Just a talent wasted
Still had a decent career, despite how it ended and it's not like he asked his body to give up on him.

I would have thought he’d be the last person to be put in charge of under 18s
Why?
He will understand what they're going through, the pressures and the need to look after themselves etc.
Also played at the highest level, albeit briefly due to injury, but he can pass on invaluable experience.

His lifestyle didn’t help

I've heard him on there in the past, but does that mean he'll be a bad coach?
He's already done coaching there, so they've seen something in him to give him a full time role.

This thread confirms my views of our ‘experts’. Stick to growing marrows in your imaginary allotments.

If someone has messed up his career because of 'lifestyle choices' it likely means they will make an extra effort to prevent it happening to his new charges. I've seen it with a coach of a youth team, ten year olds. If anything I would say he was too serious but his team had one successful pro footballer (300+ appearances at Millwall) and a couple who nearly made it at pro clubs (Crewe and Charlton I think).

I think a big reason his lifestyle was the way it was, is because he was always injured so not training.

He’s hardly going to start encouraging 16-18 year olds to come to the pub with him.

At least we have spelt his surname correctly now he has retired. He is usually a county in the south west of England.
