Pleased for Lewis but even he took time to acknowledge the amazing work done by Marcus Rashford this year. I look forward to sharing my appreciation for Rashford when we're all back on the Turf.

Re: Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton
It’s a vote. Clearly the majority thought that Hamilton deserved the award. Perhaps Fury stating that he didn’t want the award resulted in a lack of votes. Did you vote?DomBFC1882 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 11:28 pmDriving the fastest car versus fighting the best heavyweighs in the ring after years off with depression and drug and alcohol abuse. It was down to your comment on being a barometer of being a ‘real person’.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 11:26 pmI really don’t know why you’d suggest that I think he’s faked his depression. It’s not a nice thing to suggest.

That suggested that you thought of him as a fake. Which suggests everything he said about illness and depression was made up.

That’s not how it was intended and is a case of putting 2 and 2 together and making 5. I have admiration for Fury’s sporting achievements and his battle with mental health issues.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 12:30 amIt was down to your comment on being a barometer of being a ‘real person’.

My point about him being a barometer of a real person was a flippant remark, but my point was that Fury is not really like your average person. He’s far from it, and in many ways that’s why people like, or in some cases dislike him.
What I don’t understand is why someone thinks that Fury is more of a ‘real man’ than Hamilton. I can understand why people may like one or the other, but that doesn’t take away from their respective sporting achievements.

Re: Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton
I think that last paragraph will depend on what sports people follow.
I'm a fan of boxing, and I listened to a lot of what Fury has said over the last few years. I don't believe that was down to make him more money - which would make him less of a man.
He came out and made a lot of people aware of what can be a hidden illness. What people from the outside can see as a hidden illness.
He made an appearance on the J Ross Show last night - I bet he helped over 1000 people.
I just think he's offered a lot more dimensions as a person than Hamilton and offered more as a human.

Re: Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton
But that doesn’t make Fury more of a ‘real man’ does it? It’s not Hamilton’s fault that he doesn’t, as far as we know, suffer from mental health issues. This is an award based on sporting achievements. You don’t want awards handed out to people based on their disadvantages do you?FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 12:52 amI think that last paragraph will depend on what sports people follow.

It’s great that Fury has spoken out about his issues, and if that has helped people in a similar position then that’s fantastic. But this is an award that the general public vote for, so the most popular person wins. In this case that person is Hamilton.
FYI, I don’t care about the award and didn’t watch the show, I just find it interesting to read people’s reasoning behind who they think deserves to win.

Ask a woman and a real man is someone who can do the kitchen for them. There is no universal definition.

Well yeah. I suppose the point I’m getting at is that ‘real man’ is a ridiculous phrase with which to characterise someone. I wouldn’t say someone who doesn’t watch the BBC is more of a real man than someone who does, but hey ho.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 1:04 amIt totally depends on what your definition of a "real man" is.

In any case, Hamilton was the public’s choice. And we know how important democracy is.

I'm a big Ronnie fan, but motor racing is a much bigger sport than snooker so I guess he always had a bigger share in the voting chance.
It would have been nice for Ronnie to win it, but I bet he was in a very similar camp to Tyson Fury - he knows who he is and doesn't need the award to show anything else.

What I mean is that the viewing figures and subsequent popularity were bigger in the days of Hendry and White etc. It doesn’t seem like as many people tune into the snooker as they used to.

Marcus Rashford has been outstanding in his work with child food poverty and deserves all his plaudits. The SPOTY is awarded by sports fans ,this year petrolheads won.

I’m not a big fan of motor sport but I do think that Hamilton matching Schumachers 7 world titles qualifies as the stand out British sporting achievement of the year. Fair play.
