Re: Jay
Thought some of his hold up play and laying the ball off was excellent, first half especially but at his age, more of an impact substitute when player fitness allows.
Always gives his all which is great to see.

Whp knows? I just hope so. Huge difference. Overplayed though. He eas out and out knackered!AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 3:08 pmBased on yesterday's performance I'd agree with you; but do you honestly think Jay-Rod can recover sufficiently by Tuesday to repeat that performance?

Re: Jay
Good observation. I think he still has more left in the tank than folk think.

Absolutely this. If you have watched Ashley's leaving documentary he explained just how that turning moment affected him both in the game and in his personal life. It would be great if the same happens with Jay and the young players listen to his guidance as they did with Ash.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 3:08 pmShane people have to think of starting such threads because they’ve not offered a player the support he needs and deserved.
Interestingly the 16th game two seasons ago was the one at Sunderland and Ashley Barnes.
Re: Jay
He's had criticism this season that, in the main, have been unmerited IMO. I've seen nothing to suggest he's not the best striker on our books still - yes, age is catching up with him, but he has a football brain, sadly lacking in our other striking options, again IMO. He needs wrapping in cotton wool between games - at least until the January transfer window!

Re: Jay
Good again today and that's the exact type of goal we've been missing. Get in the right positions and you'll get goals even on quiet days. That is exactly what Foster doesn't do, he would have been anywhere but the 6 yard box for the tap in.
I think it was Allardyce who called it the 'position of maximum opportunity'.

Re: Jay
The term was coined long before Big Sam. FA Director of Coaching (and Clitheroe born) Charles Hughes came up with POMO as a forerunner to long ball tactics after a lot of statistical analysis. Hughes only passed away earlier this year at the age of 91.Goliath wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 8:55 pmGood again today and that's the exact type of goal we've been missing. Re: Jay
3 wins in the 3 games started. Pays to have some real nous and ability up front. Like Barnes 2 seasons ago. Well done Jay!
Re: Jay
I seem to remember that Graham Taylor made a big play at Watford doing exactly that and Sean Dyche also operates, where possible, with balls in the box at the earliest opportunity.
Makes for exciting football, when balls bouncing around a d just needing the right touch.
Jay playing centre forward, at last creates the opportunity. Under Mr Kompany, they were just another link in the passing chain.

Re: Jay
Another one here holding his hands up. I thought his legs had gone. Last season with how we played I think we could have had Messi up top and still not found him.
Love that he’s proving me and many others wrong and long may it continue

I don't think Everton fans would agree with the exciting football partIanMcL wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 1:25 pmI seem to remember that Graham Taylor made a big play at Watford doing exactly that and Sean Dyche also operates, where possible, with balls in the box at the earliest opportunity.

Ready to hold my hands up, too. Thought Jay was a waste of time, but it's clear that in this system he's exactly what we've been missing and it's no coincidence we've won 3 in a week with him starting. Still need a striker in Jan who can play the role, but in the meantime Jay's proven to be more than capable with his experience, courage and goalscoring expertise.
