It wasn't the Southampton game that season but the following season.

Apologies also to Tricky Trevor.

Plain bar scarf my dad gave me as a birthday gift when he decided I was ready to start joining him at the Turf, Oct 23 1965, beat Sheff Utd 2-0.
It remains one of my most treasured possessions, somewhat battered and worse for wear nowadays - a bit like me. Thought I had the match programme but unable to find it. (I have hundreds of old programmes boxed up in the basement, should have got shut of them when I moved overseas.)

The first time I watched Burnley "in the flesh"! October 1972 - I was the Club's guest at Craven Cottage. An unforgettable experience - and meeting Bob Lord as a bonus ;) ;)

I think I remember you telling me about being a guest at your first game. Meeting Bob Lord? I could possibly think of a more appropriate word that bonus. :D

My granddad had a scarf similar to that which he wore at the 1947 Cup Final. My dad wore it at Wembley in 1962 and I wore it at the Sherpa Van final in 1988. My dad died in 1989 and I think my mum threw it out, considering an old tatty rag (she really didn't understand). Probably for the best, we won on the next occasion at Wembley with the scarf not there.

As for the programme for your first game.

Thanks for the programme image Tony - I actually looked it up recently when you added the late-60s section of matches and programmes to the online database.
Just rooted about again in my old souvenir stuff in the basement and was delighted to find that I also still have the original hat that my mum had knitted for me to wear at that first game - a little small and the bobble is long gone, but I wore it for my first few seasons of going to matches with my dad.

I considered it a bonus as he was very approachable and affable - could be that I met him on one of his good days :) Of course at the time we had a Maltese Prime Minister (Dom Mintoff) who was a "Bob Lord" character himself. He was threatening to push NATO and British forces into the Med and Bob Lord's first words to me were "How's your Mr Mintoff?" with a huge grin across his face. We chatted for about 10 minutes and he was very keen to hear how and why I supported Burnley!
