Remember the match Burnley played against Chelsea in the 60s .

Post by davemanu2000 » Tue Feb 14, 2017 12:47 pm

Burnley were the Champions . They had to fight in the four fronts :
1. European Cup ,
2. League Cup .
3. FA Cup
4, Former premier League (first Division then)

The pundits said that there too many irons in the fire and the players overplayed and should be very tired .

The then Manger fielded 10 players from reserve against Chelsea . Even then Burnley did not lose as the match ended 4-4 .

This was a game that had a mention on here over last weekend, played on the 11th Mar'61. I think only Cummings and Harris from our 'normal eleven' were selected and yet we still drew with Chelsea.

Four days later we played away at Hamburg in the second leg of the European Cup quarter-final, losing 1-4, and then on the 18th played Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final losing 0-3.

We were still in the League Cup at that time but soon went out in the semi-final of that competition also. We ended the season 4th in Division One having played over 60 games in the season overall and no doubt tiredness was a factor in our poor end to the season.

I had forgotten one point to add . FA fined Burnley 1.000 pounds for fielding so many reserve players .

Only Harris, who had only just come into the team for the departed Pilkington. Cummings wasn't in the first team at the time.

Usual team was: Adam Blacklaw, John Angus, Alex Elder, Walter Joyce, Jimmy Adamson, Brian Miller, John Connelly, Jimmy McIlroy, Ray Pointer, Jimmy Robson, Gordon Harris.

Team v Chelsea was: Jim Furnell, David Smith, Billy Marshall, David Walker, Tommy Cummings, Jimmy Scott, Trevor Meredith, Ian Lawson, Andy Lochhead, Ronnie Fenton, Gordon Harris.

We were fined 1,000 guineas for fielding a weakened team and we went on to lose the two big games in the following week.

That's an interesting one CT.

I had in mind that Peter Simpson made his debut in the final game of the following season against Sheff Wed.

I think David Walker may have been our right-half against Chelsea in '60/'61.

My mistake, I should have looked it up but did it off the top of my head. It was indeed David Walker at right half.

Just a month short of my 9th birthday but I recall very clearly where I was stood with my dad. Fully expected us to win because that's what we did in that era. Of course, my favourite non-Claret, Jimmy Greaves, was in their team and on the day did what he did better than anyone............. and not for the last time!

I can remember Jim Furnell playing for Arsenal in the league cup at the turf , it was one of the the best pieces of goalkeeping I've seen, he was unbeatable making save after save ..Always liked him ..

Jim Furnell was a decent goalkeeper but he couldn't get a game at Burnley so moved on to lesser clubs - first Liverpool and then Arsenal.

Was 2 shillings on the ground with half price for boys. Programme was 3d but went up a massive 33% to 4d in the following season.

We couldn't afford seats

It was always very expensive compared to standing

If I recall correctly, Jim Furnell returned to the Turf in goal for Rotherham in a League Cup game, 68/69ish shortly after we'd bought Frank Casper from them.
Think we won 2 - 0.

My first ever clarets match was at Stamford Bridge in 1969. We won 3-2. I was seven and couldn't work out how they could play one way and then the other. I thought what's that about? Surely that's the Burnley net and that's the Chelsea net and now Burnley are trying to score in their own net and Chelsea are trying to stop them and vice versa. I guess I came to cottoning on to football, late, but I've sort of made up for it.
