it's amazing how much more relatable it is in colour.

Alan Ball was one hell of a player

Still have this Special Edition from the Liverpool Echo for the 66 Final in with my old Burnley scrapbooks. Can still remember watching it with my dad. "They'll never score now" he said as the German's prepared to take that last-minute free-kick....

You could have had a ticket for the final for ten bob, a programme for 2/6d a pie and a cup of tea at half time and still have change out of a quid. (PS...Not sure if Twixes had been invented then)

Re: World Cup July 1966 on the telly
I was 13 when the final was played and thought the game was top notch quality football at the time. I watched the whole program this afternoon and thought the colourisation was excellent. But I have changed my views on the quality of the football. I could not believe the wide open spaces in midfield and the lack of marking. My man of the match was a close run thing between Bobby Moore and Alan Ball. Alan Ball edged it I think. Martin Peters had a terrible game. The Wembley pitch was a disgrace. No subs. Ball boys running on the pitch to retrieve the ball for throw ins. Eccentric refereeing (no change there then). Very limited chants from English fans. No action replays. Awful commentary. Hardly any diving or fake injuries.

The standard of football back then was horrendous.
Dwight McNeil would be one of the worlds best player on that era

Not sure he would have been picked for England at that point in time.

Re: World Cup July 1966 on the telly
Thought the standard of football was excel and enjoyed watching the game again after watching it on TV in 1966
Hugh John’s was to, IMO, a fantastic commentator and did not keep talking all the time , (giving useless pieces of information about players visiting their grandmas for tea and cake on a Wednesday for example)
The co commentator Dave Bowen was also exceponly speaking a few times during the 120 minutes
Hinchcliffe, the clown ,never shuts up with more useless comments “like he should have scored”

My dad still has his ticket stubs from the England games including the final.
He said there was someone on the radio this week who’d been to the final who found a £5 note on the floor in a pub before the game. Not a bad day for him!
