Some sad news to report

Post by KRBFC » Mon Feb 13, 2017 12:03 am

I'm posting this here because I know some of you (CT, Royboy, DCWAT, MDWAT) knew my great Grandad Richard ''D I CK'' Wills, a claret fan for over 90 years. Unfortunately he has died peacefully tonight.

What a sickener.

At least he had a good innings and got to see the Clarets back to where he saw them more than others.

Condolences to you and your family and peace be with Richard.

KRBFC - really sorry for your loss.

Absolutely top bloke Richard. Made time to talk to me at every single game he attended. Always had time to ask about me in general and his joke about the stair lift never got old.

The world will be a worse place without him.

Pass on my condolences to all the family.

KRBFC - I'm really sorry to hear this news, it was only yesterday that my Dad and I were talking about Richard and wondering how he was.

Many on here will have known him much better than I did, it was only through sitting next but one to him in the Bob Lord that I knew him, but that was plenty to know what a lovely and humourous man he was. He always had a great story to tell and a smile on his face.

Rest in peace, Richard and my sincere condolences to KRBFC and to Richard's family and friends.

Very best wishes - he'll always be a Claret.

David

A grand age to get to. It seems, if some of the comments on this thread are owt to go by, that he touched many people's lives in a positive way.
Can one ask for more than this?

Keep the happy memories close.

Re: Some sad news to report

Post by ClaretTony » Mon Feb 13, 2017 9:39 am

I am so saddened at Dick's passing. I'd known him for over 40 years since he umpired in local cricket. One day I got a few runs (so that day will be easily traceable) and he saw my name in the scorebook. "Which one is Scholes?" he asked. When I told him it was me he asked if I knew a Frank or Edmund Scholes. They were my uncle and dad and Dick had been brought up with them and was a friend.

I got to know him so well over the years. Eventually I didn't live too far from him and saw him countless times and had chats about football and cricket as well as family. He used to love to tell the story of when he played in goal on the Turf for Burnley Schoolboys against Bolton Schoolboys, how they played well but lost heavily due to a Bolton centre forward by the name of Nathaniel Lofthouse. There's a lovely story to that too, they kept in touch right up to Nat's passing a few years ago.

He used to go out every day after his morning exercises which, he claimed, kept him active. Some days it was just a matter of catching the bus from the Spar on Manchester Road and going into town to put a bet on. But he was an active man who even once appeared on television. He's on Football Hardest Away Days, you can see him leaving Deepdale after the 1-0 defeat. He'd have been 81 then.

Sadly, I haven't seen Dick since I popped round to see him on his 90th birthday. It's two days before mine and he laughed that it made him just two days older than me.

KRBFC - you were privileged to have such a great granddad and I know just how much you and your family are going to miss him.

Rest in peace Dick - I am so pleased I knew you.

We had season tickets in the BL for many years before moving to the JHU several years ago and I'm sure Dick used to sit right in front of us. We often chatted and he'd shout out many humourous things during the game. A lovely chap!
