Re: Doc Martin
Let's compare Dr Martin to Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Better Call Saul, Mrs Maisel, and any other American or Scandi production. Its just laughable. British tv is rubbish.

I record all but the news or live things and watch at my leisure using the FF button to go past adverts. A much more civilised way of doing things. Unfortunately if I use the various iplayers, except of course the BBC, their controls, on my TV at least, are very awkward to accurately FF. I also watch some YouTube vids on my TV but their increasingly frequent adverts are starting to frustrate me.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 5:21 pmBit of easy watching. I like Cllunes the actor; thought he was brilliant in Goodbye Mr Chips and enjoy Doc Martin. Won’t be live though I don’t do adverts any more, that is what the FF button is for.

Re: Doc Martin
I mean….The Sopranos is my favourite show of all time (also love Breaking Bad, The Wire, Game of Thrones and about a billion others) but I wouldn’t think of comparing it to Doc Martin hahaLoyal Supporter wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 11:07 pmLet's compare Dr Martin to Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Better Call Saul, Mrs Maisel, and any other American or Scandi production. It’s a throwaway comedy - in fact I’d struggle to give you a comparative US show as their comedy is more standard sitcom fare with visual gags and/or canned laughter (also some superb stuff like Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Parks and Rec etc). I think Doc Martin is distinctly British, and the likes of it would not be found or have an audience in any other country really. Fair enough for not enjoying it though (I certainly wouldn’t say it’s great, it’s just a passable, inoffensive time sink set in a part of the country I adore) but to say that ‘British TV is rubbish’ is a huge statement.
Black Mirror, Fleabag, Peaky Blinders, Doctor Who, Killing Eve, The Bodyguard, Luther, Broadchurch, Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes, Sex Education, Spaced, Peep Show, Blackadder, Line of Duty, any number of classic 70s/80s sitcoms and Attenboroughs superb documentaries to name just a few were/are all brilliant in my opinion. I love US TV too, but there’s a place for both in my book

Agree with the post above (although not all of the British shows listed)
Back in the day we had a superiority complex that our tv was far superior and that Americans didn't "get" irony but now there are some superb US comedies.
We only get to see their best shows really and they axe most shows made within a few episodes if they aren't getting the viewing figures.
Don't think Doc Martin would be a top export and I don't particularly watch it but the wife watches it and its pretty harmless.

It’s the 2020s version of “I never watch Coronation Street”. The self image projected is what’s importantAlargeClaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 8:33 pmHas Clunes rogered your wife or something ? You seem remarkably bitter towards him . He’s a decent comic actor imo ,ok he does play himself ( I’m not in a nursing home so never seen Doc M ) though always seems affable enough with a glint in his eye .

I'm halfway through, but was pleased to diagnose the falling asleep tetchy woman before he did without looking it up. But the symptoms are not those that first tend to show themselves ( having actually got that condition).
I've always quite enjoyed the programme. Most of those lcd type programmes are pretty unbearable like that murder rubbish with Johnny Vegas.
