I’d only need to convince you if I were stupid enough to want to go into business with you, wouldn’t want to miss out on business because you couldn’t set up your new FTTP service correctly. Luckily though Openreach normally do it for you so your struggles shouldn’t impact you sending lots of emails as long as you sit within range of your ISP’s cheap, nasty router.

I'd try a mesh wifi system Tony, we get perfect signal throughout the house after previously having black spots with virgin's router. Now the router acts as a modem and the mesh system 'nodes' bounce a perfect signal all over.

I can recommend the TP-Link deco systems.

Back on topic, but this is a good suggestion. Plenty of plug and play options in this realm now, that will work perfectly out of the box for your average household.

Best to ask people that live in your immediate area like neighbours who they use and their experiences.

What I have experienced i myself is talk talk are rubbish and Plusnet avoid them if you don't want trouble. Really bad customer service.

Sky have been fine for me for 10+ years as they took over O2 who were very good.

Definitely change your email address to your own domain and your will never be locked out or need to move in future. Any competent IT person can help with seeing that up. You could probably get an up the clarets email address if you own this website domain name, like tony@uptheclarets.com

I've always been with BT ( they own the fibre around here). To me there a much of a muchness between all the suppliers, most of whom are warehousing from BT anyway. As someone said above, the best investment is to not plug in their inhouse routes and repeaters. Cheap as chips and poor in general. I noticed a huge difference in network reliability and performance (at the screen where it counts and not at the incoming fibre switch) when I switched out for a decent Draytek router and put Draytek PoE repeaters all over the house. Solid, no dropouts etc. Would also invest in a network monitoring solution like FING. You can get it for free but if you want bells and whistles you pay a small premium. Getting around 600mbs downstream and around 120 uposteam at the screen so happy. Don't understand the negative comment about Gmail. I use it everywhere on everything and as long as you follow the usual security protocols it's rock solid, unlike the overly complicated competitor from the dark side.

I used to be an advocate for gmail but not since i found out they sell and scan all your personal data in your email and sell that on for profit.

They also locked me out of a very important account for at least a month while they did "checks" to see if it was mine.

Yes, because his issue is one that won’t be fixed unless he has a better home network. He’ll still have poor CS experiences unless he has better equipment. ISPs only care about what you can get from a wired connection because that’s all they’re contracted to provide.

What a read, from such a simple question!

I am a BT man in the south. They pay my pension, so loyal. They look after any issue, without fuss.

However, in Stirling, I live in a barn with thick stone walls, off the main road. No telephone lines come down the road.

Here I use Three mobile network for my broadband. It is a decent speed not like my BT fibre but I pay for that! 40-80mbps. Depending on what's in use. Plenty for all uses.

Got my mobile sim and broadband band added on a 2 year contract. £10 each at the time, for 6 months, then the broadband went to £20. Currently about £23 with inflation. Unlimited streaming etc.

Fretters mentioned the Mesh units. I brought a 3 box system based on his recommendation and it brings great speed to all areas, without blackspots.

Pretty much. Mesh network may also be good for his situation. Hard to say without knowing his house better

Been with them as both business and private customer for more than 20 years.
Hugely reliable and really good customer service.
After they resolved an issue for me recently, they even called me back a few days later to check everything was still working well.

I've been using Virgin Media since I first got broadband in 2001 (was initially NTL) but I've decided it's time to change. Can anyone offer any recommendations as the best options?

Do you have any internal brick walls Tony? A lot of problems with wifi drop outs come from those. If the router is in a room separated by one thats where a lot of issues start. Youve got some good solutions to work through here anyhow. It may be that you run a wired connection to a repeater in the room your having issues with as a work around if the speed is what you want on your current package.

I've had the same guy come to my door 8 times since October. They are persistent ill give them that
