Barton as captain?
Would you think that having Joey as an outfield captain would give us anything extra that Heaton doesn't?

Re: Barton as captain?
we won the championship and sit mid table in the PL with Tom as captain, must be doing something right !
If it's good enough for Buffon it's good enough for Heaton

Would give us a captain who won't be able to play for the rest of the seasonA.Claret.Fan wrote:Would you think that having Joey as an outfield captain would give us anything extra that Heaton doesn't?

Why would it make a difference? It's just one person wearing a piece of fabric instead of another.

If you've heard Tom during a game then you'll know he can be quite vocal, for those players further up the pitch there's Joey. Though there's more to being captain than simply geeing up the lads on the pitch.

Re: Barton as captain?
He already becomes a captain in every game he plays. More importantly the manager and the rest of the team regard him as the leader of the group.

We have good leadership on the pitch and from the skipper.

He is the outfield captain.
At one point today I saw Barton telling Boyd to tuck in to the midfield.

He was Manager at one point today too, ran over to Dyche to tell him to get Westwood on for Arfield
Re: Barton as captain?
Might be my age but didn't there used to be a club captain and a team captain which were occasionally different players.
Tom ... club captain
JB ... Team captain until banned

I think Joey plays that role anyway, without the armband. Giving it to him officially would probably unsettle both him and the team.

Joey has 3-4 games left then will never play for us again...Why on earth would we make him captain. He also demonstrated no loyalty last summer... On the pitch leader that's about it

Thats a bold statement, I hope he gets a minimal ban.Claretto wrote:Joey has 3-4 games left then will never play for us again...Why on earth would we make him captain. He also demonstrated no loyalty last summer... On the pitch leader that's about it
However dont be surprised if he gets another year if his ban is not too long.
He has been superb for us.

Re: Barton as captain?
Not sure where loyalty comes into it. Barton was out of contract and joined Rangers for reasons unknown but I suspect he sensed he wouldn't be first pick for us.
As it turns out, on returning he has been MOM or close in virtually every game and (in my view) has led to us being far better away. He has been impeccable since joining us first time and in my view, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Re: Barton as captain?
Yeah, let's take the captaincy off our player of the season. That would be great for morale.

He doesn't need the armband to take responsibility and fire up the team.

Re: Barton as captain?
Joey does not need to be named captain to give instruction/ advice to the team or the manager.
