Re: Urban Legends
Haven’t googled it, but I’d imagine it’s a radio thing if it is true. And if it is, and it’s true, then it isnt an urban myth/legend.beeholeclaret wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 10:54 pmGreat and amusing myth but not as good as …….
“Bob Holness was the second person to play James Bond!”
This is actually true though! If in doubt - google it!

Re: Urban Legends
Any particular reasons we are filling the thread up with “true stories” ?
Urban myths and legends. Things we have been told are true but aren’t…. Not stuff we have been told is true, and is.

Heard one recently about a bloke that insured some cigars he valued at £10k each. Subsequently claimed that there had been several small fires and made a succesful insurance claim. The same bloke was then prosecuted for several counts of arson and made to spend time in prison.
True or not, it's a good one.

Bloke that applied for for a Barclaycard. Sent contracts back with some amendments and his signature and Barclays sent him a card. He disn't pay his balance, started fining them for sending letters and reminders, charging them for allsorts of trivial things.
Court judged that Barclays should have read the terms they agreed to. Whilst he had to pay the money he had borrowed back Barclays usual interest/charges etc didn't apply.

Re: Urban Legends
I remember being told about a bloke who had been cleaning a motorbike engine in his back yard with petrol. His wife had got fed up of the bucket of petrol in the yard and had thrown it down the outside toilet. When he came home from work he went to the toilet, sat down and threw his fag end between his legs, blowing himself off the toilet.
When the ambulance arrived, they had him on the stretcher down the back street and when the chap was explaining what had happened to him one of the ambulance crew laughed so much he slipped and broke his ankle. He then also needed to be stretchered away.
It all seemed very plausible when the story was told to me.

I did something similar with the "britannia music club" - and after the first time that they tried something on with their "album of the week" con and found that I had sent back an amended form andwas not contracted to buy it, they made no complaint about what I had done and never tried it again.what_no_pies wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 1:13 amBloke that applied for for a Barclaycard. I've often thought about sending sky, barclaycard (and others) something telling them that if they continue sending me their junk mail then I will charge them a reasonable disposal cost for each item of £1, and that their sending me more of their rubbish it will be treated as an acceptance of my terms.

Swindon?Rick_Muller wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2023 7:26 pmNot an urban legend, the reference to XTC reminded me that I found Andy Partidge’s maths exercise book when sorting through my late father’s belongings a couple of years ago. My dad taught him at school, along with Paul Rideout (not the same year I don’t think) which is a link to Everton who we play tomorrow.

Orange Man - usually found in hedonistic places like San Francisco, Ibiza or a festival.
Man took too much acid, now thinks he is a glass of orange juice. Lives his life upright in fear of the orange spilling.

Don’t think that’s urban myth per se, I’ve heard in a couple of rock n roll biogs about Freddie’s outrageous parties with dwarves serving both champagne and small trays of coke .claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 10:36 amFreddy Mercury had mountains of cocaine carried about on trays strapped to the heads of dwarves at parties.

Re: Urban Legends
It probs is ,not unlike the hamster up the arse stories from Neil Tennant , Holly Johnson et al . Though Almond being the first to hit real fame and he does mention it in his book it’s more likely from his erm direction ! I’m trying not to think too hard about the others ..

noting that the average man ejaculates less than 5 ml of semen in one go i wonder how many ejaculates it would take to provoke a stomach pump.
it is practically impossible.

Re: Urban Legends
One I remember from my youth concerned the Beatles Abbey Road album cover. It fitted in with a rumour that Paul Mc Cartney had died, and been replaced by a lookalike. On the cover photo, Paul was barefoot - like a corpse, John was in white - like Jesus. Ring was in a black suit - an undertaker. George was wearing jeans - a gravedigger.
Bonkers I know- but it had some credence.

apparently you can hear traffic at abbey road on the record because the studio was so flimsy.Middle-agedClaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 16, 2023 9:38 pmOne I remember from my youth concerned the Beatles Abbey Road album cover. 1) his dad was in Showaddywaddy. Myth
2) he invented a percussion instrument. True, it’s called a Dube.

Re: Urban Legends
Sorry to go “off topic” but in my experience the 2 Bob Holness tales go hand in hand with each other. I think the term “urban myth / legend” generally includes an element of “could be true” however incredulous it may seem.
Anyway back to topic:
Les Ferdinand allegedly entered into and vandalised the Blue Peter garden.

Re: Urban Legends
Having seen the comments about this year’s “SPOTY” reminded me of another urban myth.
I’d heard , long ago, that the reason why the BBC moved away from a completely open selection process for the nominees to a BBC- chosen shortlist was , variously, a wave of nominations for either Justin Fashanu or England’s leading fisherman.
