Are we a bigger Club now than past decades.
This is the only period of time I can remember We don't have to sell our best players.

There's no doubt that not having to sell on one or two top players every season will make a difference.Grimsby Claret wrote:Are we a bigger Club now than past decades.

We could have been "top 4" if we didn't have to sell Ralph Coates, Martin Dobson, Dave Thomas - who were all England players.

In terms of potentially winning trophies...no
(You are asking two different questions there I would say...)
In terms of money/ debt/ facilities...a definite yes
In terms of crowds..probably not
In terms of world-wide profile...definite yes
In terms of ability to attract players...a difficult one..varies

Re: Are Burnley a bigger Club now than the Seventies?
The only reason we are financially viable at the moment is firstly because of the massive Sky support for football - this simply did not exist in the 1970s - and top management by the BFC board. It is the latter that means we don't have to sell our best players for financial reasons, but our best players will still depart for 'bigger' clubs because we can't afford to pay them as much as they do.
After the removal of the maximum wage in the early sixties all Burnley could do was sell to survive. Once that happened, and there was more competition for developing young players, the outcome was inevitable although the clubs decline went beyond what it should have done because of poor management.
In terms of support I would say we are not 'a bigger club'.

Excellent Explanation of how you see it posters.
Crowds are debatable. 20,000 average gates now. With average away support about 1500.
I can remember Gates as low as 14,000 in the late Sixties and mid seventies.
But also With Mass away support from Clubs Like Utd,City, Liverpool, Everton, and Leeds 30,000-40,000.
