Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
Well according to SkyBet he's now 3/1 fav, along with Rodgers, to be manager at start of season, so looks like somebody has lumped some cash on him
Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
Won't go away this one. Big club Spurs but have they actually made a statement about recruiting Kompany or is it all just speculation from a paper seeking a story to publish?

Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
I would say if he goes it's not for the money it's to better himself but it comes with a lot of pressure from the chairman where as here there's no pressure we are a small fish in a big pond.
Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
These managers get into an elite loupe. Get a job with a big club, sacked after a couple of years(max) get heavily compensated, move to another big club, same again, sometimes return to the first club that sacked him at some point later, sacked again, and so it goes on. VK might fancy this merry go round of being sacked and compensated every 2 years or so

Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
Without knowing your personal circumstances but I’m going on the assumption that the money was too good to refuse and a once in a lifetime opportunity. I highly doubt VKs main factor would be for money and he will get other offers.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 1:14 pmI was settled in the North West but didn't stop me moving to London 27 years ago for a significant uplift in my salary....

It would be the biggest shame and disappointment in my time watching Burnley if we don’t get to witness one season in the PL with VK in charge.

Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
Story appears in a national newspaper (headlined on the BBC Gossip page) and people put a few quid on. High Street bookmakers only allow limited stakes on this type of bet and it takes very little money to shift the odds.
If the much talked about “5 years project “ was to get Burnley back in the PL then the job is almost done. If it was to leave us as an established PL club then obviously not.
Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
Who knows what's going to happen in football, especially for managers?
At the start of this season Patrick Vieira looked destined for bigger things than Palace, possibly with one eye on the Arsenal job in future.
That's now gone.
I'm sure that if VK were to be offered the Spurs job as he'll know he might not get another opportunity as good.

£20 can change those markets, Nagelsmann was odds on recently, Luis Enrique was a favourite when it was rumoured he was in London for talks, Potter gets sacked and he was a favourite.

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
Very unsettling to read these comments. We had years of this kind of talk when "Dyche to ......" threads were a regular feature on this site after a manager gets sacked elsewhere. The "spectre" of Owen Coyle still looms large in these parts. We were not even allowed to properly celebrate Wembley 2009 before rumours of Coyle going to Celtic and deciding to visit relatives in Scotland.
It's not beyond the realms of belief that Man City win the Champions League in the next couple of months and that Pep decides its time to leave the Etihad with his mission accomplished? If VK had for instance just settled behind his new desk at Whitehart Lane then 'his' dream job at City could pass him by.
I still think more chance of him going to City than Spurs. Lets hope he stays at Burnley for a good few years. It would be heartbreaking if he left.

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
The Burnley project still has legs. He will want to strengthen to a level. Then all ok. Once the no more money stuff starts, as is inevitable, then that is the danger moment. Not yet, fortunately.
Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
Managers collectively don't have any more loyalty to their clubs than clubs collectively do to their managers. It's more than possible that a manager who turned down the best job in the world out of loyalty to his club, can get the sack three months later when things go wrong. They all know that. If Spurs offer the job to Kompany, and assuming he thinks it's the job that best fits his career progression, then he will go.

…and still no decent journo has reported this.
Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
I honestly don’t think that VK will want the Spurs job. I get the fact that they would no doubt pay him more than we can afford but it’s not as though VK is skint! His family are also happy in the North West.
Also, why join a club that never backs its manager and will probably be losing its number 1 asset Harry Kane this summer? To make matters worse, they have a completely deluded fan base who despite everything I’ve just said, somehow expect to be challenging for major honours every year whilst also playing great football!?!? Talk about a recipe for disaster as proven by the last 8 managers to come and go through that club in the last 10 years!

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
It’s reassuring that nobody reliable has broken the news, but I’m not so reassured by Kompany’s presser today
I know it’s very rare for anyone to ever end speculation like this but after some positive comments around joining Burnley for the people and saying he thought he’d make the right decision, he diverted the “and you’re happy?” follow-up question by saying he always considers his current job as the biggest in the world and that he’s always happy, never satisfied.
Probably too much to ask but I’d have loved for him to just put it all to bed, say we’re building something here and he’s looking forward to managing us in the Prem!

In my mind there’s nothing to put to bed - it’s a report in the Sun by a reporter with 700 followers on Twitter like you said.

