Not sure why people are responding to Jakub

This is a person who once said he'd like a spin the wheel style system to determine what punishment is meted out.

Death threats for 30 odd years and now an attempt on his life for writing a ‘blasphemous’ novel.

Just **** off, religion.

Religion seems a bit all-encompassing , we know who the culprits are.

All religions seem to have peace at their core, it's how zealous nutters interpret their religion for some sort of weird evil reason.

Good to hear Salman's condition is showing improvement.

Pity people can't tolerate freedom of expression even when it offends.

Not sure about that. I'm completely irreligious and don't have a need to support/pan any specific religion but the main Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity. Islam) all seem to have a lot of smiting down, visiting pestilence/flood etc upon, revenge, punishment (even after death) etc to be described as having peace at the core. To me it all seems a bit "follow me OR ELSE"

Before that, the Greek/Roman gods weren't exactly a shower of do-gooding pacifists either.

The peace part happens when you've been converted into the religion and subsequent sub-sect

No, it’s perfectly correct - under the guise of which religion do abortion clinic receive acts of violence and bomb threats in the US, for example? I’ll give you a clue, it’s not the one you have a pathological hatred of.

It is not religion tht is the issue…. Methodism and Baptism started out as working class reactions to the Established church (in both cases Lancashire was very much the epicentre) - yet these are the dominant religions of the Mid West you use as an example. The distortion of the message by those with their own agendas is the problem.

Look at it as a football crowd… not every football fan wants to kick seven bells out of opposition fans, yet we got “football holliganism” and marched around like sheep because of it.

I couldn’t agree more, hence ‘under the guise of’ - was more the insinuation that radical interpretations of Islam were the only issues caused by religious fundamentalism

Far from it. Islam is like Christianity interpreted/manipulated by those in power. The main problem I have is the ‘Islamic interpretation” that blames the west for the destruction of the original power base in the Middle East… that was down to the Khan’s from the steppe (Modern Hungary mainly). This is when Islam went from a major intellectual centre and world leader to one that has traditionally opposed change. All the major faiths have encountered this problem, the Mid West religions are young… so are “Muslims” relatively speaking. Although “Islam” itself is one of the two oldest mono faiths ( along with Hebrewism)… created by the brothers that fell out by tradition, Abraham and Ishmael (I think).
