The referee was stood no more than 12 to 18 yards away from the incident and didn't give it. The linesman, stood at least twice as far away, with a less clear view decided to give it. And the referee decided to be guided by his linesman. Yes, the linesman made a mistake. But you cannot defend the referee for being persuaded by his equally inept linesman. It was ridiculous and was the ultimate demonstration of his lack of authority throughout the afternoon.
I must admit that I hadn’t realised the lino gave it. Having not seen the game or highlights yet, it sounds like the officials were awful throughout and luckily we didn’t lose points because of it.

Roberts could argue all day long that you need to use your arms for leverage when jumping :D

Still hit the bar though and I never thought anything else.

When you do eventually see the highlights you'll notice that the referee was quite well positioned to see ( certainly much better than his assistant) and he doesn't appear interested in the handball at all.
No surprise really since there was no obvious claim from Boro, and he had a good angle to see what we also saw.

From where I was sat, I thought Roberts deliberately handled it and I couldn’t understand what all the commotion was about, it was plain to see as far as I was concerned.

As much as I dislike VAR, the refs have been shocking in the Championship. They tend to get some big calls wrong

Roberts clearly hand balled it. Other than that, all agreed.
Are you mad?

(See what I did there?)

Surely the important point is that the referee was only about 12 / 15 yards from the crossbar, and should have been able to see it.
From your view it was clearly hand ball, from our view - near the front in the Bob Lord just past the penalty area - it was clearly the crossbar. That's not me being "smart after the event", it's what we called at the time, and we weren't sure why a penalty had been given.
The referee was in generally the correct position to see this, and yet allowed himself to be over-ruled by an assistant, who couldn't have had a good view otherwise he wouldn't have made such a bad error.
I agree that VAR often clears these up, but at the end of the day I'd prefer to take the rough with the smooth, and if the referee was competent then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

 At full speed without replays, yes, I thought he did handle it. Hindsight / slow mo is a wonderful thing.

I was convinced he batted it off the line. My immediate thoughts was that I missed a whistle in the build up to it. Obviously the replays proved different.
