Re: Transfer Rumours Thread - NO FINANCIAL DISCUSSION
Seems to me that transfer fees are rarely just as simply as "£ X". It's not like buying a house.
If different numbers are being pushed in different places, that is probably because they're using different points of reference - the base fee that is guaranteed, the total maximum fee taking in all potential add-ons, something in between that reflects performance triggers that either relate to individual performance (goals/appearances) vs team performance (promotion etc, - less directly influenced by the player).
It would be no surprise to learn that our approach this year has been to do deals based on lower committed fees and lots of conditional add-ons. That would help explain Kompany's comment that we've actually spent a lot less than the reported numbers. It might also be why the Metz asking price is being quoted as 4.2m, 7m and 10m. It might well be that we'd be willing to pay a headline fee of £4.2m, but want less to be guaranteed.
No question that as the summer wears on, the reality of our financial position and the reality of life under ALK and the debt appears to becoming into sharper focus. There's a week to go so no need to be too alarmed yet, but the rhetoric and the ambition is not matching reality yet. Whether that's because we got less money through the door for our sales and Kompany hasn't entirely adjusted his targets accordingly yet, remains to be seen.

Why do you think this? I'd have thought that the intention was that the majority would be kept. They will have had a season playing as required and, if we do get promoted, were obviously successful at it.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 8:32 amI think we have to factor in that IF we get promoted a fair number of the current players may not be required in the PL and will be surplus to retirements. If we've paid big fees and they're on really high wages, there may be a problem moving them on to make space for the necessary upgrades in quality.
There will obviously be a few that would be surplus to requirements but that's the same for any promoted team. I'd imagine that the main transfer activity would be replacing the loanees and a few like Cork and Rodriguez who are getting to the end of the career. I can't see us doing a second rebuild.

Absolutely this.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 11:10 amArise Sir Charge is right
We all know by now that we have a big debt to pay off, and that will affect our transfer policy
We've raised a lot, spent a small amount of that, and have a small amount left over to fill two or three positions
If Metz want more than we can afford, then we have to move on, and its pointless going back to the sale and all the stuff associated with that because we all agree that it was sub optimal for Burnley football club (though the complete lack of alternatives made it the only way we could go)
It’s time we moved on. What’s done is done. I wanted Garlick out because I felt he was no longer putting the required money in and had fallen out with Dyche. I didn’t however want what we got with Pace - debt. However it’s nearly 2 years ago now. We have what we have and we need to survive and wheel and deal within our new parameters.
Risking money on an unknown that stretches us is a risk they may feel is not worth taking. So move on to another target be it a purchase or a loan.

Re: Transfer Rumours Thread - NO FINANCIAL DISCUSSION
The reality is that only Cullen of the current crop of purchases looks like a consistent performer at this level on current form. Maatsen and THB are on loan and Of the other key players Jay Rod and Cork are 33.
Of those who are on the optimistic scale RV himself has said from the off that a pacy striker is required and more recently we need 2 more quality signings: he’s not wrong.
A year in mid table is neither use nor ornament because at the end of this year we are likely to lose 2 of the better players and 2 have key players into their mid 30s. And we lose another £30 million in PL broadcast revenue.
It’s not a time for making excuses or justifying Garlick or ALK. The investment is required now and we should have the funds to pay 4 million for a striker.

The journalist in question actually said “more than double”, which would mean it’s not €5m, if we offered €2.5m.forzagranata wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 10:53 amThere is always lots we don't know about transfer deals - that is a given.
But the info that we know is out there is - a credible journalist reported we had offered 2.5 million euros but that Metz want double that.
Our manager said last night: "It is a difficult one, there are some players that are out of our range financially.
“For us it is a player who is probably out of our range.”
It doesn't seem unreasonable for people to suggest therefore that we aren't willing to pay the 5 million euros for this particular player.
If we’re going to use journalist quotes to bash the board, let’s at least use them accurately.

Utterly bizarre! Clearly a prospect (regular for Belgium U-21's and a lot of games for his age), but where are they all going to play? Churlinov, Benson, JBG, Zaroury, Tella etc - perhaps it's a case of three of those behind one striker but none of them are number ten's by trade in the same way that O'Hare was. One can only assume that Kompany believes they are capable of playing in that role.
I am starting to think Kompany wants the option to make all 5 subs in games as a sort of 'one up' on most of this league with no discernible loss in the quality on the pitch in the same way Klopp and Pep do in the PL perhaps?
Re: Transfer Rumours Thread - NO FINANCIAL DISCUSSION
So far this season he has played only as a centre forward and attacking midfielder according to transfermarkt.
2 goals in 5 appearances.

We are certainly sowing our seeds to harvest in 2-3 years time, aren't we?
Success will be measured two ways.
A return to the Premier League and/or a huge return on our relatively modest incomings.
This is the model Pace wanted, this appears a good strategy, but time will tell.

But, come on, its not about 'bashing the board'. Do we have to go into the usual social media binary of Leavers v Remainers, Republican v Democrat, Woke v Gammon and go into 'Pacebots v Board Bashers'?
Is it really not possible to have a rational, critical view of events without being a 'basher'?

We aren't willing to pay more than double 2.5 million euros.
So we aren't willing to pay somewhere in the region of 4.5 to 6 million pounds for this striker that presumably VK had identified.
Its useful to know and I am glad that VK is so transparent.

Re: Transfer Rumours Thread - NO FINANCIAL DISCUSSION
I know nothing whatsoever about this lad, except to say that he's been a reasonable regular for Charleroi, who finished a fairly creditable 7th last season - can't be said that the kid had a spectacular goalscoring record but there's lots of possible reasons for that.
What I would say is that the theme that runs through virtually every striker we've been linked with is that they are not target men. They are generally strikers who would play off a target man in the sort of system we've been used to at Burnley. It does look very much as though Barnes and Jay will be our principle "target men" options once the window has closed, and whilst finances are clearly an issue generally, that much appears to be Kompany's choice. One observation I'd certainly make is that at times in the games I've seen it's been abundantly obvious that we'd benefit more from having someone running the channels and behind to give us an outball, than from having a big fella to knock it into - and at times Rodriguez (and perhaps even more so Barnes) would benefit from having someone running off them to create space and provide options.
Is this a good thing or bad? Time will tell. One thing I think it does need is reinforce the need for more height at the back because otherwise we will be a very small, and bullyable, team, particularly at set plays.

Its also possible that VK might not want to use a target man and rather have a number 10 style striker up top who can receive the ball and help bring the other attacking midfielders into goal scoring positions hence VKs comment about sharing the goals out.

I think he'd be extremely poor in the new system. We are after a striker to link the play and bring the midfielders forward. That's not Wood.Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 2:02 pmHe would score 20+ here no matter what he said when he left
If it's target man your after both Rodriguez and Barnes are better equipped to play that way.
Without us crossing any balls into the box or punting them forwards Wood would be an absolute passenger.
Personally I believe one of the reasons Wood was successful for us was that we shaped the team around him, I also believe it stifled the goals elsewhere.
