I’m not overly keen on dropping a guy that averages 74.7 in Test cricket.

Agreed-my initial comment was aimed at Bell and Crawley
Re: Ashes Second Test
Sometimes you have to admit they are at times better at playing the game with better cricketers.

It’s time the wide rule in test cricket was reviewed

That’s it. Really good effort today to get as close as we did and for so long a good watch.

Close margins these two tests. Luckily a v quick turnaround for Headingley. Refresh the bowling attack and it’s on.

I would be getting Hain in that starting elevenCoolClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 3:46 pmIt’s tough - just think that with Jimmy seemingly dropping off a cliff we may as well have someone that will average around 25-30 with the bat…
I’d probably bring Moeen back in and either Sam Curran or Woakes for Anderson.
I like Curran because he’s a left armer and has a different style - brings some variation to our attack
You could argue Wood back in but who for or even Potts? Tongue actually bowled quite well…
Crawley
Duckett
Brook
Pope
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Curran/Woakes
Broad/Robbo/Potts
Tongue
Good batting to 9 there
Not sure what else could be done

Must be amazing to know what if. Bit spooky reallyClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 3:38 pmWe wouldn’t. Had we not declared we would have run out of time so would have drawn it at best. We lost it because their 9th wicket pair scored 54 to win it.

I personally don’t think it’s as simple as that. Anything could have happened, if we didn’t declare and added another 100 runs the pressure would be on the Aussies and they could have collapsedClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 4:20 pmNothing amazing at all, just look how long was left when they won it. I assumed that he mean't that the crowd were far more animated and vocal than in the past, which can only be a good thing. The atmosphere has generally been quite cool and passive at Lords compared to the northern grounds, but it was hostile today. This can only be a good thing for English cricket.

Re: Ashes Second Test
Wood has to come in for Jimmy, change in tactics and let's just stop playing silly shots and giving wickets away far too cheaply, too many times we're left at the end expecting the bowlers to pull it out of bag, openers have to step up for me and just be consistent in building an innings, the only other issue is do we play a spinner, if so who. But after today's malarkey we shouldn't need to put any more fire in the bellies.

Re: Ashes Second Test
Is Wood fit? No doubt Jimmy hasn’t had good tests this summer although Edgbaston In particular offered him nothing. I’d have a fit Wood in the side.alwaysaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 4:28 pmWood has to come in for Jimmy, change in tactics and let's just stop playing silly shots and giving wickets away far too cheaply, too many times we're left at the end expecting the bowlers to pull it out of bag, openers have to step up for me and just be consistent in building an innings, the only other issue is do we play a spinner, if so who. Re: Ashes Second Test
Not sure about wood's fitness but if he is he definitely comes in for me, one of the thing's they were far better at this test was pace, another was the field placings at times and the work they put in to stop the boundaries, it really is fine margins though tbf, but the one obvious thing we need to step up with is opening of batting and 3 and 4 we need to be far more consistent cos the aussies are.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 4:30 pmIs Wood fit? Its not though is it - I don’t think you’ve fully grasped what I’m getting at.
The two are extremely intertwined - elitism influences stereotyping & racist institutions.
But again, don’t want to derail the thread

Re: Ashes Second Test
I'm still smarting at Robinson's wicket.....he was our last decent batsman & he just chucked it away!
Those things are the reason we're 2 down.....Brainfart decisions.
Regarding Strauss, he saw nothing unsporting about Bairstow's dismissal...Twohat.

If cricket isn't elitist then why is it only a case of who you know to get membership of the MCC.
