O/T People that arrive at work...

Post by Diesel » Wed Feb 08, 2017 6:55 pm

...dead on time or even late, with a take out (Costa) coffee in their hand, groaning 'I can't function until I've had my fix'

Should be pistol whipped.

And when its mentioned, they come out with "but it's only five minutes!"

Well. If it's "only five minutes", why are you never five minutes early?

I tell my lot, if ya wanna chat and a brew before you start work, get here earlier.

I hate other humans.

Slightly off topic but I've never understood the massive caffeine/coffee addiction that office workers seem to have, possibly due to growing up with parents that would only buy decaffeinated products. Is it really that pronounced that people 'can't function without it'? I've been addicted to nicotine in the past, would any enlightened people say it's comparable?

I generally get to work early, at the min I start about an hour earlier.
Gives me an hour to myself to listen to the radio, eat my breakfast and get started with the sales orders with out any interruptions, like the phone ringing etc

When I started working at a place in Burnley I used to turn up dead on the start time, but the boss had a nice word in my shell and asked me to get there a little earlier, about 10 mins if poss, because the machines were switched on at the start time and I needed to be ready then.
From then on I was always early to work.

We tried an experiment when we were at school and stopped the teachers drinking tea or coffee for a few days.
Wow they were miserable without it.

I suppose its like anything else, you become accustomed to having it and the supposed little boost you get from it.

Coffee doesn't actually wake you up, it just prolongues the effects of not feeling tired.

An apple in the morning will make you feel just as good, if not better, than a coffee.

All i drink is coffee, but as it's my normal drink it doesn't have the kick effect that occasional drinkers get. I do however get a bad headache if I have not had a brew for a couple of hours. Unless thats just shopping and walking around that causes it.
Apples make you hungry, not something to have to stave off hunger pangs.

Being pistol whipped, if done properly, certainly won't wake you up but it will make you think about where you're going wrong.

Odd that you have that effect from a "withdrawal" as I very very rarely drink tea/coffee and get a headache or a weird feeling in my head whenever I do drink it

What about all the phookers that skive off for a smoke leaving the non smokers to hold the fort?

When I was at Euro car parts there was a deal in my branch about smokers who wanted extra fag breaks.
They had a shorter lunch break to compensate.

Costa/Starbucks is just the next fasionable thing people like to be seen doing.

Look at me, look at me, I pay £3 for a coffee in a cardboard cup....
Aren't I posh... no your lazy and/or stupid.

Nandos
Prosecco
Costa

People find ways to waste money on simple things you can do or make yourself.

If you think that instant coffee is as good as freshly ground beans and that people eat Nandos to look posh then you have seriously poor judgement.

Coffee actually has the opposite affect with me and occasionally makes me feel edgey. Never wakes me up or gives me energy though. Most people think it does because they are told it does. Its ********.

Believe me it's better to let me go for a couple of fag breaks than working with with no nicotine. The coffee chuggers would be the first to get banjoed. However, it is a fair point about all the accumulated time missed

Saying "I can't function without my first coffee" is just a fashionable, instinctive blurt-out that these people have heard on TV and then say to try and sound edgy, trendy and oh so 'on their game'. Total and utter guff.
And they always buy that overpriced American garbage from organisations that are serial tax dodgers too.

I get into work on the dot and leave on the dot. If I have a smoke break I'll take it off my lunch.

I'll work whilst I'm getting paid. Why should my employer get an extra 10 minutes for free from me every morning?

The one that winds me up is when a someone on maternity leave brings their child in and the women all down tools for half an hour or so to coo over the baby.

There is a masssove difference. But the price is ridiculous. A coffee in starbucks costs just shy of the cost of the full bag of beans which makes tons of cups.

Probably one of the biggest profit making products there is.

Relentless for me. Tastes just like red bull but you get more of it. It's rare that I drink the stuff, and because I like the taste.

Tea and tea only for me (along with about 7-8 pints of water). The smell of fresh coffee is far greater than it's taste.

Freshly ground coffee is nearly always better than instant, unless it's from Starbucks. I've only ever been to Starbucks 3 times in my whole life, and every time I was served utter garbage at a high price. I was either unlucky 3 times, or Starbucks really do just sell expensive garbage.

Usual guff about being able to give up when they want too, but they don't so why should they etc.
The fact they're socially dependant on it, or smoke it as soon as they get down stairs in the morning is irrelevant.
The paranoia is usually the best part about it.

Knew an alcoholic builder once. He'd get through 24 cans of carling in a day starting at breakfast. Most productive bugger I've seen. Strange what the body gets used to

Me too, that 10mins away from my desk and a fresh air break (!) meant I was much more productive.

Also helpful that my boss smoked as well!

I remember this coming out in the press and its actually a bit misleading. There is as much energy in an apple as there is in a coffee with milk and sugar etc, but caffeine lowers your minds perception of effort, something that an apple does not do. That's why people have a coffee in the morning and not an apple, also why they put caffeine in energy drinks and sports supplements.

Not as smelly as the bastards who claim to be non smokers yet drive around in cars with their exhaust pointing towards the kerb at pram height, pumping out toxic fumes that everyone else has no choice but to breath. Polluting the atmosphere for pedestrians and cyclists. Even worse are those smelly bastards who do the so called school run, pulling up outside schools spewing all sorts of carcinogenics from their cars where there are young mothers with babies in prams and small children. I don't see smokers on a break forcing their fumes on others.

Too right I am. Reading posts from people having a go at smokers nipping out for a ciggy when they themselves pi55 off to the toilet for 15 minutes to check out Facebook, Twitter, up the clarets or play candy crush.

I started a new job last month and it is very difficult to be late. Requirement is to work 7 hours per day, between 7am and 7pm. Want a longer lunch break, no problem, just make up the hours. Quite handy if you want to use the gym or other facilities on site. I found out today that the building I work in was built on the site of the former National Hockey Stadium in MK, the scene of Judas fleeing north of the border to see Mammy 7 or so years ago......

But the people who smoke also do those things, on top of smoke breaks.

When I worked in an office I always favoured the 4.30 crap break. Left you with ten minutes to turn the computer off and get your coat on.

At every company I've worked at all employees are usually entitled to 10 minutes break in the morning and afternoon as well as the standard lunch break. It just so happens that the smokers use these breaks to smoke and non-smokers do whatever non-smokers do - surely that's the sensible solution?
