Bloody NYT reporting facts. Didn't we have any riots? Aren't we one of the most deprived areas? We always seem to be in the top 10 poorest lists.

new york should concentrate on sorting itself out first,
graffiti covered dump that it is. Once you move away from the touristy bits, its a sewer.
Burnley on the other hand is rich in history by comparison. It should be us who attract the tourists, not new york.
Until relatively recently, new york was a swamp with a footpath .

Re: Another august organ lays into Burnley
IF you actually read the article - it is being used as a comparator with America on approaches to policing in deprived and multi-ethnic areas and efforts to develop a more gender and ethnic diversity in the police force - yes it is guilty of highlighting the negatives - even the photo from the top of Brunshaw Rd is cropped to perfection - all you see is rows of terraces and old mill buildings. It also mentions Tottenham. In both cases these places are known to American's because of Premier League football (we feature live over there a lot for some reason).
The story is reasonably positive in that it features locals who have chosen to work in communities they come from to make things better (though the British Humour does not translate) - also the level of care from the Burnley officer to an ex forces lad is used pointedly as a comparison to the approach used in similar types of areas in the US (genuine care and comfort as opposed to shoot them dead)
It is definitely being used as an axe to grind against the US rather than have a go at Burnley or the UK

well you might like the bright lights and horrendous musicals with their garish advertising boards illuminating the cess pit around times square, but once you move away from the tacky starbucks on every corner, litter covered streets, there's not much to bother with.evensteadiereddie wrote:Er, no.

Unbelievable, Jeff.
Re: Another august organ lays into Burnley
Never mind the article and the photos, I just dig that NY Times map of the UK:
'Hey we're going over to England, the capital's called Burnley! We might visit that small town of London, maybe afterward.''
That has to be the best map of the UK I've ever seen and it's got NY Times approval for it underneath. Absolute first class!

You can find facts to support whatever you want, wasn't Burnley the most enterprising town a few years back? plenty of high end tech outfits like AMS Neve and the Aerospace firms?

The best bits of New York will be superior to what Burnley offers but the ghettos etc are far worse than anything Britain never mind Burnley can come up with.
Are the shootings overthere not newsworthy anymore? So they have to write about our Town?

Hang on a minute; one of the most-peddled myths is that America is an insular, inward-looking society that couldn't point out Russia on a map of the world. So when we see evidence that the American media is looking outwards and perhaps even championing our gunless police force we criticise it.Quickenthetempo wrote:Are the shootings overthere not newsworthy anymore? I thought the NY Times article was incredibly positive. We did have riots in 2001. The town did once thrive on the back of the cotton industry. The only negative comment is a quote from one of the police officers but even that was tongue-in-cheek.

With poster 15. Reasonably positive. Suggests we have a better approach to policing in our town - when its appropriate.

Coyote, you're being incredibly defensive in a myopic way. You seriously can't compare the depth of history of Burnley with that of New York. Don't mistake longevity for depth. If any of us were to bother to do a comparison list to your call-outs above, it would fall of the bottom of the allowed characters per post. But I will offer up one correction. NYC has been populated much longer than the Burnley area, and incorporated at a similar time, but in the last 300 years or so there is no comparison to be made whatsoever, the existance of NYC as the immigration entry point makes Burnley's own history pale by comparisonWile E Coyote wrote:well you might like the bright lights and horrendous musicals with their garish advertising boards illuminating the cess pit around times square, but once you move away from the tacky starbucks on every corner, litter covered streets, there's not much to bother with.

Re: Another august organ lays into Burnley
you must be kidding ! Once you get away from the tourist stuff, you are left with urban decay. Its big because it needs to house their 8 million somewhere.Usually in the run down areas like brooklyn or the bronx.NRC wrote:Coyote, you're being incredibly defensive in a myopic way. so millions flood in every year and for what? irish bars? dome a favour. You'll get someone who's been before telling someone to visit o' donachies burger bar or something, its meaningless. Statue of liberty, a quite small green statue on a plinth in the river.
Its not a cultural centre.
Burnley at least is a real town, its long history is genuine. settlers from Rome, Celts, Saxons. its been farmed, mined, and has been at the very hub of the industrial revolution. If it weren'tfor Burnley, there would be no New York in the commercial sense.
Our trade enabled the wealth in the Americas to mount up over generations.
Burnley is underestimated historically.

Trump is a bigger racist than Burnley ever was or ever will be. This is actually a good story. Differentiates between the approach taken in Britain and taken in North America. People over here still can't believe that police in Britain aren't armed.

And I agree with Wily. Burnley=real people who bleed claret & blue. New York= vastly overrated, whose real culture is what you saw in "Saturday Night Fever". Need I say more?
