You raise a valid point, which I’ve also pointed out in the past, DA, although I am discounting the poor Germany side in Euro 2021 rather than the usual Germany who made Brazil look like a kids team.
Sven beat the Argies and El Tel the Dutch, in tournament football, that’s all I can think of in my time.

Re: England team
They'd also just beaten Portugal 4-2. Funny how you missed that one out.

Re: England team
Those are 2 I would say plus France in '82 but lets take the Dutch in '96. They had to go through the play offs to qualify getting beat off Belarus and only taking 1 point from 2 games against the Czech Republic. They also failed to beat Scotland in the finals so if you are going to describe the German team we beat as poor I think you could equally argue the Dutch side we beat in '96 was a poor one.
The point is due to seeding the best teams in the competition are at best only gonna face another top team once in getting to the Semi-finals and practically all the top teams have bad results so the logic you are using pretty much disqualifies any England team from since '66 as being any good.
Tournament football is about progressing and just as Bobby Robson was considered a success for narrowly beating Egypt, drawing against the Irish, drawing 0-0 in a bore draw against the Dutch, scraping past Belgium with a 120th minute winner and needing extra time to beat Cameroon then I think Southgate should receive praise for giving us our most successful results since Sir Alf Ramsey
Southgate will be rightly judged on how we perform in Qatar and another top 4 or better will be success whilst anything less will be disappointing.
If you don't rate Bobby Robson or Terry Venables as successful England managers then I can accept you might not rate Southgate but if you rate them and refuse to rate Southgate then I think you are just being blinkered and biased.

Re: England team
Phillips has withdrawn with a shoulder injury, and his WC place might now be in doubt sadly for him.
Re: England team
Desperate news that Kalvin Phillips has had to withdraw from the squad. Do you think Gareth will callup a replacement? Personally, I'd go for David Nugent - he's never let England down.
