Billy Elliott the musical. Brilliant.
Also We Will Rock you.

Re: Favourite musicals
Shakespeare has been the source for many crossovers....
As has many others...
"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" was based on the short story “The Sobbin' Women” by Stephen Vincent Benét, which in turn was inspired by the abduction of the Sabine women as narrated in Plutarch's "Life of Romulus".

Some good shouts on here already. Big fans of Les Mis in this house.
One of the best I’ve seen recently is Tim Minchen’s Matilda.
Some of the best songs to come out of the West End in years.

Re: Favourite musicals
Already mentioned are West Side Story, Carousel and The Wizard Of Oz, all brilliant.
Also, Les Parapluies De Cherbourg, in French. Unusual in that every line in the film is sung. It's superb.

Re: Favourite musicals
I absolutely hate musicals.
Hate them.
I don't know why.
I just hate them. Seriously. With a passion. Nothing against them but I just hate them!
Even programs I used to like, the Simpsons, Family guy etc if they had a "musical" episode, I'd turn them off.

Re: Favourite musicals
someone mentioned We will rock you..........that is a hideous bag of sick, truly plague like in its production. obviously a fan of top gear. maybe some of the older musicals were okay, but the modern variants are hideous. anything loyd webber had a hand in is pigswill. the miserable one is just repulsive claptrap for the middle class pests, odious slop.
Re: Favourite musicals
Les Miserables
Wicked
Lion King
Miss Saigon
Billy Elliot
Blood Brothers
They’re probably the best one I’ve seen (most live, a couple on TV) although it does depend on the cast at the time...
Want to see The Book of Mormon...heard good things about it but was only playing in London the last few times I looked and the ticket price was a pisstake!

Les Miserables. If operas are included then Aida and La Boheme.
Re: Favourite musicals
Oh Brother Where Art Thou is one of my favourite films, partly because of the great songs and music, but I wouldn’t class it as a musical.Taffy on the wing wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 11:33 pm1. SOUND OF MUSIC......

Re: Favourite musicals
I just love going to live musicals. Seen many of the ones mentioned on here; all good shouts.
I saw Oliver as a child and took my own children to London to see it, they were spellbound; Robert Lindsay was Fagin.
Anyone mentioned Evita yet?

Re: Favourite musicals
I used to use a chippy run by a couple called Archibald and Martina. One night I was late getting there and they said they couldn’t serve me.
I was ok about it and with a shrug of my shoulders burst into the song ‘ Don’t fry for me Arch and Tina’
Is it that Evita ?

Stormy Weather is the only one a I can say I like.
I'm always impressed with the Fred Astaire musicals though, and the Busby Berkeley stuff, but that is more for the dancing which is either stunningly beautiful or requiring incredible fitness.

Re: Favourite musicals
I had two friends when I was young Boss , Samantha and Janet.
When I was leaving home my mum would always shout out ‘are you going out on another Sam and Janet evening’ Bless her.
I never doubted you Boss.

Re: Favourite musicals
My Mrs and I were on holiday in Cornwall at a Holiday Park near Bude ... on the Wednesday night there was a game show of TV's "Deal or no Deal" in the bar...
It was a £1 to put your name in a hat ... and if yours was chosen you got to pick a box ... one person from the 22 chosen got to be the one choosing boxes.
My wifes name was one of those called out, and so she had one of the boxes ... although she wasn't the one chosen as the player ... when the person who was playing chose her box it also (like all the boxes) had a prize in it, as well as the money amount.... the prize was for her and it was a 4 CD "songs from the shows" box set...
Everyone chosen got a prize
The person playing the game won a fiver and the contents of his box although what his prize was escapes me now
The 4 CD's were played regularly on long car journeys ... have now transfered them to an mp3 player now (as CD players don't appear in cars these days)

I was raised (subjected to) HMS Pinafore with great regularity by my Gran growing up. As a result I know every word but have to say it a guilty pleasure now and I quite enjoy it.
Phantom is always the best for me, though.
Also does it get any better than Springtime for Hitler, from The Producers?
