Moor it would be a cracking atmosphere.

I think this is brilliant - made me laugh out loud.

Students being students yes - but I think you'll find that even at University these pioneers of 'what next to ban' are in a small minority. It's nice that they are trying to consider marginalised or frightened people's feelings, if that's really what it's about (which I doubt).

But, either way, it's wrong to assume that all students are muddle headed tw*ts, the vast majority still like beer, sex, football and study hard enough to get by.

Take it for what it is - a funny story for most, infuriating for people who take it seriously.

Why the **** don't the mods split the board into non-football and football pages or, better still, delete any political threads ?
These threads follow the same pattern every time and the board is being ruined by the same group of five or six posters yah-booing each other from their side of the fence.

Bede wrote the same word with several different spellings..... spelling was just to get the message across. Anyone making an issue of spelling is clearly not really English.

Bede was one of the foremost writers of Saxon England though.

Comparing the Venerable Bede to Ringo will have the poor man spinning in his grave!

I'm all for free speech, who isn't, but this board is being turned to sh1te by a group of self-indulgent idiots who use any excuse to provoke an argument, usually political.
Who really cares about some moronic journalist arsing about at a conference or whether a group pf students are not happy with clapping ?

Did you actually see Wrongo’s attempt at writing the words ‘self aggrandisement’? It wasn’t just a different spelling, it was practically a brand new word. And the daft sod tries to pass it off as a spell-check error. Jeez, what language is his spell-check stuck in?

Here's the Collins dictionary

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dicti ... andizement" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's the freedictionary on line listing.

https://www.thefreedictionary.com/self-aggrandizing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's another from yourdictionary.

http://www.yourdictionary.com/self-aggrandizement" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Notice anything Lord Beamish!!!!!? Seems you can throw in a "z" and the spelling and pedantry police don't take you out in the nearest bit of spare land and shoot you afterall!!

Not saying you can't use an "s" but it turns out that the high horse you got on, turned out to be a bit of an ass.

Like I said. Go down the spelling route - game over.

Do you mean if you didn't go to university you can't be clever? I went to the Grammar school in the mid 60s to early 70s, and I think I am correct in saying only around half a dozen students went to university in that time. It was a class orientated,, privileged thing. So many clever people from there and the other schools in Burnley were denied the opportunity. However, they went on to have good careers. Now it seems everyone goes to university. Good luck to them and I hope they grasp this amazing opportunity with both hands. No twist on the OP title intended.

But Wrongo, none of the examples you put here actuall match the one you used. I can’t actually see what point you’re trying to make here(I defy anyone to). Maybe it’s that you should have used an online dictionary before trying to utilise a word that evidently several notches above your brain’s pay grade?

Universities have certainly been devalued since the 90's never mind the 70's. As for the rest of it its chicken and egg to some extent. More people go into higher education because more higher paid jobs require qualifications. In the past being good at your job was a shoe in for promotion, now it's never cut and dried.... and hasn't been across several governments, so its not a political ideology. I was talking to my new lecturer today and he became a pup reporter only a couple of years prior to me joining one of the first Media HE courses in the country..... he's had thirty years in the Newspaper industry I couldn't get a long contract for love or money and ended up sliding out of the industry all together. I'm back in education, because my education is massively out of date and I don't have a trade. Everyone has their own reasons for being there as there are career paths.

When I was at Uni me and my mates didn't know anybody connected to the Student Union, nor any of their policies. You'd get the odd person on campus handing out candidate leaflets around election time, but I'd wager the voter turnout was less than 5% (maybe less than 1%). Policies like this mean absolutely nothing to 99.9% of students and have likely only been heard about because of this article. It's probably just a group of muppets thinking they're not doing their job properly unless they're changing something.

“Not saying you can't use an "s" but it turns out that the high horse you got on, turned out to be a bit of an ass.“

I’m glad. Because that’s a perfectly legitimate way to spell it. It’s the difference between American and British English. You, when you bother to look it up, prefer the American.

Your original effort was neither.

So, you see a thread "Clapping Banned at University" and you think to yourself "wow, a university banning clapping, let's read on". You read on, only to find, in literally the first sentence of the article that a "University" hasn't banned clapping at all, in fact, it's the Student's Union that have tried to be more inclusive to those with hearing impairments and other sensory issues.

They are "urging" people to use BSL clapping, they aren't forcing people to not clap, just suggesting alternatives, again, to be more inclusive to people with different needs.

What's happened? No one has read the article they've just frothed at the mouth and ejaculated in their politically correct knickers.

Don't want to get into any rows.... but it did jump out at me they were American rather than English dictionaries. There's little in common in the common language. (sorry school flashback)

It wasn't simply a case of American spelling, it was a completely wrong spelling. Nothing wrong with misspelling things, until you tie yourself in knots trying to explain it.

Fair enough. Can't argue with that, it did strike me as a little strange as explanations go tbh.

It was more a desperate fumble than an explanation.

Yeah, the bloke who has asked the mods to shut the threads down because you and your gang decided to hijack whatever issue was under discussion and ruin it by having a go at me and anybody else who dared to question your arrogant views. You've done it again on this and the "journalist" thread. There's something seriously wrong with you.
I have apologised for and rectified any mistakes I have made, you can't even do that.

I have spells spelling it ‘spelt’ and spells where I’ve spelt it ‘spelled’.

Pity Wrongo’s poor autocorrect, surely the most over-worked autocorrect in history. Presumably that’s why it’s given up the ghost and is no longer trying to replace misspelled words with the closest real word it can find in its dictionary, as designed. Instead it’s churning out any old made up word safe in the knowledge that Wrongo will never notice.

Lord Beamish wrote:No Wrongo. You spelled it completely wrong. I spelled it in one of the two accepted ways. You were wrong and I was correct. No amount of wriggling and foot-stamping will change that in the eyes of those viewing this thread.
See post # 23 above and actually read it. You're in danger of snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory! :roll:

Who needs to ask the mods when you're around !?

As for admitting my mistakes. See post #23 above.

Weyhey! We've done the spelling. Now the drinking. That's without me having to upset Remoaners by saying Jean Claude Drunker!

Line!

You’re going to make yourself even dizzier, Wrongo. You do realise that there’s a difference between claiming a victory and actually winning, don’t you?