Not suggesting he said anything wrong, RV, just that he could’ve been more unequivocal in saying that he’ll be around next year, future lies with us, etc. Although I get that rarely ever happens.

Re: VK now top target for Tottenham
It was too good an opportunity to turn down, reasonably risk free with an easy reversal if things didn't work out. Money was a good offer but not out of this world, what it did was open doors that were previously not available to me and took my career above the trajectory it was on before the move. But to keep on track, i don't think for one minute VK would be interested in this, very much a non-story for me.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 1:19 pmWithout knowing your personal circumstances but I’m going on the assumption that the money was too good to refuse and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
Lets not lose any sleep over this one. VK will want to complete the project at Burnley and be known as an honourable and loyal manager. If we do well in the PL, then I can see many approaches for him, but it would be great and understandable as fans if we got one to two further seasons out of him and his team of coaches. If Michael Carrick was our manager, and had achieved the same 90 points, then this once reverred player by the Spurs fans would be talked about in the same way
I compare this lazy journalism to the day after we went down in May of last year. One journalist came out with the idea of us being broke, with no manager, an ageing squad, with 10 out of contract, and we were heading for League One. A huge amount of reporters and journalists on national paper, TV, SKY, Talksport all commented as if it was their original story. So people like Andy Townsend are not coming out almost a year later saying how wrong they were.
THe one thing in our favour as fans, it will hopefully make the club kick some arse and get those audited accounts off to the League & Companies House without delay. The last thing Alan Pace will want to do is stifle Kompany in the planning for next years squad as that would give him a reason to consider offers

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
As has been noted already, one can't and shouldn't expect a football manager, or indeed any professional to hold back his own career progression for 'loyalty' to his club/company as they generally can't/won't reciprocate. That said, given how high I suspect VK might eventually rise, I think the Spurs gig might at the moment prove detrimental to his progress: Anything short of a major trophy or a Champions a League spot would be seen as failure (just as it has for all the recent incumbents) and that will need to be achieved despite an overwhelming likelihood that the clubs star-striker will be leaving over the summer.

Re: The Sun again
Hardly notable, not many managers did last 2 seasons under Abramovichagreenwood wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 9:50 amTrue, but it was a bit of an exceptional case given his status as a club legend and them being under a transfer embargo at the time. It’s also notable that he didn’t last two seasons.

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
Why did the reporter in the press conference keep pushing VK with the same question? Bit annoying to say the least.

Managers have to take opportunities when their stock is high. The Spurs job is one of the biggest in European football and given the right assurances I personally believe he'd take it.

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
There is simply too much that we don't know to make any sort of serious guess as to what VK would do if an offer came from Spurs.
He may well think that a few more years progressing Burnley is the smart way for him to prepare for an eventual move to a big club. But relegating Burnley would not help his progress.
VK is clearly an intelligent and ambitious man. He will know what is required to do well with Burnley in the Premier League and advance his career further.
But we don't know how the discussion over the summer transfer investment have gone/are going with Alan Pace.

Up and coming managers in the championship really don’t succeed at clubs if they are poached away, and the longevity of their tenure is also generally short.

Re: The Sun again - Kompany & Spurs
The Spurs job is probably one of the biggest and more stable jobs on offer in football at this moment in time.
It would be a brilliant move for Kompany.
However, the longevity of the job does lie, to a certain extent, in the hands of the fans.
If any manager hits the ground running he can pull fans onside, it's when the going gets tough trying to keep the fans onside.
I haven't looked, but does anyone know what the feeling would be down there ?

I find reading threads like this one depressing. We have jut won promotion to the PL with the main reason for it being our manager. Let us just look forward to next season without this endless speculation on VK's future.

People are deluded if they think he will choose to stay at Burnley.
Yes spurs have gone through managers but so did Liverpool before they landed Klopp.
VK will back himself to be the man to sort that club out.

I'm of the view that Spurs will probably go for someone else, but if they did make their move for Kompany it's hard to see how he could turn them down.
It's unsurprising that Kompany is being linked with Spurs in the media, and I guess he's genuinely under their consideration at least.

Can't approach him as he is under contract with us. Mr Pace will need to give permission for VK to talk to Spurs and in that compensation will have been agreed
