Your Team for Sunderland

Post by Claretmatt4 » Tue Jan 17, 2017 7:25 am

Apologies if it's a dupe.

I'd like us to switch up styles and players tonight as the result isn't hugely important.

Pope
Tarkowski
Mee
Keane
Darikwa - I'll get slated but if he needs match fitness
Lowton
O'Neill
Hendrick
Barton
Agyei
Vokes

Back 3 with Tarks given the license to roam when we are in advanced attacking positions. Wingers to bomb on with a combination of Barton and a shift of the back 3 to cover all bases, central midfield that includes grit, guile and passing ability and little and large up top, keen to see what Agyei can offer.

Would hope Ginnelly gets a half too.

Who would you pick?

The result is important mentally - we can't afford to lose at home and compromise the fortress turf moor mentality!

My team would be

Pope
Darikwa Tarky Mee Flanagan
Boyd Marney Barton Hendrick Kightly
Vokes

Gives a few players a rest whilst maintaining a strong side

Pope
Darikwa Tarkowski Mee Flanagan
Kightly Hendrick Barton Defour Barnes
Vokes

With the draw for the next round looking very winnable, and the squad showing no signs of slowing in the league, I would put a fairly strong team out with a smattering of players lacking regular football.

We could have a decent run in the Cup ahead.

I think you are all miles out.

Just rest Marney and give Tarks a start instad of Keane.

If we are to persist with the daft idea of Defour out wide - might as well let him get used to it.

People keep mentioning Ginnelly to play in the cup. He's cup tied.

I think he'll soon be worldclass until people see him play for the first time.

Ginnelly is cup tied - played in 1st round
Agyei was an unused sub in the 2nd round for Coventry - don't know if that means he is cup tied or not......anyone?

Agyei is not cup tied. I would like to see him on the bench tonight, but it depends if the club want to send him out on loan. He can't play for three teams in one season.

I'd prefer he went and got some more football, this time at Championship level.

Agyei would be confined to the Dev squad for the rest of the season if we play him tonight. Much better if we can negotiate him another loan

I'd start our strongest team and bring on the younger lads/squad players in the 2nd half if we're in a good position. We're a very fit team - the players can manage playing today and this weekend.

Based upon the changes made for the first game, I'd go for:
Pope
Darikwa Tarkowski Mee Flanagan
Hendrick Defour Barton Boyd
Vokes Gray

Why not on the bench if he's good enough, otherwise we have to bring in another striker. With Ginnelly cup-tied I'd give O'Neill a game.
Actually Think SD will play a strong side in the belief that a cup run could both act as a positive during any difficult period and that it would give more fringe players game time, so in reality don't expect too many changes from The weekend, expect Tarka and Flanagan will probably get on to start.

Pope,
Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Ward
Boyd, Barton, Hendrick, Kightly
Vokes, Gray

I would have given Boyd a rest but there aren't many options left, considering several are a bit injured.

You lack imagination Boatshed, so probably the team SD will select.

I'd rest key players tbh - Sunderland may well look to inflict injuries on our players as a ploy to weaken our Premier League position and drag us back down there.

Although we could be possible outsiders to get to Wembley or even win it imo, also it is imo the perfect time to give ginnelly and agyei a start tonight and say come on lads give it your best shot and let's see how close you are, there are premier league clubs looking at ginnelly which must mean he's somewhere near cos they will already have had him watched at Walsall, and the same possibly with agyei maybe he just needs an opportunity.

Pope,
Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Ward
Boyd, Barton, Defour, Kightly
Vokes, Gray

Keep playing Defour and raise that fitness level. He did 90 minutes at Sunderland and another 70+ at the weekend. No reason he can't do another 70+ tonight. You don't improve your stamina by sitting games out!

If "lacking imagination" means not using players who have failed to hold down first team places at Coventry and Walsall you are right, ABC

I think his point is you're using players in their preferred position instead of moving them about

I think we would have to use Gray up front just for his pace, their backs were useless against him last time.

I thought his choices for Sunderland were very canny.
..................Pope
Darikwa...Keane...Tarks....Ward
JBG....Barton....Defour...Arfield
.......Vokes.....Gray
He brought in 4 players but no one was next to another player who hasn't played regularly. Even Defour who had the benefit of playing next to Joey :D

If you compare it with the League Cup line up:
..................Pope
Darikwa...Long...Tarks....Flanno
JBG....Ulvestad....O'Neill...Kightly
.......Vokes.....Jukes
I'm not even sure that those guys had played together in behind closed doors games, they certainly didn't play like a team that knew each other.

For tonight maybe we'll see something like :
..................Pope
Darikwa...Keane.....Tarks...Ward
Kightly....Barton....O'Neill...Defour
.......Vokes.....Gray

Best with fever tree, ice, and a bit of cucumber in my opinion.

No problem with Pope, Darikwa and Tarkowski coming in but want to see a strong midfield with Barnes and Gray up front.
