Muric 6 - not a negative 6 just had little to do. Pleased with what I saw
Roberts 8 part of a back 4 that conceded no significant chances or shots on target, nearly scored too,
Matesen 9 see above and a goal with his weaker foot. Done debit that
THB 8 quietly unassuming & effective
Taylor 9 as above but out if position so +1
Cullen 9 excellent
Cork 8 see THB
Brownhill 8 as above
Bastien 7 at times looked to struggle with the speed of the game but loads of glimpses of good stuff too
Costello 7 Pro debut. Some really positive touches and confidence. Two opportunities blown seem to set him back a few mins but really positive debut all in
Barnes 8. Led the line well

Wow. As shite as Huddersfield were, the coaching our boys have had in such a short preseason and with such a turnover of players has been nothing short of phenomenal. Kompany and staff take a bow for that first half performance. Like watching Man City.

Surprised at the OP’s 6 for Harwood-Bellis. Positional play spot on, and if we’re still thinking about a captain…..
He was the best player on the pitch for me.

Very enjoyable game. I am actually surprised other posters haven’t marked it higher.

One of the most one sided games I watched in a long time
Honestly, I’m just shocked you expected any less from a PL team demoted to the Championship.

That’s not to say I’m not impressed and somewhat our style of play, but I’m not shocked we dominated.

If we had a pacey/clinical striker 😮💨

Muric 7 - hard to rate as had do little to do
Roberts 8 - very good I thought, nearly scored
Harwood-Bellis 8 - looked assured
Taylor 8 - Did well, Charlie is just a good footballer isn't he? And this shows we have another who can play in multiple positions
Maatsen 9 - Wow what a player this guy is
Cullen 8 - Looked like the focal point of the team
Cork 8 - Class act in this division
Brownhill 7 - did ok, much to come from him this season
Costelloe 7 - Very good for a debut, shame he missed that big chance
Barnes 7 - led the line well
Bastien 7 - clever footballer

Twine - 7 Clearly got class
Vitinho - 7 as above

Overall just so pleased we have got the new style up and running so quickly. Genuinely feared the worst after the latest sales. The whole performance was a breath of fresh air, well done all.

A few things:

Considering that's basically the first time this team has played a proper 90 mins together, the football was incredible. Cool, crisp passing, excellent awareness, hunger to get the ball back and a positivity to everything.

Huddersfield aren't very good and much sterner tests will come. There have to be, surely? I'm saying that, I've no idea what anyone else is like but if if they're a marker of a team that can finish 3rd, then this division really isn't very good.

We need a bit more in the forward areas and need to shoot a bit more, rather than try to be clever 100% of the time.

We got a bit cocky (but why not when you're that good?l and Roberts in particular strolled a bit too much.

Harsh to be critical though, this was a superb start and there is plenty to come from this team.

Muric - 7 nothing to do, cool AF with the ball at his feet in the 6 years box, equally so by the touchline

Roberts - 7 stroller but he could afford to be

THB - 8 very very impressed with him, looked a cut above. Will be interesting to see him when one of the championship bruisers rocks up against him.

Taylor - 8 not sure he's the long term solution there but no problems tonight

Maatsen - 9 ridiculous

Cullen - 9 I thought he'd be decent but this was something else

Cork - 8 dominant

Brownhill - 8 enjoyed himself out there tonight and so did I

Bastien - 7 will take a bit of time to get to the pace and physicality of this league but technically he's very good and clearly an intelligent player

Costelloe - 7 isn't he a striker? Did well out there on the right, certainly looked ready for 1st team togger

Barnes - 7 really important for us tonight, he was exactly what we needed up top. He's a better footballer than he gets credit for and he'll have to keep showing it to stay in the team. Needed his nous to hold things up toward the end.

Twine - 6 took a while to get a touch but showed some good ones when he did. Unlucky with the free kick.

This was so refreshing, the first half especially was crackers..
. we had more possession I that half than I think we had in all pur games combined last season.

A few things to tighten up and hopefully some further additions bit what a start. Youth and experience playing with absolutely no fear. Brilliant.

Muric 7 - thought some of his distribution was poor tbh but clearly integral to our style of play. Very cool though and had to double take a few times as to where he was stood !
Roberts 7 - good game and our new style should suit him well. Think he was just lacking a bit of his fitness and sharpness which is understandable
Harwood-Bellis 8 - thought he looked very assured
Taylor 8 - played well and played some really good switches of play.
Maatsen 9** outstanding
Cork 7 - did really well.
Cullen 9 - thought he ran the match from the first minute personally
Brownhill 8 - loads of energy and took on a senior role in the midfield. Good to see.
Bastien 7 - really good closing down. Especially in first half. The way we closed the ball down and won it back was fantastic and he was a massive part of that. Tired in second half but no wonder with the amount of running he did in first
Costelloe 7 - pretty raw but absolute bonus to see him start the game and play like he did.
Barnes 7 - I thought he did well and his touch looked good. It’s a long time since our Ashley played a full game and he can’t do that twice a week. We need to sign at least one striker but hopefully Barnes as a key role to play too on and off the pitch as he is a big character and our longest serving player now with plenty of experience in this league. Should have had a clear pen (but did look slow for that chance)

Twine 7 - can’t wait to see more of him. Free kick was great and think we might see a few special goals from him. Once he gets his fitness up he’ll be an exciting player for us.
Vitinho - promising and busy. Thought his energy and good play was a big part of us dominating the last part of the game.

