Come on! Lets see this for what it is. Clever Showmanship from Pace. Great move PR wise, 'One Of Our Own' committing to the cause just before our next round of matches in our fight for survival. Bringing everyone aligned to the same cause, one final big push with positive news.
Happy with this as although goals have been an issue I feel with Wout, Jay Rod, Barnes, possibly Cornet and A.nother, money really needs to be spent on central midfield this summer above all other positions

Great news and it shows we are consolidating our squad.
Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
I’m the opposite. New managers often don’t “get” football clubs and destroy lots of hard work that’s been done over many years. With Jay Rodriguez and (Hopefully) Ben Mee the transition under a new manager will be incredibly smooth. Those 2 know more than any others what this football club is about.

Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
Last six then. I'd overlooked Lennon being a new signing.
Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
I definitely think he has some adapting to do, he can on occasion wait for the ball to come to him or spend a little too long on the ball. Both signs of him not having the amount of time that he may be used to.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 6:29 pmHe may have a more settled position with a new manager.
I think ACON took a bit out of him, along with niggling injuries as he's had to adapt to a faster, rougher league etc.
I agree about a general lack of middle ground with him![]()
The good thing is, he’s obviously got the skill set to be able to adapt to the faster pace and as you say, hopefully he settles into a position under the new management.

My response is EWWW, his wages were £50,000 a week, his goal record is horrific. Frittering more money down the **** pan out of sentiment and not based on ability. I'd have kept Barnes and let Rodriguez go, the weekend performance only reinforced my opinion.

Only on here you can get a genuine 100 per center player with over 200 appearances for the club compared to a 10 appearance waste of a wage.
Good news keeping a good player that wants to play for us.

Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
Very surprised but he can still have an important roll to play but for me as third choice striker at best, in the premier league that is in the championship I’d back him to get 10-15 goals. I’d love Vydra to be next but maybe there’s been to much water under the bridge for that.

Like I said I’m happy for him personally as it’s a great deal for him. But for the club it seems very strange.

In reality, most of them, so we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
We just cannot afford to sign a new squad. Next season there will be 5 subs to play. We need a fairly settled squad with additives, or we will be run into the ground.
They can all still do a shirt and an hour or a half, where players know how their team mates play, will be invaluable.

Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
Good signing for me.
It's not possible to re build almost an entire squad with the little money that will be available. It also keeps one more of the " core " players within the club which keeps the spirit going for any new comers.
He's not been prolific of late, but nobody was under Dyches last 12 months. A different style of play may suit him and hopefully he will contribute more goals to his play.
Jay, Barnes, Wout and a new 25 yr old + Cornet will be a decent forward line.

When he left us for Southampton he was the complete centre forward.
Still a threat for us “up frontish”. I believe it has been good business to buy him in instalments from WBA.

Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
I suspect news of any player re-signing after his contract is up this season will be met thus. Like any side in any league we need a regular goalscorer and at the moment we don't appear to have one. Would any of our forwards/ strikers currently cause a genuinely positive response? I'm not sure they would. Only recently this board seemed to be in general agreement t about a 'massive overhaul' required in the summer but since our mini revival it appears that for some just a little tinkering is required. I suppose you pay your money and take your chance.

Surprised this sort of deal hasn't been left to the next manager, unless it has.
Has definitely improved over the last month and like all pros needed a run of games to get it together.

I am not worried what he is earning.I am sure there has been common sense applied between Pace and him. So much for those saying he was going to the States. I heard he did not get on with one of the departed coaches-maybe this has had an influence in staying. He has a good footballing brain and needs a steady partner up front. This season he has partnered Wood, VW, Vydra, Barnes, played as the lone striker. IF we go down he will score goals in the Championship, but can score in the PL with a stronger team, which I presume we will strengthen. I am now more confident Ben Mee will also stay

Quite happy to see Jay Rod staying. Ashley Barnes is a little surprising , but I’m happy enough he’ll be around the forwards. I’d also look to get Bardsley signed up (possibly a player-coaching role); Pieters is our best defensive full back and would certainly like to see stay. I would also try to convince Vydra his future is here too, hopefully now he can have a manager who sees his largely still untapped potential.

Good news! It’s no coincidence that Jay looks far more effective when we start playing a bit more football. Very harsh to properly judge him from the last 18-24 months - he was hardly given much of a chance, had injuries, always seemed to be the fall guy and we weren’t playing to his strengths. Very flexible, intelligent footballer too. Can play left side of a front three as he showed at Southampton.

Nothing to do with being sentimental. The other week he scored a very important goal against a relegation rival and was unfortunate to hit the bar at Brentford. He can still play at this level. You compared him to someone who has barely played and when he has it has been average at best.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 6:55 pmHe’s going to be 33 in the summer and he’s scored 3 goals over the last two seasons.

Jay is one of maybe three naturally, extremely intelligent (football wise), players we have.
Personally I’d put Jay, Cork and Mee in that bracket.
Happy with this signing. Pretty sure it will be on a reduced wage (almost certainly would be the case if we were relegated).

If we’d have tried to ship out ten and bring ten in we would be certs for relegation. We need to keep the core group and hope to land 3 or 4 good young signings who will have to be patient and look to win the shirt over the season, just like Collins, Roberts and Cornet have done this season. Wout was of course a straight replacement.

I fully expected Jay to leave this summer, but I think it makes sense keeping him for couple of years. I think he's done well for us since the turn of the year.
If we stay up I think he'll make a very good squad member, and if we go down I think he'll be a core player for us at Championship level.

As others have said you would certainly class him as an intelligent footballer
Wonder if he is thinking ahead and maybe considering a move into coaching/management
If so another two years here - even if that might mean limited playing time - could prove to be much more valuable than switching to a lesser club and/or a lesser league

Re: ARTICLE: New two year deal for Jay Rod
Surprised at this news TBH, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the rest of our transfer business, however giving a 33 year old a 2 year deal hardly fits in with ALK'S model of building a younger squad does it, and I'd hope Jay is on a much reduced salary.
Now if retaining Jay allows us to get a CM in the building then fine I can see the thinking, and replacing all 10 OOC players was never likely whether folks desired it or not, for starters we simply don't have the required funds.
Jay has endured a barren spell, but in the past few months he's been a key member of the squad, and contributed vital assists and goals.

There’s an awful lot of OOC players who will move this summer. You have absolutely no idea what the contract is ( for example, may include a coaching role or favorable release clause) and many players in their senior years shift positions to use their knowledge and experience more. I could definitely see Jay dropping deeper as time goes on because he has a really sharp brain.

Not trying to be rude, but in what world would you want Jay to drop deep. He’s not particularly great on the ball and he would get eaten alive in this league.CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 4:40 amYou’re just blindly assuming he’ll continue to play upfront. Again, if this wasn’t a lad from Burnley would anyone be remotely happy with this. I could understand it if we were relegated but why now when we have a chance of staying up.

Damned if they do and damned if they don’t. It wasn’t all that long ago, many on here were, maybe justifiably, very critical of the club for letting a number of contracts run down. I don’t believe anyone on this board has any idea of JRod’s new contract including his wages both now and in the future. I’m ok with him signing a new contract whatever league we’re in.
