There were plenty of people disputing the substitution at the time without the benefit of hindsight. More so than usual.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Aug 15, 2021 10:22 amThe subs clearly didn’t help yesterday, although that’s easy to say in hindsight. What I did comment on at the time was how high Brighton’s back line had got. At times they were 10 yards into our half because they were unconcerned about our pace on the counter. I think Vydra would have been the right move at that point to pin them back. But we know that Dyche is more conservative and looks to hold what we’ve got. It works more often than not but when it doesn’t he will obviously attract criticism.
I think that Brownhill was about to replace McNeill before their second as it became obvious that McNeill was fading badly. Perhaps if that sub was made 60 seconds earlier we would have prevented that goal, but who knows.
Fine margins as Dyche says, and that is football. Some of the overreactions to the defeat seem a bit immature.

Re: Subs
I know there were, and I was one of them. I didn’t claim otherwise. I guess a lot of Dyche’s subs are questioned at the time, but it’s easier to be uber critical with the benefit of hindsight.
Re: Subs
People sat near me who I dont normally notice being particularly critical at substitutions were clear in their view at the time.

Re: Subs
My point about hindsight is that we probably question most of Dyche’s substitutions at the time, but if for example we had held on yesterday as those players are more than capable of then this thread wouldn’t exist. I know it’s a fairly obvious point, but the majority of the criticism exists due to the outcome.
I thought we played very well for over an hour yesterday. I couldn’t name a player who was having a below average game. We looked the most likely to score again at the point at which they equalised. If you didn’t watch the game and then read the reaction on here then you would think that we hoofed the ball for 90 minutes and created nothing. The disappointing outcome leads to some very reactionary criticism.

Re: Subs
Considering Danny Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey were both unavailable due to injury, yet Brighton still had enough quality on the bench to turn the game around, shows how short we are of quality players in the squad as things stand.

I think I said something along the lines of "Crikey, Barnes?" and then something along the lines "we all moan like mad about it, but it then proves to be a sound decision"
Think on reflection this is one of the very few times the manager has got it badly wrong

Re: Subs
Jay didn't do a lot the whole game, but what changed the match imo is Dwight tiring. It was crying out for Pieters to replace him to help Taylor down that left side.
Gross and the triangles to get the ball to the byline on the edge of the box seemed to be their only threat. After we'd got away with it on a couple of occasions we did nothing to counter it. You could see it getting closer 10 mins before they equalised, and the winner was identical. The really sad thing is it should have been foreseen and prevented by the players on the pitch, and SD on the sideline, but nobody did owt about it.