Huddersfield could not cope with us. We completely outplayed them in that first half. They tried to make it a battle in the second half and took us off our stride for 25 minutes a bit but they still didn’t have a single shot on target. Commentators talked a lot about losing their best players but they were play off finalists and still had a lot of the same team….more than us !!

Only one game but that was great to watch and a big relief that we can play that well knowing that we are still building a team and trying to get players in and have so many new players that have never played together before. Our pre season worried me but you have to give credit to the manager and coaches for what they must have done on the training pitch and the players for how they have taken this on board so quickly.

Team overall 8 out of Ten

mom Cullen

Twine up front instead of Barnes we win by 3 or 4

We'll tonk a few teams this season but on the other hand if we come up against a good counter attacking team We'll suffer some big loses

What a fantastic one sided game for an away team with all those shots and massive possession you'd have never guessed this was their game together, a brilliant rollacoater season ahead

I loved how we worked so hard in packs to win the ball back within 5 seconds of losing it. Some nice, controlled passing.

The only things I can criticise would be how we didn’t kill the game off before half time. And Muric’s kicking wasn’t great - he was ok when giving it 10-15 yards.

Overall, a very good nights work and puts the mind at ease after a summer of not knowing what to expect. Hopefully the performance helps to attract another 2-3 players that are needed.

The morning after the night before.

Never thought I'd see the day when I'd be reminded of the glorious fluidity and link up play of Winston White and Peter Mumby.

Last night was a joy to watch, lots of possession but with a purpose. Lots of chances created and the potential to get better, and Kompany is still targeting more additions (still needed).

Yes, let's be honest Huddersfield weren't great last night and there will certainly be tougher matches, but to quote the old addage you can only beat what's in front of you.

Anyway my ratings.

Muric 7 - Had little to do, looked comfortable when on the ball.

Roberts 8 - Looks like this system could suit his will to be on the front foot.

Harwood-Bellis 7 - Similar to Muric, but had a calmness about him and clearly was a talker at the back.

Taylor 7 - An unfamiliar position certainly to us fans, seemed to be happy enough there except for when Sorba Thomas turned him once.

Maatsen 9* - Really hard to split the MOM, however Maatsen just shaded it for me. Technical ability, pace and an eye for goal. Great start.

Bastien 8 - Intelligent use of the ball, full of running and many times found himself in space but the final ball went elsewhere.

Cork 8 - Our captain and certainly led by example, had a great game showing all the ability we know he has.

Cullen 9 - Could well be the most important signing of this new revolution, pivotal to everything we did well and well just different gravy.

Brownhill 8- Mr Energy, full of running we are used to seeing and now further up the pitch. Just needs to make his goal threat into a promise now. In this formation, I'd want to see him get 8+ goals this season.

Costelloe 8 - I really think this rating should be more a 7.5 to be honest. I was surprised to see him start and get his full debut last night, I thought he had a great first half and yes he passed up some goal scoring opportunities, but he more than contributed to the attacking fluidity and played his part. He should be really proud of that debut and not too hard on himself.

Barnes 8 - Write him off at your peril. Everytime I think he's done he bounces back does our Ashley. Led the line really well last night, ran the channels well and a few offsides and a goal aside he did everything you'd want from him.

Subs

Twine 8 - Look good in his 20 minutes on the pitch, ran the channels well, look comfortable on the wall and excellent technique on the free-kick.

Vitinho - We actually have a Brazilian playing for Burnley!!!! Not on for the required length of for a rating.

From TV.

Muric 6 - Didn’t have much goalkeeping to do but looked solid. Looked comfortable on the ball.
Roberts 8 - Lot’s of energy, movement, good defending and forward play.
Harwood Bellis 7 - Solid and controlled. Not really challenged by Huddersfield’s poor forward play.
Taylor 7 - Energy and bite. Had more defensive work to do then H-B and did it well.
Maatsen 8 - Not much defending to do but excellent going forward and fitted in well with the new way of playing.
Cork 8 - Solid and reliable. Turned up in the right places and helped control the game.
Cullen 9 mom - Outstanding first game. Has everything we want from a midfield player - defends, passes, attacks, bite, energy, a slight ‘edge’ that I hope he can manage. If he can continue this level of performance we have got some player here.
Brownhill 8 - Rejuvenated. A key player in this new set up.
Bastien 7 - All the movement and energy of the other new players.
Costelloe 6 - solid debut. Looked the part except for in front of goal. Well done!
Barnes 6 - Typical Barnes performance but looks a donkey in comparison to the new players. Maybe this is what’s needed. We’ll see.

Twine 6 - Wasn’t on long enough for me to assess but looks promising and that free kick….!

