214/6 Foakes gone for 42. Excellent 99 partnership and the team looks so much more settled with him coming in at 7. Bairstow going through the gears well still.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test
Well done Bairstow, Foakes & Stokes, at least they've given England a total for the bowlers to work with.
Now let's hope Bairstow can get us to 300 with the help of the tail. And for once JB even got a review correct.
Still serious issues at the top of the order though, but what's new with England.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test
Well for starters I'd swap their 2 openers for ours, Holder & Roach would probably also get in my XI, and Joseph would be pushing for a place also, far too many medium pacers in the England ranks, now if you have the ability of Anderson & Broad you can get away with lacking genuine pace, but most of England's seamers don't, especially when the decks are flat.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 3:52 pmOn current form no, but that is like saying Watford can't claim Norwich are a bad side. If England were at full strength how many of the West Indians would you have in our 11

Brilliant ton from Bairstow, even more so when he came in at 48-4, and he's almost single-handedly saved England's bacon today.

Superb 100 for Bairstow. His technique has been tested with the swinging ball.
Not the quickest pitch but not one you will ever feel properly in on.

268/6 at stumps. Did not see that coming at lunch. Good day and hopefully these two can get us to 300 in the morning.

The Dukes ball certainly made it a testing day.
But I bet the likes of Gower and Botham on the sidelines wished they could have faced this when they came over. Rapid bowlers on up and down pitches.

England's day and who'd have thought that at lunch, good chance of passing 300, and that in itself is a rarity, back to back tons for Bairstow, who's surely secured his place for the foreseeable now, as should foakes have following that usual knock in a testing day.

Looking at the batting line-up, I think Sam Vokes might fancy his chances of a call-up.

Really didn't think we'd make 250 at one point yesterday.

Hopefully Leach can hang in for a short while, Bairstow said yesterday 320-350 would be the initial aim

Even without Jimmy and Broady there I didn't expect Overton to open the bowling.
Root won't make the summer with these choices.

Never seen anything in Overton at this level that would suggest he’s good enough. Certainly not as a pick above those two.

I reckon these two are a fourth seamer at best in most test sides. Not opening the bowling.

This bowling ‘attack’ is painful. Almost like dropping your two best opening bowlers isn’t a great idea.

How long do planes take to get a Mr. S. Broad and Mr. J. Anderson out to the Caribbean?

Maybe it could be understood if they were giving some new guys a go eg Mahmood, yet they roll out with Woakes who averages 54 away and Overton who’s already been given chances.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test
Precisely. I’m all for giving young players an opportunity, as we did with Jimmy in the one dayers in Australia back in 2003, but I don’t understand this at all.

It was only injuries and the fact Jimmy was in Australia at the time, that got him his chance.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Mar 09, 2022 5:38 pmPrecisely. I’m all for giving young players an opportunity, as we did with Jimmy in the one dayers in Australia back in 2003, but I don’t understand this at all.

Ben Foakes gets built up way over the top. He looks decent but why are people claiming he's the best glove man 8n the world?
He has a 68% catch rate at Test level.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test
England toiled in that final session, and the West Indies could well get a 1st innings lead tomorrow, apart from that brief hour where Stokes & Wood bowled well the attack has been fairly toothless.
Slow pitch isn't really helping either side to assert control on proceedings, and it's looking like a 2nd innings game right now. although the draw can't be totally discounted yet.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test
Not exactly going well without Anderson and Broad is it, really just highlights what most of us suspected that England have a genuine lack of bowling options after that stellar duo.
West Indies in serious danger of building up a useful lead, and being able to apply pressure to England's fragile top order.
Oh great now we've resorted to bowling short at a medium pace, that's really going to trouble the batsmen that tactic.

He's not going to get a stumping and makes catching a lot harder.
Stupid idea.
Re: West Indies v England 1st test
It means the batsman has to stay in his crease or be out if he misses the ball. Unless his opinion of Foakes' stumping skills are so low that he takes the chance!Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 6:25 pmHow?

I love how they said Stokes wasn’t going to bowl this test and he’s now bowled 20 overs.
