For me there isn’t four defenders in the world who could have coped in a flat back four in a suicidal 4114 system, with their own front 4 not coming back over the half way line, with the quality and movement of those 5 Villa players running at them

That system yesterday against Villa’s system was pure suicide
We picked the wrong starting personnel too
Shouldn’t have thrown Del Boy straight in and Benson can’t cope with the physicality of the first half hour of a game.
But to judge any player in that set up is futile.
Emery out thought VK completely with the starting systems
Listen to Matty Cash’s interview after the game.
VK didn’t react until half time
VK got some marks back with the 2nd half formation and change of personnel.
Had we’d started with that line up and formation then I think we’d have had a better chance.

We have to think that many teams will come to ours and play similarly. Villa and City before them were quite happy to allow us unchallenged possession whilst they got their players into position. This slows the game down with our back line having the ball but not seeing any easy progressive passes to play. They wait for a mistake, or poor pass and then counter with fast accurate play. In both games the second goals were almost perfect examples of that. When I see our centre backs at the edge of our opponents area I start to get nervous.