Firstly I though Huddersfield were woeful. It must have been difficult for them to set up against an opposition they had little clue how they would play - that could explain our first half domination - but once they adapted a bit in the second half they had more of the ball but did little with it and we still created opportunities. They are supposed to good at free kicks but their efforts were awful. I don’t think we can look at this game and think we are going to dominate against all comers.

Nevertheless, what a fantastic first half and impressive second. Defensively we did what we had to do and in attack we looked a threat. Particularly of course it was the movement, energy, tackling, pressing and neat passing of the new players, Bastien, Cullen, Maatsen, plus Roberts, Brownhill and Costelloe, that caught the eye. Considering this was created by a new management and coaching staff with lots of new players and to a new system in just five weeks or less of training, it was a superb achievement. A really good start.

What a joy to watch a Burnley team play like that!

From TV

Muric 7 not sure if he’s a good keeper or not, he had nothing to do. His passing was better than our whole midfield under the previous regime
Roberts 7 Good energy and movement, this new style suits him.
THB 7 a young Bobby Moore in the making
Taylor 8 was concerned before game, but he had a great game.
Maatsen 9 outstanding, still haven’t made up my mind about mom, him or Cullen
Cork 7 perfect for this new formation
Cullen 9 a combination of Defour and Barton at their best
Brownhill 7 good energy, another who should now flourish
Bastien 7 great work and skill in the first half, tired a little in the second
Costello 7 very happy to see one of our young players feature so well, a bit raw but potential is there.
Barnes 7 good performance, but this is an area we need to improve with a VK signing

Kompany and coaching team 10, the revolution has started.

From TV so hard to see the shape but it didn't look 4-2-2-2 to me more like 4-2-3-1; couldn't quite see where Costelloe was playing but it looked wider and deeper than a front 2.

Clearly Bastien and Cullen are quality players, which alongside Cork and Brownhill means we have a string midfield with Twine adding an attacking midfield option. Up front, I thought Barnes did well without really looking like scoring albeit he should have had a penalty in the first half. At this point he looks half a yard short of being really dangerous in this division.

Defensively, we looked a bit naive at times giving the ball away but overall we were so dominant there was not much danger even from the occasional ricker. I suspect Muric is going to fray the nerves.

The big surprise for me was Maatsen who had a fantastic game and to be honest I can't see why he couldn't get in a PL side. Probably, the biggest concern is up front we should have had more goals.

Overall, great performance, good to watch but perhaps we need more options up front to mount a serious Championship campaign. Barnes and Rodriguez are probably not going to get us through a 46 game season.

Positive points: the signings look quality players comfortable on the ball

Negative points: We may find goals harder to come by against better teams. We looked very narrow at times - against teams with wide players we may struggle. Maatson and Harwood Bellis are on loan.

Biggest mystery: how did we get Cullen for less than £3 million

This is how it looked on the telly...!

Muric - 7 - not a lot to do, commanded one set piece effectively but a little shaky on a couple of others. Very composed with ball at feet.

Roberts- 7 - a bit untidy at times but gave plenty of energy down the right.

Maatsen - 9 - an extraordinary debut; reads the game very well, hugely athletic and terrific on the ball. He'll get caught defensively occasionally and it's unlikely any full back can play 40+ games in this system but first impressions are he'll give us a dimension noone else will match.

Harwood Bellis - 7 - steady and tidy.

Taylor - 7 - not totally sure about him at centre half but he strolled through this.

Cullen- 9 - perhaps not as eye catching as Maatsen but equally important and effective. As good a quarter back performance as you'll see at this level in the first half, and whilst the second period was more equal, he mixed it with the best of them.

Cork- 8 - showed his pedigree throughout with his physicality, composure, quality and intelligence.

Brownhill- 8 - no surprise that with the quality of ball from Cork and Cullen, his athleticism and ability to move the ball quickly came to the fore, and his pressinh and haranguing to win the ball back were top drawer. He's a class act at this level.

Bastien- 7 - really impressive in the first half and pressed well throughout. Not as integral to our possession play as others, and faded, but for a first game in this country this was a very impressive start.

Costelloe - 7 - quick, technically sharp and handled himself physically. He'll be disappointed not to have taken one of two gilt edged chances that came away but there was plenty here to suggest he will be a useful option for us this season.

Barnes - 8 - led the line and linked the game effectively, and used his experience to help get us up the pitch and kill the game in the last 20 minutes.

Twine - 7 - looked at home at this level, worked hard, and unlucky not to bag with a glorious free kick.

Vitinho - 7 - helped us manage the last 20 minutes. Technically sound and apart from being very quick, clearly strong. Good signs.

This was as good a start as we could have dreamed of. The set up isn't so different to that under Dyche (the level of change to the formation is overstated), but the emphasis on possession is, and the transformation in the time available augurs very well for the season.

There are still areas to work on and the squad clearly needs a bit of padding out, but it's hard not to be a but excited by some of the football in the first half, and the game management in the second half was exactly what Kompany will have been looking for.

Cancelo played 36 out of 38 games for Man City last season in the Prem so not unlikely at all.
